TS: Betty Everett's "You're No Good" vs. Harvey Averne's "You're No Good" vs. ESG's "You're No Good" vs. Terry Riley's "You're Nogood"

4 phenomenal tracks, all pretty classic as far as i can see.

Much as i like ESG "You're No Good" is not one of my favourite ESG tunes so i'd probably put that one at the bottom of the list followed by Terry Riley's spun out 20 minute 1968 (!) proto-remix of the Harvey averne track (also 1968): breathtaking as it is i'd say Averne's original probably just pips it for me, although the Riley variation is probably more "important".

that leaves the Betty Everett and the Averne at the top. The Betty E track is straight down the line classic soul; just gorgeous BUt i think the Averne track has it..... today at least.

hmmm...i suppose i dont expect much love for this thread. Any more "you're No Good"s that ARE good?

doesn't linda ronstadt do a cover of the terry riley?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe of the harvey averne that the riley track is based around. I saw a reformed wilson philips (!) do a cover of it on a celeb gossip show recently - just what we've all been waiting for, no?

I thought the Linda Ronstadt one was the Betty Everett one, (written by Clint Ballard Jr?). I'm confused - how many of these are the same song?

How about the Prodigy's "No Good"?

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

no, you're right. the betty everett was the cover of the terry riley. the esg is a cover of gene pitney's "last chance to turn around."

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

well i haven't heard the Linda Rondstadt one so that was just a guess.

none of these songs are the same except that the Terry Riley is a kind of early cut-up/ remix (that goes on for just over 20 minutes) of the Averne track that was originally part of "Poppy Nogood's all-night flight" (hence the slight change of title).

xpost

the ESG is a cover? i must get the original, ta.

Can't we throw in the KLF's 'Last Train To Transcentral' for kicks?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The betty everett was the cover of the terry riley.

no these are completely different tracks.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

When a flatmate at university first heard 'Last Train To Transcentral' he was in a club and when the "OK - everybody lay down on the floor and keep calm" sample came in he thought it was real and fell to the ground, only to look up a few seconds later to find everyone laughing and pointing at him.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, he didn't do that at all, but he told us he had and we all believed him. Oh, what larks.)

Sorry - my derailment of your thread ends here.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, That's SoGood.

im surprised it got any responses never mind a derailment - i'm chuffed!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

another derailment:

Terry Riley's "YouNGood" and "Meditation Music" are by far the most downloaded things from my shared folder beating all other items in said folder by around 4:1. i find this amazing.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm

the esg is a cover of gene pitney's "last chance to turn around."

are you taking the piss am!st? i just downloaded the gene pitney and it bears no relation to any of these tracks.

Stiff Kittens - You're No Good For Me

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't find it particularly surprising people are after your Terry Riley jed. It is

a) quite stunning and wins in this contest
b) a pain in the ass to get hold of

Much as I like ESG, Terry Riley wins just cos I love the vocals going out of sync, and also love playing his moog mentalism.

Van Halen, people. Van Halen.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 29 July 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the same song again, right?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 29 July 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Joy Division were never called Stiff Kittens, Sasha...the name was suggested and the band immediately turned it down, absolutely hating it.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 31 July 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone have an MP3 of the original version of the "You're No Good" Terry Riley mutates?

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Sunday, 1 August 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yep.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 1 August 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

you should be able to find it online fairly easily, no?
