The guitar solo on this song rules.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It took years of hearing this, or at least the classic first couple minutes, before I realized that there was a guitar solo at the end. That solo sounds really out of place to me now, but that's because I was so used to the initial hook on it's own.

Classic hook.

(Clem Burke vs Bruce Gary) vs ("Good Girls Don't" vs "Uncontrollable Urge") vs ("(She's So) Selfish vs. (You're So) Physical")

dave q, Thursday, 29 July 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

hah, I listened to Uncontrollable Urge five times yesterday... yep.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 29 July 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is the bane of my existence.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 29 July 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "Welfare Mothers" is a Devo parody (xpost Derrick)

dave q, Thursday, 29 July 2004 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and BC Lotto Corp. turned it into a lottery ad.

big big BIG big BIG, (big) big big BIG big BIG, (big) big big BIG big BIG, BIG big BIG BIG... etc.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 29 July 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for bringing that back into my consciousness, derrick

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 29 July 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, except when it's in a film with that bloke that can never quite grow a mustache.

mzui, Thursday, 29 July 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

so epic. amazing

Markusj (Mark Jasper), Thursday, 29 July 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

my bologna.. has a first name

reo, Thursday, 29 July 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I despised it then; it merely bores me now.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 29 July 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i love it

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Complete classic. Sorry, it's just a fact.

Rewritten by Killing Joke and re-titled "Tension," it became even finer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh I remember that one. B-side, wasn't it? Empire song?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Worst use of "My Sharona": Everlast's first record (pre-House of Pain) on "I Got the Knack"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The b-side to "Follow the Leaders" originally, if I'm not mistaken.

~Oh yeah. The two singles I bought at the time.

It was Brilliant, the other one, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe so....or was it "Chop Chop"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That was the single after "Follow the leader" i'm fairly certain...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

So so sick of this song = dud.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Jerry Casale is on record as saying that Devo's "Girl U Want" was a direct rip of "My Sharona".

TS: "My Sharona" v. "Girl U Want."

mike a, Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Great track, but the guitar solo middle-8 almost ruins it - it's a completely different song (and not in a good way)

Also, without this song, no "It's Tricky", no "No Good Advice" and no Nirvana: "We're basically Black Sabbath molesting The Knack" said Cobain - I think.

Wow...that's a thread all its own, Mike.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic and classic again for the legacy it's left.

doo-doo da-da doo da doo da doo-doo da bah-um-doo da-da doo da dan-da-dan-dan

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking classic pop song. I love the way he sings all sleazy and breathy in the verses.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I will go so far as to make the daring statement that if you hate this song, you hate fun.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

First song I ever learned on bass. And then distorted the bass to all hell and did a death metal cover with some friends. It was fun.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

we just had an acoustic guitar and an organ and we discovered the bass line was just note--> up one octave same note -> down again etc. and we liked "whats that running down your thigh SHARONA?!!!"

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"whats that running down your thigh SHARONA?!!!"

Err...isn't it feel a sense of victory runnin' up the length of my thigh, Sharona!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Total classic! Belongs in the Pantheon of great rock songs. True story;

The first time I heard the song was on the radio, whatever year it was (1978?) and the DJ flipped out and played it three times in a row, back to back to back. This was on some Hartford, CT station.

Davlo (Davlo), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Great song--great album. The solo is fine. Perhaps the person who didn't remember it having one heard the radio edit? (Well, I assume it's a radio edit--it's a jukebox 45 that I have).

I like the reference to it on the Nash Kato record (which was really good...)

John 2, Friday, 30 July 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it's a classic, kinda undeniable. But I'm sick of the fucking song.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hardly their best moment. "Good Girls Don't" was classy though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

sixteen years pass...

thread

Would you be willing to share with us how you/you guys came up with the first lead break changes in “My Sharona” @Averre13 ? It’s a wicked change/movement. Kind of Who-like, but more jangly. Just came up on my radio. Thanks
