New School Speed Garage??!!!

Is it true that there's been a resurgence of "Ripgroove"-style records in the UK? There's a small-but-loyal UK Garage scene here in Toronto, but it tends to cover the more breakbeat-oriented end of the genre, and grime has yet to really catch on here.

Can anyone recommend some new 4-to-the-floor tracks?

Odd as it may sound, but:

Reeloop - Fucking Society (DJ Jean Mix)

is a straight up '97 style speedgarage track, 4/4 with a huge bassline. Didn't see that coming from those cheesepeddlers...

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you talking about newskool breaks? DnB style basslines with slower, more garagey beats.

Urban Hero - Jamieson

Decoy - Agent X

138 Trek - DJ Zinc

All fairly old, now.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

artifact - from russia with dubz ep (solo recordings)

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like Jaimeson's 'Take Control' (and last year's 'True' of course), on the poppier tip

187 Lockdown 'Kung Fu' - C/D??

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

obviously classic

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as good as 'Gunman'.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm out of touch with the 4x4 garage of 2004, but there were some mighty tracks in this vein a year or two ago. first off, there's my favourite remix of last year - MJ Cole's reworking of Lamb's "Gabriel".

D'n'd RULED 4x4 garage in 2002, search:
Beverley Knight - Shoulda Woulda Coulda (D'n'd 4 On Da Floor Mix)
Blazin' Squad - Standard Flow (D'n'd remix feat. Elephant Man)
Irv Gotti feat. Ja Rule, etc. - Down 4 U (D'n'd Conemelt Mix)
2 Man Gang - E Z When U Want 2 (D'n'd 4x4 Mix)

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

MJ Cole's remix of 'Mindless and Broken' by 3rd Core is fantastic, although it's not really a floor filler.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

His mix of Roots Manuva's 'Dreamy Days' was fine on reflection.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard that. I'll try and download it now. I absolutely love "Dreamy Days."

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

is that D'n'D as in Dillon and Dickins ?

Oh man I used to love me some Dillon n Dickins remixes (Gifted's "Do I" springs to mind instantly)

also, I think a lot of the new "grime" stuff borders perilously close to the speed garage of old

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Are you talking about newskool breaks? DnB style basslines with slower, more garagey beats."

Actually, the DJ Zinc-type sound I'm familiar with - I'm looking more for the 4-on-the-floor-meets-wobbly-bass sound of '97-'98, only updated.

I'll check some of these tracks tonight. Thanks for all your replies - keep the recommendations coming!!!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

DnD feat dom perignon- Got my self together

nothing like speed garage but its a wicked DnD track

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Got Myself Together" seconded!

"is that D'n'D as in Dillon and Dickins?"

nah, that's Dnd as in 'Deadly n Dangerous'.

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite nu-school speed garage track (or "urban house") from last year was by Rapid but I can't remember what it was called now. Totally overblown Todd Edwards rip though.

Yeah The DnD remix of "Standard Flow" is brilliant, but by rights actually belongs to that period pre-"Pulse X" when 4/4 was really big with the proto-grime crowd.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

There's always Todd himself who keeps doing exactly the same thing. He recently released "Stormy Day" with Damon 'What You Want, What You Need' Trueitt, and it's typically wonderful.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

qualified and duncan powell seem to be the only consistent believers from my lazy sidelook anyway. babycakes obv, and i think qualified did a rmx of that which might be the one on the actual 12 or it could be a diff one. but i dunno abt babycakes really. not quite the same but grime is starting to nervously flirt with 2step a bit more i think ('special girl' style) but then silverdollar guy was yelling "sellouts, more fooked oop mental shit is your place grime dudes" wtf! whatev

prima fassy (mwah), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah drama is on solo recs too, is that ez's label? it's all v todd style tho but its pleasant still

prima fassy (mwah), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What's up with Femme Fatale's 1xtra show ending?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Damon Trueitt. Spencer, I kiss ya.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

this part in the middle of Femme Fatale's archived mix this week is HOTTTTTT:

J & S feat. Xenia Lewis - Hot (4 Fate)
Brandy feat. Kanye West - Talk About Our Love; Qualified Remix (White)
Norris Da Boss feat. Rose Windross - Destination Weekend; Wideboys Remix (W Records)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Do people like Scandalous?

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't know...

While we're at it, can anyone explain the story behind Somore's "I Refuse" and Industry Standard's "What You Want, What You Need"?

They've obviously got the same vocal track - I'm just curious as to which came first, if one was a boot of the other, or if the same producers were behind both, blahblahblah...

