For Bunita Marcus (John Tilbury)

strgn, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

i only have 'all piano' w/ tilbury on mp3, and i've only listened to 'triadic memories' and 'for bunita marcus' to any extensive degree. i know the reverb decays much more beautifully when the sound isn't mp3, but these recordings are still amazing and really difficult to crack. i'd like to hear more...

bugs me when you can hear the decay filter out into digital netherlands... does milton parker or anyone else know what else is worth hearing, maybe isn't 2 hrs +?

My top three:
Three Voices as performed by Joan LaBarbera (for whom it was written but currently hard to find)
Coptic Light (DG recording)
The Viola In My Life #2 (Harmonia Mundi recording)

For Bunita Marcus might be the most beguiling recording I've ever listened to. The pattern sections are puzzles that I can't solve -- is it the cumulative overtones and decays that swim around the struck figures? what about the notes that hit at different octaves? how do the variations on note order and note scale change tonal and rhythmic emphases? what about those sudden departures in the midst of the patterns? i keep seeing rothko comparisons referenced, but i haven't seen enough or heard enough to have that make any sense.

would reading 'give my regards to eighth street' clear some of this up? i can never find it. i know feldman was a great talker/writer. my fav. quote that i heard hearsay was something like 'if i could find the right chair, i could write better than beethoven.' something like that...

in any case, for bunita marcus is absolutely gorgeous, especially toward the end...

i played some friends the first minute or so of 'triadic memories' and they said it sounded like an episode of x-files = c/d?
