holy crap - Michel Portal's "Alors!!!"

was just driving home in the rain listening to the 'out' music show on the jazz station and they played this insane, hyper-monstrous free jazz recording I'd never heard. Great bass playing by what sounded like a European guy (it turned out to be Barre Phillips) and just plain intense playing all around. We sat in our driveway listening, waiting to hear what it was -

apparently it's an album called "Alors!!!" led by Michel Portal, on the Futura label (1970). The only thing I know of Portal's is his work with Alan Silva, but this shit was HEAVY. It's definitely the next record I buy. I was seriously blown away.

That'll teach me to ignore those European guys all these years.

Anybody heard it?

I've got this record, it's awesome. Should pull it out some time again and give another listen.

also if you like this you might like Francois Tusques (god did I ever prolly spell that wrong).

i will - you've never steered me wrong. Any album in particular?

I really want Alors!!! on vinyl. For some reason, i never enjoy jazz nearly as much on CD. I believe it has something to do with the packaging...did anyone reissue this on vinyl?

I don't think it's been reissued but I could be totally wrong on that. Got my copy at (I think) Dusty Groove a couple of years ago. Paris Jazz Corner might have it, too.

At the very least, if you can't find it and my CD burner starts working again, I could burn it for you.

I never seen a vinyl reissue, legit or otherwise of the Portal record. The original on Futura goes for ridiculous amounts but I've seen copies for under 50 euros from a few sellers recently. Portal's contribution for Sunny Murray's album on Shandar shouldn't be missed as well as Francois Tusques Intercommunal Music album, also on Shandar.
One of the overlooked Futura albums IMO is Raymond Boni's album, from 71' i think. He was described to me as the french Ray Russell which isn't far off the mark.
btw Roger still working on getting that Roots of Madness album up for you. Things have been a little crazy lately on the homefront this week but I'll have it for you soon.

thanks man. I'm trying to cut down the want list before I move my stuff into boxes for two months. Anything you need in return...

that'd be awesome, hstenc. Apparently Downtown Music Gallery has a copy, according to the website. I'm gonna hit the city when I get back from Tennessee and see if it's there. If not, I'd definitely be into trading you something for a burn of it. We can even exchange stuff at the Simon Finn gig, which, at this point, I've decided I'm going to no matter what.

Or, do you have the resources to host it on a temporary website or slsk it?

wish i could offer you fellas something for yr troubles - anything on Polyamory you need?

dude I have no idea when the last time DMG updated their web site, but if I get the chance I'll go by there sometime this week and scope it out. If it's still there, I could maybe buy it for you and get renumerated later. I'd put it up for downloading but I don't have a reliable way to copy mp3s from vinyl right now without my cd burner.

yeah dude, i'm good for the money if you happen to pick it up. thanks!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hey stence, if you haven't already picked this up, don't bother, I got it off slsk and that's good enough for now. If you did happen to pick it up, I'm still totally into having a real copy, so lemme know if i can paypal ya or sumthin....
