current bands who are interestingly clothed/do you think most bands are really boringly dressed?

inspired by a opinion column in this months observer music monthly.... where the writer laments the loss of stylish pop stars like bowie, says a band like the libertines are excellently attired and most other bands are dreadfully dull, concluding that most great periods in pop are in no small part due to the look of the era's artists. the concluding point was that if you cant be bothered to make an effort with how you look (i.e. white stripes for instance), then chances are you wont in other areas of life (i.e your music).

this is crap, and if anything it works the other way round - artists caring more about their image at the expense of their music. there's no point in Radiohead or whoever dressing to impress really is there?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

OMM maintaining standards then, I see

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i thought of radiohead instantly - they are bores when it comes to wardrobe but you cant say the same about their music. well no, you can, cant you, but i wouldnt.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

People keep going on about the Libertines' image, I still have no idea what it even is.

PJ Harvey, Kelis, Scissor Sisters, Rachel Stevens.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

different with solo artists perhaps, seems more common, more necessary even

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Black Flag, Husker Du, Minutemen, Naked raygun, etc, etc were all pretty boring dressers...less time on wardrobe, more time on the music

you could easily make the point that there are certain artists who dress well, but don't make music worth a damn

(I was being sarcastic)

George W. ILX (ex machina), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

But Radiohead >>>>>> Libertines AFA fashion sense.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oneida are like the boringest dressed band ever. i think its perfect. they look like these totally regular dudes who were in college with you, and maybe went to a party you went to. and then they start playing, and you fall down dead from how much they rule.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

thom yorke has gone through periods of being really well dressed but these days i just feel like he should get rid of his bono sunglasses and anti-war mullet.

La Monte (La Monte), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ive spotted the military tunics the libertines wear on ebay for 50.00 each. when i was playing a live bootleg of theirs for days on end, i almost bought it.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

costumed bands shouldn't count.

Serya (Z_Ayres), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all costumes, man.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never really understood this idea that there are so few hours in the day that a band could actually spend so much time working on their outfit that they'd neglect to write any good songs. Like 'Oh god, we were so young and foolish, but I realise now that we could really have made that middle eight better if we'd not spent those extra five minutes adjusting our ties' and etc.

I assume Sparks still look great. Scissor Sisters are indeed excellent looking, particularly J Shears minute leather jacket that stops just below the shoulders.

Fergal (Ferg), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

not all bands can live off publishing deals. Some have to work day jobs, even. *gasp*

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Marilyn Manson. Yes, really.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never really understood this idea that there are so few hours in the day that a band could actually spend so much time working on their outfit that they'd neglect to write any good songs.

but can you understand the idea that while clothes can be cool and fun and entertaining and all, some people actually don't care about 'em? even some musicians?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(and, for what it's worth, husker du featured the quite dapper greg norton on bass, and the minutemen featured the fabulous hair of george hurley.)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I also don't get Naked Raygun's inclusion in that list. Jeff Pezatti alone disproves this...

The Wombles

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i really rate Girls Aloud 80s/50s fashion mash-up, although Sarah's tops are always waaay too high and tight- it makes me feel uncomfortable.

kanye is another good call- preppy look on him is very cute.

may, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

of course in trying to prove their point the OMM choose the uber-lame Libertines and show themselves to be idiots and racist ones too.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

why racist ones?

i like girls aloud's style too.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

beacause it would never occur to OMM to say that Usher, Kelis, Outkast were well dressed. they think of image as some sort of throwback to jagger or someone and use that as the yardstick. i'm exaggerating slightly, of course, but not much.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The OMM article was about British guitar bands though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, explicitly so.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ok. i just hate the OMM.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

OMM is full of well written articles saying very little but dressed up so that they seems like they are.

usher is not well dressed jed! i mean, he dresses 'well' i suppose, but no differently from any of the big-ballers you might see at any R&B/hip hop club night.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant, OMM is full of well written articles saying very little but dressed up so it seems as if they are.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe so, i just think he looks good... in spite of the fact he is a bit of a fanny. If your writing about brit guitar bands then their lack of a strong image is the last thing anyone should be worried about.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the fact badly drawn boy dresses like he rolled around in a skip outside an oxfam refuge shouldnt obscure the fact his music is about as interesting as rubbing too knitting needles together without any wool.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant 'two' of course.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the lovely dresden dolls know how to dress

kephm, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I always get a kick out of how preppy Lil Jon is dressed. I love seeing screaming freaks wearing polo shirts.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

but can you understand the idea that while clothes can be cool and fun and entertaining and all, some people actually don't care about 'em? even some musicians?

Of course! Some of my favourite bands look like homeless people! It's just sometimes this idea emerges that bands that choose to spend a lot of time on their image are doing it to the detriment of their music, which seems a bit silly.

Fergal (Ferg), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

of course it's silly, most of these bands would be shit even if they wore gunney sacks.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)
