the amps "pacer" - C/D

Dug this out a few days back, haven't listened to it for a long time. Still think it sounds pretty good, especially "Tipp City, "Mom's Drunk" and "Bragging Party". Rate it higher than the last Breeders record. Certainly more classic than dud. What does everyone think?

Neil FC (Neil FC), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to find it surprising tolerable for repeat listens, but when I finally decided to toss it I only bothered to burn "Tipp City" and "She's A Girl." Definitely crucial for Deal freaks.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I might rate Title TK a little higher just because I love how Albini recorded her voice.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I love The Amps record. I saw them play at the Black Cat in DC in 95 or so and it was an excellent rock show. I remember they were selling T-shirts that said "Tammy and the Amps." When asked, the merch guy said "they made the shirts before they made the band, then they changed the name." Certainly some kind of Dealophile Collectible there.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Amps record is better than anything recorded by any other Pixies side project/followup group.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Teenager Of The Year, dude.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

take the 'e' off the end of your sentence and I'll agree.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. I always liked this one.
"I Am Decided" was actually written by Robert Pollard and given to KD in exchange for some production work on "under the bushes under the stars" IIRC.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Tammy and the Amps is a better name.

Mark M, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Breaking the Split Screen Barrier" was excellent for opening mix tapes back in the day. The opening blast comes out of nowhere, and then continues pummeling you until the song kicks in.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

EMPTY GLASSES.
WHERE'S MY SHOE?!

or is that not what she says?

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Am Decided" was actually written by Robert Pollard and given to KD in exchange for some production work on "under the bushes under the stars" IIRC

Haha -- weirdly enough, that's the only song I remember really liking from the album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

At the time, I just remember being tired of what seemed like an OMG SO INDIE ISN'T THAT COOL move.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I still find myself humming the title track from time to time, and I haven't listened to it
in four years...

Now I like to get loud
I like to go to the other side
Just to think, you were just passin` by

Ridin' around
You spat in my eye
Just to think, you were just passin` by

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

decidedly CLASSIC!!!

wouldn't make it any higher than the last Breeders album, but it is more rawkin. love the lo-fi approach, the muddled mixes, the crunchy gtrs, and Mac's drumming OTf'nM!!!!

wish there was more from this era, the band was more than capable, and deal was on top of her game.

eedd, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

CLASSIC.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The song "Pacer" is wonderful and makes it onto lots of mixes. "Tipp City" also great and I was chuffed the Breeders played those songs when they were touring for "Title TK".

marvin wang (marvin wang), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. A fucking classic album. A great sing-along album.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely classic. I was thrilled when KD sang Amps songs at the Breeders shows I saw on their Title TK tour.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Now if only most of the vocals didn't sound like they were recorded from two rooms over.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's a bit of a bummer.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

No it isn't. Gold classic a galaxy of stars one reason to like the US 90s

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I sold my GBV records, I'd rather lose a finger than this

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bragging Party" is the best song Kim Deal ever recorded.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Amps record, but I actually prefer The Muffs' cover of "Pacer" to the original. No idea if that song every got onto a Muffs album though. I just have it on a 7".

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd actually anticipate another Amps album more than another Pixies album!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I would too, Gear...

Though I do think Teenager of the Year is the Pixies splinter project to beat.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

no love for the original of full on idle? god i loved that tune

back in the day pacer was much more listened to than last splash among my group because "it's just as good, but fuzzier"

mig (mig), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh fuzzy

I listened to Pacer in the car this morning.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I read an interview with Kim Deal (in Magnet?) about the time Title TK was realeased where they asked her if there was anything she wished she'd done differently and she said something like:
"Yeah, I shoulda just called that Amps record the 3rd Breeders album."

