I seriously thought that the Evanescance video from "Daredevil" was some sort of goth parody until I discovered otherwise.

Chavez "Break Up Your Band"
Cibo Matto "Know Your Chicken"
JSBX "Dang" & "Wail"(directed by Weird Al Yankovic)
Paul Simon "You Can Call Me Al"
Dresden Dolls "Girl Anachronism"
New Pornographers "The Laws Have Changed"
Fatboy Slim "Weapon of Choice"
Nirvana "In Bloom" (dresses and Variety Show versions)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Know Your Chicken seconded. I didn't realise "The Laws Have Changed" was funny.

Sheryl Crow's "A Change" video was funny to me and precisely three other people, but anyway...

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a Bunuel thing. Maybe it's less funny if you haven't seen "Simon of the Desert". They basically condensed a 75 min. film to 3 min.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Either Madness' "Our House" (can't stand the song tho!) or a Killer Dwarfs one, in which they can't get a record deal, so they literally press their own LPs, with help from an ironing board, a clothesline, lotsa melted down vinyl, a Tesla Coil (you know: that electrical sparking thing found in every mad-scientist movie), Saran Wrap, cardboard and a microwave. Lotsa fun! Can't remember if I liked the song or not - I don't even know the title...
Actually, I mostly choose to remain blissfully ignorant of video after '85 or so, but there ARE ones that I wouldn't mind seeing after friends & family make 'em sound entertaining, like that Bjork-pursued-by-teddybear one.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

A video from a Romanian surf-rock band called the Night Losers... I forget the song name, I caught it on a worldwide-music-videos show on my local public access channel. Hilarious stuff, these guys could be huge.

Chavez "Break Up Your Band"

Wow, I was coming in here to post that. My favorite video of all time. Matt Sweeney's deadpan expression is the icing on the injured male stripper cake.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Metallica's "Frantic" is a classic OMG-they're-not-kidding video.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Chavez's "Unreal Is Here" is pretty classic too.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup. And Donal Logue is in it.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'm not mistaken the bass player directed those and also did some stuff for the Upright Citizens Brigade. The guitarist co-wrote the Paul Walker vehicle Slow Ride.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Leonard Nimoy's video for "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" is the funniest video I've ever seen. It's him dancing around with kids on a set that looks like it was once used for a Star Trek episode. You know, the one where Kirk fights that Lizard Guy.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

A second vote for "Painted Soldiers".

Oates & Hall - "Jingle Bell Rock". And yes, for this video, it was apparently Oates & Hall.

When I was a kid, I always enjoyed a good David Lee Roth video. However, those have somehow made the transition from intentionally funny to unintentionally funny. From "HAHAHA, it's a Michael Jackson imitator" to "They actually went ahead and cast a Michael Jackson imitator for this shit?"

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

David Lee Roth's "Yankee Rose" features him high-kicking a giant balloon, which pops and reveals lots of little balloons. The whole band is trying WAY too hard.

Surely you're not implying that Steve Vai making his double-necked, heart-shaped guitar TALK to DLR is a failed strained attempt for teh rok?

Is that the same school featured in the video from the first single off of Passion and Warfare where an eight-year old Vai tells the teacher to "Ah, shut up!"?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I second "Separate Ways." They sure look all pissed off swaying into the camera in those muscle shirts.

Chris O., Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a pretty funny special on MTV with Janeane Garofalo, Jon Stewart, Chris Kattan and Denis Leary where they made countless great riffs on "Separate Ways." Hell, it was just funny to hear the scream in horror when the band turned to the camera in profile.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Unintentionally: 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'.

Re: Don't Worry, Be Happy: I don't know, a video that aims to be funny in one way but ends up being funny in another will never be as hilarious as a video that aims for seriousness or rockinuity but ends up being funny.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember at the time when "Wooha! Got You All In Check", before fish-eye lense work and such had become hip-hop video cliches, being extremely entertained. By that video, I mean.

You know, I think the "In the Ghetto" video was actually filmed in my friend Kara's garage. Really! He was just hanging around LA for a couple of weeks and he needed to film the video so they set up a backdrop and filmed it there. I haven't talked to Kara in years, I should call her to confirm this.

Haha, that Eastern European Star Wars video is great! I love how it's supposed to be in a spaceship, yet it clearly is someone's living room with some extra TV sets and disco lights added. And that guy has wicked energy!

actually, Laibach "Life is Life" is up there (and Montgomery Gentry "You Do Your Thing," for pretty much the same reasons.) Though for both, I don't know if fascism counts as "funny," or just "scary."

xhuxk, Tuesday, 12 April 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I can't stand the band, but the new Jet single has a hysterical video. The band is playing in the woods and there are happy cartoon critters frolicking about, and then the cartoon critters turn EVIL and start EATING EACH OTHER.

It's pretty great.

You know, I think the "In the Ghetto" video was actually filmed in my friend Kara's garage. Too cool!! I found this:

"23/24-Jun-84 US CA,West Hollywood, garage of house on Melrose Avenue: Evan English & John Hillcoat shoot the "In The Ghetto" promo video with Nick Cave."

According to Nick's comments on the DVD video collection, the only reason the video ended up so crappy was because some twit gave all the money for the video to Nick, who promptly spent it all on smack. Yay!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Lyra Jane OTM. That video almost made me like Jet. But it’s more scary than funny.

How is it that the Darkness, Spinal Tap, Ludicris, Soundgarden, Ja Rule, Warren G, Foo Fighters, and Limp Bizkit haven’t been mentioned on this thread yet?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

The funniest video I've seen was a Celine Dion one involving billowing white curtains and a motorbike. I can't remember what song it was - can anyone help?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

I have a winner and it's name is 'I didn't mean to turn you on' by Cherelle. Great Jam & Lewis song, but good god what the fuck were they thinking with the video:

It's all in black & white. Opens with Cherelle in a jungle (partly-animated). A 7 foot gorilla (ie. a guy in a dirt cheap costume) wanders up to her, scaring Cherelle - she shrieks and runs off. Cut to shot of gorilla's face gurning and looking a bit sad. Then the gorilla trips over a cartoon tree and falls, hurting himself. Cherelle bandages up his sore hand. Cherelle leaves on a little sailboat and gorilla wipes a tear from his eye and waves her off.

Now we're in Cherelle's fancy penthouse apartment. She dances about on her balcony with skyscrapers in the background, looks very nice. But then oh no! Gorilla has come to town. Cherelle is sat on her bed, preeing herself in a hand mirror when the gorilla's head appears in the window behind her - note that the gorilla is now around 80ft tall and is upside down in the window frame (he is on the top of the building, leaning over). Gorilla stands back up and does some body-popping and flips on the top of Cherelle's building. But in his excitement he bumps his head and little cartoon stars flutter about his skull.

Then gorilla smashes through Cherelle's window and grabs her in his hand. Cherelle lies sexily in his big paw, cooing 'I didn't mean to turn you on' at him. It ends with Cherelle seeming to wake up from a dream (the video turns colour) and looks at a copy of a King Kong comic next to her.
