New York City and electronica

To start with a general request: I'm looking for experimental electronic music from NYC.

Somewhat more precise: I'm looking for experimental electronica (from NYC or not) that deals in one way or another with the urbanity of NYC, through the use of certain lyrics, certain samples, etc.

Anyways: what is your opinion on the relationship between music and urbanity / urban images / urban way of life? What makes music / sound urban?

Plumbline: Pinpoint. It's about NYC (architechture, maps, locations etc.). It's out on Hydrogen Dukebox.

Actually, I think most of your New York electronics come from hip-hop at this point: there's nary a subway sound that hasn't been used on some record or other.

WE's first album for sure, and the Excursions in Illbient compilation definitely. The latter evokes the sticky black street juice that gets all over your shoes and legs at certain late night dance parties. Lots of claustrophobia, lots of disorientation, lots realer than Joey Beltram.

Who was the Brit who made an NYC-themed album loaded with DAT found sounds and street scenes? David Holmes?

Crooklyn Dub Consortium probably counts, eh?

That album Ian recommends is actually called Incursions In Illbient, and he's right about it.

Also, check out Datach'i, a master of melodic drill & bass. And I think Timeblind might still live in NYC, too.
