now come on *how* classic?

piscesboy, Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely a 9/10 on the 1986 scale.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, not as good as "Let Me Love You Down" but decent.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Loved it when I was 12. Haven't heard it since.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

1986 was slim pickings ... the year of Starship and Mr. Mister.

Maddy's "Live To Tell" was pretty good.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My 1986 involved a lot of Genesis' Invisible Touch, Heart's self-titled record from the year before, and tapes I'd made from recording things off of Casey Kasem's American Top 40.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

uh,uh,uh...

absolute klassik

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

blatant rip off and water down of Prince's "Lady Cab Driver." While I can't deny its enjoyability, I refuse to call it classic.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a video of theirs off VH1 Classic about a Digital Woman. Great shitty computer graphics. Espionage. That's more classic in a sense.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

1986 also had another absoulte total fucking classic -- the Outfield's "Your Love". (Album released in 1985, single charted in 1986)

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Love the song ... great disposable candy. One problem: I just broke up with a woman named Sheila. So keep the audio file miles away from me for the time being. :-)

Chris O., Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

v. "She, Shelia" by The Producers

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh dear, sorry chris o!

yeah it's obviously a prince steal, and yeah i guess
it is pretty much like 'lady cab driver', but that was
always a weedy watered down sort of song
anyway so if anything it's an improvement.

beware the 6.00 + version on the mp3s.
its a crappy 80's extended-just-for-the-heck-of-it
twelve incher.

i like how he does a comedy cockernee voice at the start.

piscesboy, Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Other songs I always seem to link this with in my mind: "Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox, and by virtue of that, "Fly Girl" by the Boogie Boys. I think it's because I heard them all at the same friend's house.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, it's okay. I just wouldn't want the joyful turning into tears in beer. I've got Blood on the Tracks for that ...

Chris O., Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

prince violently fucks a girl while dedicating each stroke to a different person. WATERED DOWN???!!?!?!?!!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I spent my fair share of time with Blood on the Tracks back in April and May, so I can identify.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Best line from 'Oh, Sheila' is when the guy rhymes 'right' with 'right' and then 'be' with 'be'

also... 'i got to deedle deedle dee... deedle deedle doo'

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

and also that part at the beginning... 'what's good for the goose, is good for the gander" ... def klassik!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

cripes i really wasn't expecting people to be this aware of the track. was it a massive hit outside of the uk? it cant have even been top 10 over here i don't think.

piscesboy, Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and my favourite bit is the lurid
'uh uh uh' bit

piscesboy, Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Donut Bitch owns the single of this WITH AN A CAPELLA VERSION. I have repeatedly insisted on some sort of hypermashup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, i forgot about the fake cockey "Auu, Shy-la!" part at the start... man, this track's got so many brilliant facets to it

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the ultimate 'Prince (Not Prince)' track.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It absolutely is the ultimate in Prince (Not Prince). Guy even sounds like Prince ...

Chris O'Connor (Chris O'Connor), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and on most p2ps you'll find the track mislabeled as a Prince track. in fact, if you wanna seek it out, you'll get more hits with "prince" than "ready for the world". and yes, beware the ubiquitous shit extend-a-mixes

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Piscesboy - it was a #1 hit in the States.

Anthony - you're thinking of "Digital Display," which I love almost as much as "Oh Sheila": "I never had a girl before / WIth much of a fig-ure / So excuse me if I start to play / With your digital display." Prefiguring the virtual sex revolution!

All - Tommy Roe claims the chords are the same as in his own #1 hit "Sheila."

Also all - Was their faux-Brit accent at the beginning inspired by Rockwell?

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

They were trying to get back at Mick Jagger for "You Gotta Move."

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what would the other great prince (not prince) tracks be?

it's a thread of its own!

piscesboy, Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Could Prince protege groups be eligible for this category?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to remember, what's good for the goose, is always good for the gander--WTF?

frankie teardrop, Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a ton of Prince Not Prince tracks referenced in the book Possessed and Matos' Sign O' The Times book.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

prince not prince

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

most of those are just covers

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope. Read the thread.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I did. If you take away the covers and sorry-not-remotely shit like "Sussudio" there ain't much left. If I was at home I'd flip through Possessed and post some.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

This song was really a U.S. #1? I didn't know it was quite that big over here. I just remember the video being played on T.V. a lot.

