Recently, spurred by a thread, I dug out the Shop Assistants album and found it was far better than I remembered it being.

I buy all kinds of things cuzza ILM now. Mostly electronic stuff. Fennesz, Luomo, Lali Puna, and all that Kompakt stuff. I was at the store last week buying Kompakt 100 and Total 5 and I picked up The Lemon Of Pink by The Books for Maria. I told her that she would really like it. Now, I have never even heard The Books, but from what people have said on ILM (I think starting with Momus) I knew it would be her kinda thing. And it was. She really likes it. And so do I. I also bought the Galaxie 500 dvd, a Converge dvd, and the new Pan Sonic, but they are non-ILM influenced purchases.

Perhaps it is hubris, but I would love to know if anyone bought anything cuzza something I posted about a band. Maybe I don't want to know though. Cuz I would want to give people their money back if they hated it and I don't have the money right now cuzza all the stuff I bought last week.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, you needed ilm to know about jay-z? do you live in a cave?

I figure it's one of those 'you know OF someone but you're not really impelled to check them out until you read something praising him or her' situations.

Simon Finn PASS THE DISTANCE. I asked my local indie shop if they could order a copy of this yesterday after reading a thread on it. They had just gotten it in that day. I bought it after work and was not disappointed. Has anyone heard the new ep?

Yes, I had been aware of Jay-Z's existence. However, ILM's praise led me to buy the Blueprint, and now it's a beloved CD.

YAY!

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

As a longtime lurker this damned board has cost me thousands of dollars worth of additional music purchases and hundreds of hours downloading shit off slsk.

However it's well worth it...
1. The Fall
2. Can
3. Gang of Four
4. Britney - Toxic :[

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to be skeptical when EVERYBODY on ILM big-upped some hot new track, but then I heard LCD Soundsystem. Now I just accede to the groupthink, and am much happier for it.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Wk sort of tho I thought the "She is Beautiful" video was pretty cute already. Daft Punk, maybe? Tho that was sort of "oh it's IN I might as well" tho only cos so many people here liked it so

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dismemberment Plan
Andrew WK
Max Tundra
Basement Jaxx (like the Jay-Z thing, got me to check them out more)
Disco Inferno

I'm pretty much a sucka for the ILM party line - seems I like most of what gets talked about a lot here.

disco inferno - di go pop (slowly getting into it)
boards of canada
piano magic
durutti column (not sure if i got into them via ilm first, absolutely amazing, almost as essential as joy div)
montgolfier brothers, i think, best english band after the field mice

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, Piano Magic, as well. I forgot about them. I thought that was pre-ILX but no, it was a Gareth suggestion.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ /rupture! That George W./"Close to you"/Jungle Bros. thing on Bedouin Sessions is my favorite music this year.

Also:
Daphne and Celeste
Midi, Maxi, & Efti
Lifter Puller

I consider it an ILM success story that I found out about the availability of Yung Wu's Shore Leave on CD from dlp9001, but that's an old cassette favorite so it doesn't quite make it by the rules of this thread.

brian patrick (brian patrick), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Franco Battiato

Comsat Angels.

The fact that I was able to find all their stuff years after it went oop still boggles my mind.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk
Basement Jaxx
Fiery Furnaces
Orbital

I didn't think it possible to feel as indebted to an internet messageboard as I do right now.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Two in particular that I really probably may have never heard of, that are now two of my favorite things to listen to: Nellie McKay and Dizzee Rascal.

Ash Ra Tempel

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been reading ilm for so long it's difficult to sort out all of the bands that were recommended here. At least a third of what I currently listen to, probably.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Basement Jaxx
Jay-Z (mainstream hip-hop in general)
Talk Talk
Bark Psychosis
Scissor Sisters
Max Tundra

Also, insofar as this board has kick-started my interest in dance music, you could also probably add Erlend Oye, Felix Da Housecat, and Junior Senior to the list, even though my buying those albums wasn't directly because of an ILM thread. You could also add Luomo, except that's not actually a success story!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

herbert hebert (herbert hebert), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

as of this very minute, jah wobble's 'betrayal'

also, disco inferno, which i imagine is the case for many ILMers seeing as how ned will ship the 5 eps to you like a true gentleman

jake b. (cerybut), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

One tries. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned is my favourite artist I've discovered on ILM.

And whoever posted the Coldplay vs Yoplait thread, way back when.

Hot Chip - had the pleasure of catching them in London

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Talk Talk - So far everything I have I love but I started with Spirit of Eden.

Toxic - Britney Spears
and Kylie's stuff - I never woulda bought this on my own.

mostly though its been great to confirm purchases I had been thinking about but had never gotten off my ass to do.

