How do you feel about George Michael?

I am so impressed by "Amazing" -- maybe one of his best songs. Hearing it made me pull out Listen Without Prejudice and Faith. I know he makes music that a lot of you generally don't like, but I'd hope that you'd at least admit that he does overly produced, slick pop songs better than just about anyone else.

frankE (frankE), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the new single? Is that the video that looks like it has Orlando Bloom as part of the people in the cyber-lounge enjoying the show?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like his remixing/whatevering of Flawless that's making the rounds now (where he sings over the top of that track by The Ones from a few years ago)

Heard good things about the new album but haven't listened to it yet

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The new album isn't very good. "Cars and Trains" is great, though.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel that breaking up Wham! was a brilliant idea, even though he's been hit or miss since then.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoy his music. I also like the work he does on Deon Estus - Heaven Help Me

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always held him to a high standard because "Freedom 90" is possibly my favourite single of all time, and the big Wham singles are also terrific.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

He's really underrated as a singer

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"WORSHIP IT OR BE DESTROYED."

I always liked how "Praying for Time" was his Cocteau Twins song (instrumentally)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Off the boil recently, But he's written some incredibly classy pop songs - "Fast Love", "Careless Whisper", "Outside".

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the one name greats who earned it. Saw him at a restaurant I work in recently with his big bear boytoy. Nice guy, diet coke drinker, made out a little with the bear, tipped well.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a dick.

Getting called "Eminem" by the Insane Clown Possee while they're blowing you - C or D?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no problem with him. Wham! was not my cup of tea, but some of his solo stuff was quite alright. The wife adores him, so I hear a lot of him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Caught his Oprah special yesterday, and although her fans were quite into it, it's a shame that George Michael won't get a fair shake in the States ever again because of his orientation -- to say nothing of his age as well -- even though "Patience" has some solid strong points that would light up the current radio scene. Seems that the U.S. likes male homosexuals in music to be either dead (Cole Porter) or old and asexual (Elton John), but whither someone like George, who clearly still elicits naughty thoughts in women and men alike? One of my female friends swears that one night with her could turn him "back to straight" (her words), and you just don't get that with Elton, do you?

Erick H (Erick H), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my female friends swears that one night with her could turn him "back to straight" (her words), and you just don't get that with Elton, do you?

You know why? Most women aren't sexually attracted to their aunties

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I find him horribly, horribly slick. Something this slick should just slide straight off, but for some reason it clings, and offends. Perhaps its the feeling that I'll never think he's as good as he does.
I can usually ignore bands I don't like but for some reason just thinking about the way he sings makes me feel angry. It really is irrational hatred. I know there are a thousand people who are much, much worse but I find it possible to ignore them.

and I LOVED Wham but, then, I was 10 at the time. Perhaps it was Andrew Ridgeley's influence that made the band great.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The music video for "Too Funky" was a cultural touchstone.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

His dancing is uber-terrible.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I find there to be something a bit creepy about him that permeates his music in some way. I really don't enjoy it at all.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like most of his solo stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

These responses crack me up. It's like people who don't like him (I am one) need to see a psychiatrist.

Bimble (bimble), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I really liked Shoot the Dog. And Jesus to a Child.

Is it true he's a fan of joy division?

de, Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

R.I.M.A. - his dancing in the 'Fast Love' video always cracks me up.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

George is a decent man and a great songwriter who got sucked off course by the evil world of The Charts. Once he starts releasing stuff for free I'm hoping he'll knock out some deranged queer 2-step.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it true he's a fan of joy division?

I've heard that he ranks Closer by Joy Division as his favorite-ever album....which I find slightly hard to believe, but hey...it could be true, I suppose.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

These responses crack me up. It's like people who don't like him (I am one) need to see a psychiatrist.

What can I say? George Michael brings out ALL that latent anger..

Pass the seroxat, Bimble..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Friday, 30 July 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe pharmaceutical companies pay George Michael to do what he does.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the most recent album will make my top ten of the year. maybe no one else's, but fuggit. at the very least, i recommend a download and a spin of the harddrive. the man is so damn good at what he does. too bad about the plastic surgery, though.

I'm kind of curious about this.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Faith was one of the first albums I ever got, wore the hell out of it, but I haven't taken him seriously since my preteens. Faith is one hell of a cassette

tremendoid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanted to like Patience. I really did, being one of the 2,000 people in America who bought Songs From the Last Century. But, at the risk of being a poppist, I would note that to my dismay he just doesn't write refrains anymore; and I think that keeps him off the radar as much as ageism and homophobia. The new material is doing well on the dance charts, but beyond "Amazing," "Freeek '04," and "Flawless," there isn't much memorable on there. At least with "Cowboys and Angels" and "Jesus to a Child," there was something that stayed present in your head long after the record was over.

Speaking of "Cowboys and Angels," please give the man some credit for writing some impressively intricate, recursive rhyme schemes.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I loooove "last christmas." it's the perfect bubblegum pop christmas song. probably my ULTIMATE guilty pleasure.

his solo tunes are hit or miss, but in general I like the George.

My feelings on WHAM? Gayest. Band. Ever.

cw28 (cw28), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "One More Try" is my favorite George Michael song. It's so good.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Faith was one of the first albums I ever got, wore the hell out of it, but I haven't taken him seriously since my preteens.

In that case, at least give Listen Without Prejudice a shot. Such an underappreciated album. Since enough time has past since your preteens (I assume) you should be able to enjoy it for what it is -- a fantastic, mature pop album. Skip "They Won't Go When I Go" first time through, though, as it's a bit of a dirge.

communist kickball (m coleman), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

Faith is a pop classic with monster singles and enjoyable album cuts. Listen Without Prejudice also a good album but not as important as George thought it wpuld be, still though his version of "They Won't Go Where I Go" is grebt.

His music got hella boring after that.

Also special mention for "I Knew You Were Waiting for Me".

Thumbs down for his bland cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me"

warner herzog zwei (San Te), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

My last.fm radio is playing Careless Whisper now. *Swoon* Such mature lyrics for a young man at the time.