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh I meant Drama not Rapid before obv. Rapid is not Todd Edwardsy at all!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

man talk about sick joke/fantasy, i was flipping out!

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you imagine? It would be like T99 - Anasthaesia (Tuff Jam Mix)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(terra tubby is REAL btw!)

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(i want to hear that! Terra is such a fairy dust producer - only just got my hands on the "One Wish" remix and it's like he just pours sugar and whipped cream and crunchy bits of chocolate all over the original)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah or the er only 2 sound effects he has in the entire world! at first i thought it was typical grime shoddiness but now i think its funny and cool, and his tone has leavened a lot more lately instead of him being a lame uk shondrae, and shola ama 'with you' is fabulous

tangentially er terra danjah wd probly be the most appealing grimette producer to a 2step fan? shudders and shimmies

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I think definitely yes, at least the 2-step fan who likes Sunship anyway. Target is also very 2-steppish in my opinion but it's more melancholy bittersweet a la Y-Tribe's "Enough Is Enough" or Artful Dodger's better stuff ("Tingles 2000" remix 4eva!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 July 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ok yeah i think i can see that. also target has a cleanliness about him i perhaps wrongly link with most 2step in my head. it makes him the grime utopian

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 30 July 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

er agent x anyone?

scandalous unlimited are from watford!! man, that pretty cool irrelevant

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Terror, Target and Danny Weed have these amazing melodies that might appeal to the 2step lot but their tracks have none of the fussy obsession with swing drums. theirs is more skunked out like Timbaland at 138 i find. just cant get enough of these three's production at the moment.

martin (martin), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Watford Weather"!

shola ama 'with you' is fabulous
Amen to that.

just found this neat site with several mixes of recent(ish) nu speed garage:

http://www.sixspeed.net

I've only downloaded the "Street Sessions 2004 pt 1" mix so far -
the opening Qualifide track is utterly lovely. and there's more great stuff later on too!

Mind Taker, Thursday, 23 June 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

well to be exact there's also some 2step there, but there's a lotta 4x4 to keep me happy - i've been in such a speed garage mood lately!

if only Duncan Powell's "Something Wrong" EP got a CD release, i'd snap it up in a second!

Mind Taker, Thursday, 23 June 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I understand that the editor of IDJ (International DJ) is a devotee of the resurgent style which he calls bassline house, so check the mag for reviews etc

Woodblockhead, Friday, 24 June 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

bassline, niche, its all good. go to birmingham, sheffield or leeds. sheffield is like the mother node of this. the principle label is studiobeatz records which is a shop on west st, sheffield. there ae nights at the adelphi in sheffield, or loads in leeds. leeds city market has loads of stalls with kids seling boxes of cdrs. Dj Richard, Naughty Nick, the Organs Vs Bass series, all recurring themes. Duncan Powell sits in the middle of "scally" bassline, and respectable southern urban house/speed garage.

I sent some cds to simon reynolds and he said that he couldnt hear the difference between it and speed garage. well its newer, slightly faster, and something about it is sort of cheesier, more ravey. more snare rolls etc. its come from hardcore i think up here, with a desire for some elastic basslines, hence the move to speed garage. old speed garage tunes are now worth quite a bit apparently.

niche is a club in sheffield which is well dodgy. I think the best term for it is niche music or bassline. one thing i can say is that it is BIG up north/north east (yorkshire). its everywhere.

i think its why no one is into grime up here, its becasue hey are to busy listening to the bassline

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 June 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah ok its basically speed garage

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 June 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

I have to say I'm really intrigued by this bassline house stuff. I've been listening to some old Speed Garage mixes recently and noting certain similarities with a lot of the "funkier" end of the minimal house spectrum - this synopated skippyness of the percussion and small, glitchy, samples link the two together.

Minimal Garage anyone? I think I'll fire up Cubase sometime this weekend!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 24 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

i never understand why normal house never appropriated the wobbly* bass lines, the elastic thing. garage always had the biggest basslines, but it never seemed to cross over. the nearest i ever heard to a house tune with the big bassline was codec and flexors "crazy girls", any other examples?

* me in a dodgy phone shop in leeds:
what new bassline cds have you got?
15 yr old kid behind counter: do you like wobblers or £$£$!"£$ (undecipherable)?"
me: ......

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 June 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

new mixes available for download on Duncan Powell's site. . some wicked abstract speed garage in the oldskool mix, and I'm LOVING the second track in the 'regular' jan '06 set.