Like Justus Kohncke

hector (hector), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, could you send me the Disco inferno e.p.s? I forgot that you did that for people. You are nice. If you are too busy don't worry about it. I will send you some stuff in return. Maybe some Katatonia? Or maybe some of my new favorite one-man-band, Anti. He is the death-metal Jandek. Just one brilliant guy on extremely overamped and fuzzy bass telling tales of destruction and evil in what sounds like an echo chamber. You have to hear him to believe him. Or I could send you the musique concrete recording I made of an episode of the Sally Jesse Raphael show. Or I could send you all of the above.

Anyway:

3 bona-fide "i wouldn't have discovered these great acts had it not been for ILM" (that i can think of offa the top of my head):

1. the passage
2. dizzee rascal
3. orange juice

acts/genres/et. al. in whom my love/interest was re-generated by ILM:

1. late 70s/early 80s synthpop/new romantic stuff generally
2. the 80s black-overcoat brigade (the cure, depeche mode, new order, echo and the bunnymen, bauhaus)
3. young marble giants
4. gary numan (and especial thankee to colin et. al. for getting me to re-listen and re-think the post-telekon stuff dance and i, assassin)

stuff i was getting into/rediscovering even w/t ILM (but for whom ILM was a sort of "support group"):

1. current mainstream hip-hop/r&b (the jay-z/crunk thing)
2. felix da housecat/miss kittin
3. current mainstream pop

where i have failed -- none of y'all love frank zappa any more than when i 1st got here. oh well, you can't win 'em all :-(

where ILM has failed -- i still can't stomach 70s prog. i guess that i will never get genesis, yes, et. al.

A Nation Mourns

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Most recently DJ/Rupture, Big & Rich, and the Hold Steady. And I haven't listened to any of them more than once. Well, that's not true. Big & Rich I listened to three times, but I still haven't been able to make it to the end of the disc.

I do owe a big debt to ILM for Timbaland guidance, as suggestions posted helped me compile my (now 8-disc!) Timbaland boxed set.

And now I kind of want to check out Montgolfier Brothers ...

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

What's in that 8-disk Timbaland boxed set?

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I knew of Susie Ibarra before I got to ILM, but sundar inspired me to check her music out, which isn't hugely important to me in itself, but I think finding that I liked some of it made me more interested in looking at other contemporary avant-garde/a.g. jazz people.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 29 July 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Streets and Disco Inferno.

And, in turn, RS tipped me off to the wonders of Mephista.

Oh yeah, Fushitsusha too, from Julio. On the Corner.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"A Nation Mourns"

What about Sheila Grant's Baby with their fantastic cover version of Gruppo Sportivo's Beep Beep Love?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

RS tipped me off to the wonders of Mephista.

I guess I should have sold you my copy while I had a chance. If you can verbalize what you like about them, I'd be interested in reading your comments.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Kitchens of Distinction
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden/Laughing Stock
Mountian Goats

All come to mind.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

@josh in chicago: i don't know any stuff you mention there. is it all hip-hop or something? be careful with the montgolfiers. they inhabit a totally different universe. close to nick drake, the field mice and belle and sebastian. i can also see neil young and joni mitchell waving to them from the other side of the atlantic.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks sundar, I actually got that arto lindsay record (1-26) that you posted a thread about a few months ago.

actually there's a ton of stuff like, say, sun city girls and getting into ragga over the last year or so.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax, you saw this, right? I thought that discovering his identity would free me, but found the answers far more haunting than the mystery.

(Jon L), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

omg thank you so very much for that!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

wait! what song is the clip for? "jabdah" or "visitors"?

I always thought he was saying "JUMP UP"... hahaha.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah yeah KILLING JOKE!!!

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned is my favourite artist I've discovered on ILM.

:-D

Ned, could you send me the Disco inferno e.p.s?

Sure thing. All your suggestions for exchange intrigue me!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

That clip gygax linked to is truly astonishing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

>I always thought he was saying "JUMP UP"...

nope. Jaa-Bahh... Jabba-De-Hut!

A strange voice calling from the space.

ENTER, Music Hunter

(Jon L), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahahahhaa.... you have officially blown my mind. thank you jon!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely amazing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing I can think of is King Sunny Ade, but I suppose that's enough to make ILM worthwhile to me.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

stop making fun of Koto! He wrote some absolute classic italo-disco tracks. Jabdah's cool and Japanese War Game is beautiful. And I'm a bit confused but according to that interview, he may be the person responsible for the Hypnosis version of the Blade Runner End Titles which can be heard on Mixed Up at the Hague. That track is awesome.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

mid to late 70's Can
Alexander Robotnick
old Catherine Wheel singles/b-sides I used to love but wouldn't have willingly re-experienced in a million years without ILM

Sad to say I probably wouldn't have paid any attention to the new Orbital without ILM either.
