How rubbish is the Collectors Price Guide 2004?

I mean, I was pricing up some vinyl yesterday, and the prices are bollox. £10 for a 12" if Never Gonna Give You Up? £5 for a slade single? Come ON!

Has anyone EVER known the prices to be right in that thing? If not, for the purposes of selling it (record fairs and ebay) what should be my pricing strategy?

Depends what exactly you are using it for. I know a lot of shops that use it to price things one way or another, normally using it to discount the price from. Metal Box on vinyl is about £15 in there, which I thought was pretty fair. Obviously, a lot of it should move with fashion.

They are all pretty much rubbish. Those things are only good for gaging the rarity of LPs or telling if something is an irregular/misprinted record. Otherwise, bleh.

So where DO they get the prices in that book? Surely they don't think "Oh, I like this, it must be wortha few bob to someone" - tell me they use a slightly more scientific method.

something like this has little relevance in a post-ebay world

That's what I figured - but do the prices have a little more relevence if I trawl them along to a Record Faire and sell them there? Are overpriced Rick Astley 12" singles likely to go at a decent price at a record fair instead of in a record shop or on ebay?

no. these days at record fairs people just want bargains bargains bargains.
