Rolling 2004 Europop Thread

I pretty much know who's going to be posting to this thread before I start it, but I shall go ahead anyway.

So... it seems to have been quite a good year on the continent so far. I've finally "got" "Modern Times" by J Five... are they really French? That guy has a pretty impeccable US rapper circa 1997 accent. Plus he looks like the best friend from Boy Meets World.

Also: "Voce Me Aparaceu" by Kaleidoscopio is rapidly gaining as my favourite single of the year so far. It's just... wrong. It is the most out-of-date single I've heard, the band look out of date, the video makes me think I've slipped back into being 14 again... but it's just the best slice of Afro-pop I've ever for aeons.

What else is good in the EU at the moment, anyway?

Dom: The rapper on "Modern Times" is a US Rapper called Johnny Five, but the track is, I'm fairly sure, French-created. It doesn't appear on Johnny's album, anyway.

I am on the fence about Kaleidoscopo song. On one hand, I think the intro is awful, but when it gets going it's quite smoove.

The most searched-for Europop single that leads people to my blog is "Femme Like U" by K-Maro, a fantastic French single that should be translated and covered quickly.

Irrespective of whether I have blabbed about them elsewhere or not, here are some others:

Farolfi vs Gambafreaks - Subtravel
Magnifica and Turbolenza - Hir Ai Kam Hir Ai Go
Antti Tiusku - Yrita Ymmartaa
Drengene fra Angora - Team Easy On
Outlandish - Man Binder Os Pa Mun
Stefan Raab Feat. Spucky, Kork & Schrotty - Space-Taxi
Vesna Pisavoric - Ti Si Kriv
Lena Philipsson - Delirium
Tess - The Second You Sleep
Jacques Houdek - Neka Bude Zauvijek
Novaspace - So Lonely

And here's a non-definitive list of singles not released in the US or UK that are on my Singles of the Year list:

Loto - Back To Discos
David Bisbal - Buleria

I found Gabry Ponte's version of "In The Shadows" a bit of a letdown. But it's better than the Meadows remix that came with the Finnish version of the album.

""Femme Like U" by K-Maro, a fantastic French single"

He's actually from Quebec.

Etienne Menu (Etienne), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's at least IN French, isn't it? Has he done anything else?

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 30 July 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and for a real trainwreck:

Mixtery - Bring Me To Life

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

O-Zone, "Dragostea din Tei". The inferior cover by Haiducii has been in the charts at the same time.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually prefer that disco follow-up O-Zone have.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Chewing Gum by Annie can be (slightly tenuously) mentioned again here also because it is maybe genuinely the greatest record of all time (NOT A DRILL)

one month passes...
I've been eyeing this record by a girl duo called So Watt! for the longest time, cuz it's in every record shop here but never cheap, anyway, finally gave in and bought it.

Apparently they're portuguese, which surprised me because they don't have any sort of hit single or the slightest bit of media attention or anything here.

Sample titles: "My Reflexion", "Funcy Flame", "I Already Know That!" and my personal favourite, "Hey! Respect My Mind".

The cover features the two girls laying about. The dark skinned one is wearing a black t-shirt which has the words "White Power" on it. This puzzles me.

no mention of The Knife 'Heartbeats' yet then - the album's great too

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably because we all knew Heartbeats last year :) Great to have it cross over though.

Anyone interested on being on a Square Table-like Europop panel, email me! You'll get sent lots of Europop you've never heard of and have a chance to be bitchy.

e-type - paradise

take the best of the a teens, mix it with the flying trance attack of kate ryan's "libertine" and voila!

randy mamola, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see O-zone's follow-up single "Despre tine" here yet. Not as great as "dragostea din tei", but still very cheesy and amusing ;-)

Oh, and Edward, that panel sounds interesting!
