I’m kind of surprised any college students are at a Devendra show.

two friends of mine saw him a week or two back and were horrified at how bad it was, they had not been keeping up

That's really weird, since I think his new record is actually the best thing he's done in years. Felt like it actually shifted away from that whole sad-sack thing in a way he hasn't since, I don't know, Cripple Crow. Guess he prefers that mode live these days.

he is mostly terrible but he is so beautiful
― marcos, Thursday, 31 October 2019 14:55 (six years ago)
I've only checked in on him intermittently since the mid 00s, and I'm always surprised by whatever he's doing at that point, but this new one is quite nice. Apparently the new album is a collaboration with Cate Le Bon, so I'm already sold.

This has sent me back to Rejoicing On The Hands for the first time since the CD era. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I am.
But man, I miss this era of music, kind of ruined by an increasingly dull parade of successors: Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, and I guess logically ending with stuff like Mumford & Sons. It's easy to forget how interesting and creative a lot of the earlier 2000s freak-folk stuff could be

You're probably right, though I guess I've always blamed that stuff more on the Death Cab/Rilo Kiley end of the scene. But tbh I blame every last thing I don't like on that end of the scene.
