I have it and I like it. Better than Mule Variatons, IMO (but I wasn't as crazy about that one as everyone else). Also a departure as far as sound. Mostly just guitar/bass/drums, he goes easy on the unusual instruments. It's the noisiest and harshest thing he's done in a while. On quite a few songs he uses his voice as a percussion instrument, repeating these scat phrases (they sound looped but aren't.) Still absorbing it but it's good.

Since Bone Machine? How are the ballads?

Also - AKM and I are going to see The Black Rider. has anyone else seen it and liked it that can stoke our anticipation?

There's only one ballad in the usual Waits sense, really, and it's great. It's a solider's letter home kind of thing, and it's obviously about the situation now. In some ways it's noisier than Bone Machine, in that he pushes his voice even harder.

Fucking fantastic.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

How's "Sins of the Father"?

Also are we talking a Mule Variations-style epic record or a more LP-length Blood Money-esque record?

Simon H., Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have an early copy of this...? It's a long album, 15 songs, with some tracks around 6 minutes. Too long, really.

Good turntable bits in the vein of "Eyeball Kid". Waits's son is on the decks. "Sins of the Father" is slower, sort of "Get Behind the Mule"-ish.

Yeah, like THREE MONTHS EARLY.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What's it called? I must know for purposes that have absolutely nothing to do with slsk.
