Rock and jazz stars are to be embraced by the urban music scene through new awards at an urban music ceremony.

As usual the comments below are interesting.

"White guitar bands should not be allowed to be included in the Urban Music Awards. Do you ever see any 'urban' kids listening to that stuff? No!

Should rock bands be nominated in 'Urban' Music Awards or should there only be general music awards like the grammys?

Rambo, Friday, 30 July 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if white rock stars will feel like the urban awards are being patronizing?

There was that crappy reggae Police one a few years ago.

Those comments on the BBC site are quite funny. Apparently The Clash are 'urban'.
These terms like 'urban' just plain confuse me.

Bryter Layter is my favorite urban album of all time

usually (at least in america) "urban" is synonymous with "black"

'Urban means from the inner city. Surely bands like The Jam, The Sex Pistols and The Specials originated this in England. Should they be getting lifetime achievement awards at this type of awards ceremony. The awards should now be recognising bands like the Libertines, The Ordinary Boys and The Coral.
Mark, Cambridge'

i dont see any problem with jazz being included. thats a good thing, actually. although why jamie cullum is in the running for that since hes hardly identified with anything remotely urban, i dont know. amy winehouse should be in that category, i suppose.

as for rock, unless theyre nominating, say, NERD or someone, thats a completely perplexing, unnecessary inclusion.

reading the quotes from so-called 'urban' mag editors, i wonder if they know what on earth they're talking about.

i also wonder who will be in the best rock nominations!

There was that crappy reggae Police one a few years ago.

that was actually The Police in a nutshell, no?

Maybe the urban music awards are trying to steal NME readers?

Rambo, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

to trick them into liking ms dynamite?

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a new British rock band with a black singer. completely irrelevant detail other than that i wonder if this means they will be nominated for Best Rock at whatever this lame Urban awards thing is. How sad.
