the other thread was getting too unweildy and with only a month left and my budget for buying records severely overextended, here is ver we make out lists.

(note: any "why should we rank things; lists are stupid" blah blah whingers will be immediately disqualified from the brotherhood of man.)

damnit, i knew! that would happen somewhere along the line.

jess, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

let's see if this fixes it.

jess, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jess -- are you confusing the Pixies' BBC disc with the B-sides comp?

Andy, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Way to go, kemosabe.

David Raposa, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, what the hell?

David Raposa, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

andy...perhaps. ah, shit...yeah i am. the bbc thing came out in 98.

oh lord, save us from these italics that the devil has loosed upon us, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Side question: Where do mixes fit in? I tend not to consider them as regular albums since they're not 'proper' records -- i.e. made/produced by the artist in question. For me, they fall in that "reissue/compilation/archival/etc." bunker.

Andy, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmm...i think comps. and mixes might need their own separate category. fer instance kompakt total 3 and superlongevity (no more italics for me) are certainly rekkids of the year, but i didn't wanna put em in the album category. maybe if it's material mixed or compiled that was released in that year? so andy weatherall's 9 o'clock drop would go in reissues, but hypercity would go in comps./mixes? (god, we are such nerds.)

jess, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm gonna continue to stick with the two category deal: 1) proper full-length recordings and 2) other.

I still have a bunch of records from this year to track down and several that I do have haven't been listened to enough.

Andy, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lists are fun...

1. All is Dream. Mercury Rev 2. We Love Life. Pulp 3. Since I Left You. The Avalanches 4. Is This It?. The Strokes 5. Endless Summer. Fennesz 6. Until Tomorrow. Manual 7. Change. Dismemberment Plan 8. Dilate. Bardo Pond 9. Rock Action. Mogwai 10. Dymaxion x 4 + 3 = 38:33. Dymaxion

I wasn't sure if 'Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today is OK' is 2000 or 2001, so I omitted it.

alex in montreal, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuck...i completely forgot about the rough trade 25th anniv. box. that's gotta go in reissues, etc. somewhere close to the top.

jess, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, it might change, and I've done one of these before (with one album now removed - Folktronic is good, but I don't think I've played it enough for it to truly merit a place in my year-end Top 10 and replaced by another I now think qualifies if you're taking UK release as a cut-off date) but:

2001 = personal music consumption, decreasing.

james, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm also going to buy Lateralus, because I really liked Tool's Opiate EP from way back.

james, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nuggets II. Maybe Shit Street by the Pagans if I'm feeling generous. Where these fit on the new/reissue side of things is yr call.

fritz, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And for my highly controversial choice of best single of 2001, I propose “The Music’s No Good Without You” by Cher.

Lazily written off as a Xerox of “Believe,” it is in fact the anti- “Believe.” Whereas the Vocoder was only used as punctuation on “B” to emphasise the fuck-you-Jack nature of the lyric, it is present and processed throughout this new song. Cher sounds neutralised, lamenting the loss of an unbeatable dancefloor partner. No evidence of their having associated beyond the dancefloor, but she continues dancing without him anyway, void. The subtext of loss, of course, goes farther for me. I don’t wish to propose that every love lost song is necessarily underlined with preconceptions of mortality; but this performance has a deep hole where a heart should be. Her closing monologue “I must try to carry on” etc., is rendered expressionlessly, replicant-like, all life having been drained, just the veneer remaining.

I could even go further and say that this record may even stand within touching distance of Dollar’s “Videotheque” (the most chilling moment in pop EVER – Bazar’s closing “Only ghosts are lovers on the screen” descending in line with the Fairlight, human and machine morphing into one).

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I never make best of the year lists until after Christmas. I confidently predict you'll all be wrong, 'though.

Jeff W, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was planning to do an ILM poll at the end of the year but since we've had two threads on it already it seems a bit pointless.

Tom, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Noooo. We want polls. Much better than k-pointless list making. Which won't stop me making my list - in 5 weeks time.

Jeff, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Am I the first person to pick 'Survivor'? Did it come out in 2000 or something? It's utterly transfixiating!

dave q, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As for albums, Gillian Welch's astonishing "Time (The Revelator)" towers over everything else released this year. Major thread about this masterpiece currently in preparation.

so my question is: is the timbaland and magoo album out anywhere yet? i thought it wasn't, but my flatmate bought a vinyl copy on import the other day (in hmv, i think). that's got to be a contender; people like myself and i'm the music are two of the best tracks i've heard this year, and i suspect that's only scratching the surface...

Yeah, it's out already, though only at hideous import prices here in Australia. I've liked a lot of what i've heard (esp. "Drop", "Roll Out", "All Y'all" and "Indian Carpet") but I don't know if an album of solid Magoo will be easy to stomach. "People Like Myself" is cool, but get rid of that damned chorus!

What the hell is 'controversial' about m. carlin (or anyone) nominating a Cher single as the year's best? This isn't the Melody Maker aka Ironic Review circa 1988. You either like it or you don't, adn if you work near a radio you probably won't by now. Then again your parody of the worst writing on this site is pretty amusing, so hats off to ya.

You responding to the bait is what makes it controversial.

In what way is putting up a list with 17 days left to go "less than timely"? ;)

Tom, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did anyone else read this thread and forget about posting on it and then halfway through reading your own list you're like "wow that's totally right, who is this guy".
