Help me identify the highpoints of Flora Purim's jazz-warbling, fusion-tastic Brazilliant career. I think I've only heard three songs (the ones on BGP's 'Jazz Collective), one of which ('Open Your Eyes You can Fly) contains an offensively positive message, so I was wondering what else is worth a listen.

There are one or two recommendations scattered around, but you know...

um, you probably want to start with her first u.s. solo lp, butterfly dreams (1973), from which you can decide if you want to get the rtf lps or maybe the more relaxed lps that followed, my favorite of which is stories to tell.

if others reading this have a low tolerance for corny fusion, best to start with either the bmg reissue of her early (1964, pre-airto even) bossa lp "flora e mpm", or with the best of her 90s lounge jazz lps, "live at ronnie scott's". i also have a yana purim lp from the 80s, but it's pretty bland in spite of the presence of bonfa on a few tracks (if i'm remembering this right).

i read somewhere that she once cut a brazilian 7" in the late 60s of adeus maria fulho, that standard also heard on the first mutantes lp - i wonder if it's on any compilations.

She's got a song called "Premeira Estrela" that I voted for on that "pick one song of the '00s" thread. Fantastic! Maybe "offensively positive", since it's about life going on long after the thrill of living is gone, but it's got a gorgeous melody and light-but-driving percussion. Its album, '03's Speak No Evil, is the only thing I've ever heard of hers, though. It seems like her version of "Speak No Evil" was also good.

Her live album "500 Miles High" from the seventies is very good, with Ron Carter playing the bass and Milton Nascimento joining the band to sing his "Cravo e Canela" with her. Airto is also in good form on that record.

By the way, I don't think Flora's and Airto's seventies material is "corny fusion" at all, in my opinion it lacks the negative aspects of fusion.

that's a very debatable point. for starters, i think lots of people would say "you're looking for a flora purim record? definitely start with return to forever!" which is not the best advice for the fusion-averse, you must agree. and here, see, you're mentioning milton, which is appropriate: many american fans of tropicalia have quite a bit of trouble stomaching milton, especially mid 70s through mid 80s milton - he's far too fusiony, new agey, hopeful-mystical except in small doses.

that said, i don't mean to imply that a mid-70s flora purim album is anything like a grover washington jr album, which sort of defines corny fusion for me, so maybe that wasn't the best phrase, you're right.
