Best Super Band

I'm trying to decide.

1) The Supremes (1961-1970). The best singles, for sure, but did they ever put together a solid album? No, they didn't.
2) Supertramp (1969-?). The boy band to the Supremes girl band. Some of their music, early on especially, is unlistenable, but then comes Breakfast in America, and "The Logical Song" (1979), which is a better argument against capitalist fascism than anything on God Saves the Queen.
3) Superchunk (1989-?). Slack motherfuckers/indie label svengalis. They're still plugging away, maybe not getting better, but they kept the good fight up at least through Here's Where the Strings Comes In. Do they have a song as good as "The Logical Song," though?
4) Super Furry Animals (1993-?). Live they're incredible, but their best album's sung in Welsh. Who can relate to that? And what's more indispensable in this crazy world--Fuzzy Logic (all of it) or "The Logical Song"?
5) Supergrass (1993-?). They're my pick, maybe because they're the most consistent, maybe because Life on Other Planets was so unexpectedly great there's hope they'll top "The Logical Song" before they're done.

Supersuckers

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Supergrass won't ever top 'The Logical Song' by Scooter.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Some good points, well made steve. But come on, Fuzzy Logic is the greatest thing ever with no exceptions.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

How could I forget the Supersuckers? Fuck me in the ass. I don't agree that Fuzzy Logic is their best album, at least it's not the one I listen to most. That's MWWNG. That's their one aberration, otherwise I'd say they're getting better with each album, with Phantom Power being my second favorite. Anyways, they're so good live, I think they're studio underachievers. All in all, even including the Supersuckers, my vote goes to Supergrass.

steve hise, Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Superdrag!

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear beat me to the Supersuckers....but they've started to indeed supersuck in the last few years, so maybe not them, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Superconductor! Carl Newman's supergroup of 7 guitar players in pure noise fuzz pop bliss.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Superstar! Random late-nineties indie band that sounded quite like the Beatles, had two singles, and then disappeared off the face of the earth as if had never existed.

cis (cis), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote for Superchunk. Their last album was one of their best, they've evolved quite a bit and too many Supremes songs sound the same to me.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I refuse to use "The Logical Song" as the benchmark for comparison ... none of these bands have made a single that is one-billionth as fantastic as SFA's "Juxtapozed With U", arguably the best single of the past five years (wait is that song nominated on the other thread ... )

Anyway, SFA are my pick.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they have a song as good as "The Logical Song," though?

Several. "Package Thief" and "The First Part" to start with.

phil dennison, Friday, 30 July 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Supremes! I've been listening to the singles a lot today, actually. Big points go to:
'When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes'
'I Want A Guy'
'Nothing but Heartaches'
'I Hear a Symphony'
'Come See About me'
'My World Is Empty Without You'
'Can't Hurry Love'
'You Keep Me Hangin' On'(if just for the guitar line)

plus the hilarious craziness of 'Buttered Popcorn'

derrick (derrick), Friday, 30 July 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Supersnazz!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 July 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

superstar has been around since forever and have like three or four albums. joe mcalinden's best days were spent in the groovy little numbers.

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Friday, 30 July 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Supergrass and SFA are both perennial favories of mine, but SFA, for sheer volume of amazing material, are clearly superior.

Simon H., Friday, 30 July 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Supremes and it isn't even close.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 July 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I'd take the Diana Ross-less Supremes over any of these acts (Supergrass haha.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 July 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Super Session: 1968, Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, Stephen Stills contains the definitive version of Donovan's Season of the Witch.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 30 July 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This is fun. Um, not Superjesus from here in Australia. Quite bad really.

My vote goes to Superchunk, one of my fave live shows ever. Supergrass can be really amazing or really irritatingly plain for me. And SFA I am still woefully under-educated in.

piers, Friday, 30 July 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Supersilent?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

wrong answer Roxy! the correct answer of course is DAMN YANKEES

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 30 July 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Supersilent 6 should be a choice, but 1-5 aren't all that.

steve hise, Friday, 30 July 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

another vote for Superdrag. i love em. lots. but i realise that proper answer is probably SFA.