Bimble (bimble), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, let's just all sing along...

Like they always say
What's good for the goose
Is always good for the gander
Oh, Sheila

Ugh
Ugh
Ugh

Oh, baby, love me right
Let me love you till we get it right, mmm
Can't you let the others be
'Cause with you is where I wanna be, yeah

Oh, sugar, where've you been
Hangin' out with your male friends
Listen, somebody's gonna hurt you
The way you love to keep hurtin' me, we'll see

Oh, oh, Sheila
Let me love you till the morning comes, just wanna say
Oh, oh, Sheila
You know I want to be the only one

Ugh, baby, understand
That I want to be the only man
But it seems as though it's gotten too hot
And I think I'll start to have my own fun

Oh, baby, it's plain to see
That I'm qualified to fulfill your needs
You think you'll put whatever on me
Well, honey, baby, just you wait and see, and we'll see

Oh, oh, Sheila
Let me love you till the morning comes, just wanna say
Oh, oh, Sheila
You know I want to be the only one for her

Ugh
Ugh
Ugh

Oh, baby, it's 1-2-3
Uh, I love you, baby, honestly
Uh, I want to deedle deedle dee
A deedle deedle doo, uh

Oh, oh, Sheila
Uh, uh, uh, uh, Sheila
Oh, oh, Sheila
Uh, uh, uh, uh, Sheila

Oh, baby, love me right
Let me love you till we get it right, mmm
Can't you let the others be
'Cause with you is where I got to be, yeah

Oh, baby, understand
That I want to be the only man, uh
You think you'll put whatever on me
Well, honey, baby, just you wait and see

Oh, oh, Sheila
Oh, Sheila

Oh, oh, Sheila
Let me love you till the morning comes (Oh, Sheila), just wanna say
Oh, oh, Sheila
You know I want to be the only one (Oh, Sheila)

Oh, oh, Sheila
Like they always say'like they always say'like they always say'
Like they always say'like they always say'like they always say'
Oh, Sheila' oh, Sheila' oh, Sheila' oh, Sheila' oh, Sheila' oh, Sheila'

Uh, uh, uh, uh, Sheila

Oh, baby, love me right
Let me love you till we get it right, mmm
Can't you let the others be
'Cause with you is where I got to be, yeah

Oh, baby, understand
That I want to be the only man, uh
You think you'll put whatever on me
Well, honey, baby, just you wait and see

Oh

Oh, oh, Sheila
Let me love you till the morning comes (Oh, Sheila), just wanna say
Oh, oh, Sheila
You know I want to be the only one (Oh, Sheila)

Oh, oh, Sheila
Let me love you till the morning comes (Oh, Sheila), just wanna say
Oh, oh, Sheila
You know I want to be the only one

Here we go
Oh

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ONE ONE ONE ONE TWO TWO TWO TWO THREE THREE THREE THREE FOUR FOUR FOUR FOUR
"Oh Sheila" is certainly the best sample of true Prince Not Prince. However, not nearly enough love is given to its followup, "Digital Display". That song is essentially a Prince-ified "Tour De France" and "The Telephone Call" by Kraftwerk, and isn't near the status of "Oh Sheila", but R&B pop groups in the 80s that try to make literal robotic sounds make me smile.

Bum Lik-King Fargit (bumlikkingfargit), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

DON'T BE GOOSED. THE GANDER WEARS NO CLOTHES
Sadly, these two songs are the only worthwhile songs they have done. I have listened to most of their other material -- or their first three albums, at least, and -- save the two aforementioned songs -- they are mostly comprised of sluggish, boring, and uninspired ballads.

Bum Lik-King Fargit (bumlikkingfargit), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCKING A. ALSO "YO! THATS A LOT OF BODY"

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 30 July 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 30 July 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Im sorry but "Let Me Love You Down" is a much better song.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)
