piscesboy, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha my favorite band from age 9 to 19 FINALLY releasing one on my birthday.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

really? it is my birthday too...but REM weren't my favourite band.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

birthday money and REM purchases were pretty often linked in my youth. Since Reveal was the first REM album I couldn't listen to all the way thorugh, I don't know if it will be this time.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

my birthday is the next day, which is probably the real US release date (Tuesdays only here, no?). Not that it matters.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, h. You know you'll be the first in line at the rekkid store that day with your Stipe costume on.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i just would like a new Thin White Rope album for my birthday...sigh.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you better hope my "Stipe costume" ain't anything like my "birthday suit."

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stipe costume" is the best phrase I've heard in weeks. In or out of context.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the tone of that article kinda got on my nerves.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

or rather, the tone of stipe's comments.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the angriest...what?!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

what would a "stipe costume" look like? im good at visualizing things, but im drawing a blank here. help me, folks.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

this is what google thinks it is?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

So does stencil's Googling mean "Stipe costume" = "David Cross-a-wear"?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"At this time, as an American, I feel like the angriest pacifist in the world, and I don't think I'm alone in that. It's not an easy time to live through."

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha - michael stipe looks sooooo asian in that old picture with his dad and sister.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

so who exactly does he want to take his anger out on then?
i mean, i hope he get specific on the album.

who else is imagining eleven 'ignoreland's in a row on this thing.
(shudder)

piscesboy, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Kinda surprised they don't put the album out on election day like they did with Green.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"stipe costume" = pulling off layers and layers of shirts with "political" messages on them.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

and then getting pissy at a guy in the front row for drinking beer out of a styrofoam cup even though it's the venue that is serving the drinks in those containers.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

LEAVE NEW YORK ALONE you putzes
RETIRE ALREADY

LA75 (LA75), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"At this time, as an American, I feel like the angriest pacifist in the world, and I don't think I'm alone in that. It's not an easy time to live through."

well which one is it? the most, solo? or kinda like the others,
together?

and furthermore... anger and pacifism aren't mutually exclusive.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like the angriest pacifist in the world

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

will it change the outcome of the election?

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man i forgot about that lynch cartoon. is he still doing that?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

crikey martin that's a fair point. u think they'd have left that bit out wouldn't you? calling the poor fella 'pal' probably didn't help.
it wasn't you he was having a go at was it?

i really must get TOURFILM on dvd.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
YAY, ANOTHER GOOD CHRISTOPHER CROSS STYLE SONG!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

FEELING FAN-NY WAITING FOR NEW ALBUM. WON TICKETS TO SEE THEM IN IRVINE TODAY ON RADIO (!).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Just heard it. Oy vey. Such lazy songwriting.

To add insult to injury, Stipe sounds heavily pitch-corrected in the last verse (the ascents are way too smooth for him).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 13 September 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, even the album cover is bland and lame. What the hell are they doing?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Joseph, has the full album leaked?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

wait... There's a song "featuring Q-Tip"???!?!??!!

frankE (frankE), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

also from their site, they are selling ring tones of:

Bad Day
Losing My Religion
Man On The Moon
Shiny Happy People
Stand

Now I can be reminded of how much they've come to suck anywhere, anytime.

frankE (frankE), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I PREDICT THAT IT WILL BE A GOOD ALBUM!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict that your use of the CAPS LOCK key will convince absolutely no one that this album has even the smallest chance in hell of being good.

How about emoticons?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else like the song? Heard it while driving today and it sounds pretty good as a radio song. I could see it crossing over to "today's hits" stations and being their biggest hit in a long time.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Heard it while driving today and it sounds pretty good as a radio song..

As good as "Radio Song."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of like "Radio Song" thematically in the context of Out of Time.

Anyway, I mean that "Leaving New York" could possibly work for them as a big hit whereas they didn't hit the jackpot with, say, "The Great Beyond," "Imitation of Life," or "Bad Day."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't mention the war, but the war is everywhere, on this record.

the bossfox, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, who cares if it will be a "big hit overseas"?

Tim, you sound not unlike a 2004 Nader voter: I honestly appreciate the impulse, but the grim facts are all around you.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a question:

Was The Great Beyond at all a hit? I seem to remember it getting a lot of play but I was fairly out of it that year so I can't be sure. It's tough to say on top of things senior year of college. But it was a good song and I certainly do remember a number of people who had never listened to the band before perk up for that one.

danh (danh), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Joseph Cotten,

Meant big hit in US. They've been having big hits in Europe from the last few albums, I think.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

the great beyond was their biggest hit (ie highest chart position) ever in the uk oddly enough. dunno where the stas are but it was number 3 i think. it was fallout from the glastonbury 98 effect i think, because the song was anything but chart friendly. certainly no more so than, say 'electrolite' 3 years earlier. also the non-lp track factor didn't hurt.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

leaving new york isn't bad. especially compared with how lame the rest of the album is.
and Q-Tip's token rap is one of the worse and more stupid things in a completely forgettable album.
where are the REM we learnt to love?

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

can't face the album.

meanwhile the tour is on :

oh my...

review in MOJO (fron keith cameron) = **/*****

death knell.

piscesboy, Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Or, finally a record to get excited about. What did they give Reveal? Q gave it 5 out of 5 or something equally insane. REM reviews have just been blowing in the wind for the past ten years.

danh (danh), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
"leaving new york" is HUGE in italy

i actually really like it; whoever mentioned air supply has something, i think. but i really like it.

they're sort of a harmony group now, in that one of the reliable pleasures of listening to new r.e.m. albums are the harmonies.