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

my all time pixies related list is still
1. trompe le monde
2. bossanova
3. teenager of the year
4. pacer
5. frank black

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The intro of "Hoverin'" should be sampled and turned into a massive crunk hit.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i tried.
it no worky good.

eedd, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
here we go, the amps thread.

ned i'm afraid i have to heartily disagree with your "omg so indie isn't that cool" take on this one. i think it's just what she wanted to do, what sounded good to her - and it sounds good to me!

Surmounter (rra123), Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

lol i guess we all know i'm a fan of the deal. :-)

:-) i love it so much

Surmounter (rra123), Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Did the "Breeders" versions of these tracks ever make it out on bootleg or anything? Am I wrong in remembering that Kim did record these songs with the band and then scrapped it? For waht it's worth, I like this album as much as Last Splash or Pod. Oddly, I've never heard Title TK. I should get it, right?

Tyler W (tylerw), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

u should absolutely get Title TK. it's pretty Ampsy.

Surmounter (rra123), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

I think of Title TK and The Amps as a total double act. They're both great.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 8 February 2007 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Am I wrong in remembering that Kim did record these songs with the band and then scrapped it?

I think so, the whole reason for calling it a new band was that Kelley, at least, was unavailable. (Jo Wiggs was probably just less geographically convenient.)

summersault 1995 (kit brash), Friday, 9 February 2007 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

aww kell.

i need to point out again how not right this is.

a song just came on the radio and it reminded me how surprising, lush and gorgeous this album is.

Surmounter, Friday, 27 February 2009 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

still love it when this pops up randomly in my itunes

So, how are we feeling about this album these days? Lotsa love for the new Breeders around these parts. Looking back on the KD journey, this album seems to me to be such an important element to the legacy she's built.

softspool, Saturday, 17 November 2018 03:41 (seven years ago)

Still love this album to pieces, actually

It’s obviously a classic.

I can hum every single track from memory

rip van wanko, Saturday, 17 November 2018 14:51 (seven years ago)

pacer is my fave kim deal record. and she has an amazing batting average. all the breeders albums are v good-great

mizzell, Saturday, 17 November 2018 15:21 (seven years ago)

A fave of mine too. I think there was a big Pacer celebration in a different thread not too long ago.

Deal Freaks would be a pretty good name for a band. Sounds like the opener on a Wet Tuna / Garcia Peoples tour or something.

alpine static, Monday, 11 April 2022 06:53 (three years ago)

This is the best Kim Deal record, period.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 11 April 2022 10:00 (three years ago)

I agree! I love all the Breeders albums but the Amps album is perfect

na (NA), Monday, 11 April 2022 12:55 (three years ago)

The "Full on Idle" recorded for Title TK sounds like the demo (which is to say I prefer the Amps').

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 April 2022 13:24 (three years ago)

Yeah we're straight, we get high on our music

J. Sam, Monday, 11 April 2022 13:45 (three years ago)

Miraculously there are multiple full Amps live sets from 1995 on YouTube

etc.

calstars, Monday, 11 April 2022 16:33 (three years ago)

i love this record *a lot* but it seems like a stretch to say it's her best ever. this woman recorded Pod (and others).

y'all got me to pull it up and listen to it, though!

alpine static, Monday, 11 April 2022 18:50 (three years ago)

Ranking Breeders/Amps albums is an impossible task. Sometimes the best is Title TK, sometimes it's Pacer, sometimes it's Pod, sometimes it's even Mountain Battles.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 11 April 2022 19:38 (three years ago)

Different strokes, etc.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 11 April 2022 19:40 (three years ago)

i'm almost always going to go for the trashiest recordings in an artist's catalog but i also appreciate the consistency in production/tone of this album vs the breeders albums (which again, i also love)

na (NA), Monday, 11 April 2022 19:40 (three years ago)

Pod I place least, but it has miles of attitude.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 April 2022 20:18 (three years ago)

they're all so good

absolute legendary genius human

There's a bit in here that must be about the Title TK sessions - Kim had a 30 second loop and asked Nieto to turn it into a full song, 4AD wound up flying him to England to mix it properly.
