peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the shins cover is my favorite album cover of the year. the die-cutting has a lot to do with it, but i like pretty much everything about it.

that reiver's cover is actually pretty neat

thorJESUHOY (Thor), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

bah. i'll never learn to post images on this thing...

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Robert Palmer one is good in the context of "I am the Aphex Twin's dad" though. Most of these aren't that boring. There are 5 million more boring/generic covers out there. I can't post images either though, so I'll shut up.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beatles White Album. I mean, couldn't they throw on some news clippings or something? It's almost completely blank except for the band name. Boring.

That cover alone basically launched Factory's entire aesthetic.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I've got that Reivers album, but it's actually the Zeitgeist version. Change the bandname, keep the cover. Seems lazy if you ask me.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking Heads, '77.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

In all serious every Bruce Springsteen cover except for Greetings... and Nebraska is terrible. The Boss is a bit too enamored with his face (this is coming from a fan).

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

awww man - talking heads '77 is one of my alltime favorite album covers, especially on vinyl, where the red is just a little more fluorescent than on the cd. the colors just clash so beautifully and tensely.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, I ADORE the Wedding Present...but boy are their covers yawnsome.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

most of those don't bore me at all - the tortoise is really good and the cover of brotherhood is beautiful and sad-looking. especially when it doeant say BROTHERHOOD NEW ORDER on it (which it doesn't in reality). I think it's perfect, in fact.

The reivers cover floats my boat too.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the WP's bizarro cover, in either color scheme.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

...and the squarepusher cover is also good, anti design abut not anti-design in an overdesigned way (like raygun).

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread's so boring...

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc800/c848/c84815n2wp5.jpg

...I may as well be listening to Genesis.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Nearly crumbling with emotion to think that someone else out there besides me actually has that first (excellent) Zeitgeist LP...definitely a cherished antique in my collection.

Bimble (bimble), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Altho now that I think about it, the random colouring of certain words is worthy of a few seconds of thought. And I always it was kinda cute, putting the word 'Stereo' up there in the corner.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"...always thought it was kinda cute..."

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ANY cover with a sofa, a divan, a lounge, an armchair on it...i think there hundreds of covers like this...it was fashionable at some point.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Never seen that Built To Spill one before, Banana, and don't think it's boring at all! It has it's own charming gimmick to it - this is what saves PiL, too, you see.

Ride's Nowhere sleeve boring? No, just perfect, that's all. Would have been more boring if they'd put anything else on it, especially words.

I do find the Loveless cover boring, however. Would have been better if you couldn't tell it was a guitar.

Still, it's hardly as boring as this one:

sorry.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"In Through The Out Door" boring? You must be mad! Look at the texture of the paper, the sensuous brown color, those exciting and daring (yes daring) ripples, and of course, the jaunty, angled text box. This album cover is sheer panic on an adrenaline rush!

Davlo (Davlo), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(...'course the REAL reason for the paper bag was to conceal the ACTUAL cover, of which there were six. No doubt one of the six was extremely scarce.)

Pet Shop Boys "Actually" is the winner, obv.

This is also boring:

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

cardboard box! Record retailers sure hated it, tho.

I was all prepared to post that Dream Syndicate cover before noticing that I already did

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 11 September 2008 07:18 (seventeen years ago)

Winner is Actually, actually.

Lotsa covers here that I think are pretty interesting, but that's inevitable.

Which is preferable, a boring album cover or an ugly one?

This is one of my favourite albums ever, but I've always thought the cover is pretty boring, right down to the very generic font used on the title. Some later Curtis albums have much better covers.

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 September 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

What on earth?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 11 September 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

tv on the radio cover: ugh

lolita nation: totally acceptable, esp. since it's such a quality record

garbage stuff: not boring, per se, but more lazy, crappy nineties graphics that likely already dated themselves poorly at the time of the release

camera obscura: not boring. deer in the headlights expression is too alarming to be "boring"

curtis: tuomas, u r crazy

Zeno, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

For a band whose artwork gets jizzed over so much New Order have a lot of crappy sleeves in there too.

Geir OTM about Garbage, those are boring and bad.

I dunno if there is a generic/stereotypical post-rock sleeve but I think most of the old Kranky output and the card Constellation sleeves are well designed and not boring. Actually most of Labbradford's are pretty weak so scratch them but other than that

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

the weezer cover is so weird.

for starters, the one dude is appropriating the gram parsons-revival look that had already been done a decade previous by beachwood sparks, etc.

such a great record, such a boring an ugly cover

O hai, it's a lame snapshot of me practicing in my apartment. That's boring, but it's not ugly enough, so let's add this puke green circular frame.
