tracks in a similar vein or just any hip hop?

search the thread on 'breezy hip-hop' for some suggestions

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Humble Mumble" by Outkast. It baffles me why it wasn't released as a single.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bug Powder Dust" by Bomb the Bass (Kruder and Dorfmeister remix)

Not quite as good, but still good - "The Force" by Aim

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

just hip-hop. I'm after some A-grade, top notch shit that I haven't heard before (!)

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

a lot of the hip-hop heads don't seem to post anymore :(

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

well if you stopped listening to "good" hip hop in 93, i think you've got a LOT of catching up to do

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you're being a bit presumptuous, Jason. I was just listening to that song and had a yearning for some more stuff of that kind of quality that I'm not acquainted with. Perhaps this thread should be retitled Hip-Hop Gems That Aren't Widely Known?

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Hit Song" - DJ Format feat. Abdominal

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Non-Phixion "Cult Leader"
Mos Def "Speed Laws" (by far my favorite song offa Black On Both Sides)
Madvillain "All Caps"
Cee-Lo "Big Words (Damn)"
Lifesavas "Hellohihey"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, please do!

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Lordz of the Underground - Psycho (actually most of their first album is great)

Bush Babeez - I don't remember the song's title but the single was good

MadKap - "The Whole Kit and Kaboodle"

oh and i CAN'T beleive I forgot about...

YALL SO STUPID. Man they were our favorite group, the best kept secret, even among our friends. They were on the short-lived Atlanta-based Rowdy label (a good label - Da King and I also had an album out on that label called Contemporary Jeep Music that's worth seeking out) and their self-titled album is the SHIT. Pretty much great from start to finish (with the usual hip hop pitfalls, natch - skits, obligatory song about "Skinz," etc) - not sure if you'll find it on filesharing but try to find "Introduce Me" or "Van Full Of Pakistans" on p2p for a taste

they were WAY better than Souls at their peak (and 93 till was a mighty high peak IMHO)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything Rowdy Records put out in their short-ass lifespan was fucking GOLDEN.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Nasa and I were the only East Coast kids up on that shit at the time

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't have heard of them, except that they put out the Fishbone (who I had been a fan of since I was 9) album Chim Chim's Badass Revenge, right after their volatile break from Sony, so I was all like "uh huh, now who are these Rowdy folks then?" and lo and behold all this great hip-hop shit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

basically you just want foax to name GOOD hip-hop songs? ok...

big punisher - punish me
dmx - who we be
geto boys - i just wanna die
ghostface killah - wildflower
mobb deep - right back at you
bone thugs - down '71 (the getaway)
snoop dogg - the shiznit
gza - shadowboxing
jay-z feat dmx - money, cash, hoes
capone n noreaga - parole violators
dj quik - sweet black pussy
rza - b.o.b.b.y
method man - tical
notorious big - suicidal thoughts
the beatnuts - off the books

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, man. Some of that stuff is GOOD, but not at all as uppity / lighthearted / clever (well, GZA is way clever, but...) as the Herio crew.

DMX? Ninja please.

and if you want Beatnuts, you gotta go back to the Intoxicated Demons EP, which is classic. The s/t album is decent too, but they never did anything half as good as "Reign of the Tec" - best Sadat sample ever (and lordy there are many)?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

redman - time 4 sum aksion
wu tang clan - careful (click, click)
canibus - 2000BC
ice cube - you can't fade me
gravediggaz - bang your head
nas - nas is coming
ice-t - mind over matter
method man feat. cappadonna - sweet love
odb - shimmy shimmy ya
ll cool j - boomin system
warren g - this is the shack
tupac - life goes on

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the following are all highly recommended...

dmx - bring your whole crew
dmx - keep your shit the hardest
dmx - slippin'
dmx - school street
dmx - what's my name?
dmx - x gonnna give it to ta
dmx - one more road to cross
dmx - party up
dmx - here we go again
dmx - the professional

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

dmx - when i'm nothing; DMX raps over syrupy disco breaks

az - hoe happy jackie; more illmatic-esque wistful reminiscence from AZ

capone n noreaga - channel ten; zoned out on the bus listening to this, the beat is almost psychedelic, kinda sleepily menacing, sounds like what El-p tried to cop on 'the cold vein'; i guess if you don't have 'the war report' you should just get that

tk, Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The best Beatnuts' track is "No Escapin' This (single version)". Fact.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 July 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

kurious - walk like a duck (or the whole a constipated monkey cd even)

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 31 July 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz otm!!!

even pete nice's solo joint had some decent tracks

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 31 July 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

thnx roger and i second (or third or whatever) van full of pakistans with some reservations...i relistened to it about 6 months ago and found the rhymes on the single (uh...forget the tunes name "think of all my problems, all i ever do is try and solve 'em") about slapping women to be rather offensive given the otherwise bouncy context.

also (recently made threadworthy by djdee i think) the ahmad disc from 94 is nice. try "back in the day" to sample.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 1 August 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

POV is being taken a bit liberally ...

So my only suggestion right now is "Crosstown Beef" by Medina Green feat. Mos Def

Dare, Sunday, 1 August 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i was going to mention Kurious

POV is being taken a bit liberally ...

ah, whatever. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...

OCP (OCP), Sunday, 1 August 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz - i'm pretty sure the single was called Van Full of Pakistans, the album is self-titled. I'm not sure that he's talking about beating women necessarily, it's a little ambiguous, especially if you consider the time - who knows what kinda Hotlanta slang was popular? The lyrics, from memory, are:

"All these bitches always gettin' in my way
Buy me this ring and that ring, OK?
So if you think that you're better than me, come on and bring it:
I'll run ya down till ya beat."

Could just be on some 'playa' shit. I only defend it because, as you say, it's inconsistent with their vibe - they were just some like laidback teenage skater dudes.
