I first heard about this on Jess's blog and I just snapped up a promo for five bucks.

Why, you ask?

Because, so far, every single track is a rewrite of "Butterfly" (my favorite single of 2001). That single from the follow-up albums was about (stifles giggles) the perils of fame, but Shifty has learned his lesson. I'm five songs in and every damn on is about how he loves you and how you're so great and ooh girl you make him think sexual things and you and him should stay together like his neighbor Al Green.

The chorus of "Lolita" rhymes "lolita" with "I need ya" and "fee-vah"

I just hit the "Every Morning" rip about she's magical and puts a spell on her. This album is RELENTLESS.

between the "girl come back" song and that sweet Oakenfold collabo from a year or two ago is this interlude where he introduces his infant child, Baby Halo (or something) who gurgles and bangs on a keyboard.

"When We Were Young" (which sadly samples neither Joy Division's "Insight" or Roxy Music's "If There Was Something") is about how his youth was full of crime, arrests and gunplay ("I ain't afraid to bleed!") and WTF isn't the guy the son of a record exec?

actually the last third is REALLY disappointing. After the memorial and the reminiscence about his thug life is a song called "Take Away The Pain" which discusses his fear of death and worries about the future. The closer, which is about how he's finally found the right girl and has some Joshua Tree Lanois synth washes, is alright but tainted by the fact that Shifty got serious there for a bit. If it was just the nine songs about love than this would be a classic no-cred white rap album. It's lack of nu-metal is still very admirable.

I have seen this person at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on Sunset and Fairfax a number of times. He drives up in a massive Hummer H2 with loud rap blaring out the windows, and his license plates read "CRZYTWN" or something to that effect. It's all very upsetting. (Outside of several prejudices about his appearance and band, though, I suppose I only really object to the H2).

I really do like the single, but at the moment I can't remember what it sounds like.

Also, does Shift still believe himself to be the reincarnation of Sid Vicious, Bob Marley, and Kurt Cobain as he did during Crazytown's peak?

I dunno if he still thinks he's all that stuff, Dom, but he's definitely cut down on the I'm-hot-shit-so-much-pussy-so-little-time crap that made me hate every song on their first album aside from "Butterfly." It's definitely all about the love now (except for the I-the-teenage-badass track, which turns out was co-produced by the guitarist for No Doubtt).

Wasn't the first Crazy Town record a flop for the first year or so, before the massive overplay of "Butterfly"? The same thing happened with the Spin Doctors back in the early nineties, if memory serves.
