Anything on any song Glenn Frey released solo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone should do a megamix of just those sax parts.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Turn the Page"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

none of you guys know anything about music.

Justin Leach, Sunday, 1 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe me, I can appreciate a good saxophone solo. I just hate Bob Seger.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 1 August 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Anything on any song Glenn Frey released solo.
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), August 1st, 2004.

That hurts Ned, that hurts.

I grew up listening to the Beverly Hills Cop Soundtrack. "The Heat is On" DEFINED MY CHILDHOOD.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 1 August 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So actually, OTM.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 1 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ho hum, more uninformed anti-Segerism. I'm as tired of reading it as I am of defending him, so I'm just gonna ignore it, after admitting that his music did indeed begin to deteriorate when he began to add sax...after nearly 10 years, several great LPs and about a dozen monster singles.

Worst sax part? How 'bout the Beach Boys' "Shut Down?" Completely dunderheaded and purposeless, but at least it only lasts as long as the guitar solo. And I believe the entire song is less than 100 seconds long anyway.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 2 August 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

John Coltrane "Naima"

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Mercury Rev, Hudson Line. Makes me sick.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenny G's career.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pink Cadillac." What the hell was Clemons thinking?

phil d., Monday, 2 August 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

easy one. David Bowie's alto solo on Steeleye Span's "To Know Him is to Love Him."

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I always liked his tone a fair bit myself

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And come on I used the word "TONE" I know my shit obv

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cure - "A Night Like This"

honestly, it's horrible, the live saxless version is a MILLION times better.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Clarence Clemons -- choose any one cause they're all the fucking same.

buglove skistarr, Monday, 2 August 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Fear - "New York's Alright (If You Like Saxophones)"

Joseph Pot (STINKORâ„¢), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Milli Vanilli - the slow ballad one that title slips my mind...

Madly out of tune and fades as soon as they can get away with it...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

INXS, "never tear us apart." I would probably love this song if the saxaphone were gone

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Cave having a blow on "Yard" off Prayers On Fire by the Birthday Party.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually!!!! I seem to remember there was a time in the mid-80s when there was a sazophone solo on everything!!!! In fact, there was some discussion on this by some young folk on one of those "Young People Talk Rubbish About This Week's New 45s!!!!" type spots on Tony Blackburn (Back when he was on Radio 1 in the 80s!!!!), and then one of blokes wades in with some really badly timed "joke" about a lack of "sax appeal"!!!!! Anyway, when did the blandification of tha sax start!?!?!? I seem to remember saxophones from the late 70s and early 80s (Especially the likes of Maddness, 2-Tone, etc.) sounding jolly spooky in comparision!!!!!

Anyway, to answer the question- the Whitney versh of "I Will Always Love You"!!!!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"sazophone" = really really boring superfluous saxophone!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"When did the blandification of the sax start?"

In pop, probably with "Careless Whisper."

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Baker Street. And maybe there are those who like it, and to them I say: try spending time in your father's car when all the radio he'll listen to is Magic.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Whitney Houston 'I Will Always Love You'

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my favourite sax scene remains 'I Can't Go For That'

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Listen, I had to learn the fucking sax solo on "Baker Street" when I was a lad!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Baker Street" is the one. Blandification starts here!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Careless Whisper. Clench those fists in angst, George!

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

oh come on, the "Baker Street" sax is awesome!

my vote would probably have to go to one of UB40's early tunes. Some bloody dire sax playing on those first coupla LPs. I still have a soft spot for the records, mind.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Turn the Page" seconded WITH A VENGEANCE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I like Careless Whisper... What's so bad about that? Great tune.

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate every fucking sax solo on every fucking Saturday Night Live

also: John Coltrane "Naima"
-- Andrew Blood Thames (andrew.thame...), August 2nd, 2004.

i keel you!

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

'Baker Street' redeems the saxaphone, fools! I love a saxaphone hook, rather than a solo; utterly classic.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

When I saw this thread title I thought "The Heat Is On".

TS: Clarence Clemons vs. Lisa Simpson

wetmink (wetmink), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Saxophones are the only good thing about rock music.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 August 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Dire Straits - "Your Latest Trick"
Dire Straits - "Twisting by the Pool"

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I mean "Two Young Lovers" not "Twisting by he Pool"

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

But what about "The One That You Love"? That's a fun one. Drink a scotch by yourself in a hotel bar and wait for that one to roll around on the satellite background music system. You'll see.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ROB LOWE'S SOLO AT THE NIGHTCLUB IN ST. ELMO'S FIRE!!!!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Worst sax. Best Lyrics.

"Guilty feet have got no rhythm".

There's no comfort, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Technically speaking, Faust - It's a rainy day, sunshine girl

I know nothing about saxophone and can tell the player has no ability whatsoever...
...but I still enjoy it.

is that Tina Turner's sax warrior?

sexyDancer, Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that my friend is from The Lost Boys

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

bowie on the "heroes" album.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

>Someone should do a megamix of just those sax parts.

Somebody should transcribe all of Lisa Simpson's sax breaks and line them up into one long solo.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

'Your Love is King' - Sade

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Who sang "You Belong to the City"--was that Frey.

Morphine (the band, not the drug) redeemed the sax for me.

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I did a little check on our Lost Boy and he is, in fact, the same Gary Barnacle who appears in all those mad maxy Tina Turner videos. Whatta maniac!

sexyDancer, Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

way xpost:
jaxon, funny you should mention dat,
there's a certain kind of crap saxophone that used to crop up in in crap pop tunes a lot that i always thought of as SNL sax. crap.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

funny, I use the SNL sax descripto as well, esp for late mid period Lou Reed. Who's that guy?

sexyDancer, Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

David Sanborn to thread.

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Lenny Pickett joined SNL as tenor sax soloist on the 1985 season premiere and has played on every single show since, perhaps the longest streak of consecutive appearances by a SNL Band member. Lenny was perhaps best known in his pre-SNL life as a member of the fabled Tower Of Power horn section. His incredible sax improvisations and remarkable, almost unbelieveable upper register work have become the trademark of the SNL Band sound. Lenny was promoted to Musical Director in 1995, replacing G.E. Smith, and has also subbed for Leon Pendarvis as conductor. Upon the retirement of Cheryl Hardwick after the 1999-2000 season, Lenny Pickett became SNL's sole Musical Director and the band's frontman.
Lenny first appeared on Saturday Night Live on February 16, 1985, playing sax with Power Station on the tune "Some Like It Hot".

sexyDancer, Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We can credit Marty Fogel with Lou Reed more excessive moments.

saxyDancer, Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

bowie on the "heroes" album.

I love Bowie's sax on the "Heroes" album. No idea if it took any sax playing technical skill whatsoever, but still...

wetmink (wetmink), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

another vote for "Turn The Page"

That was kinda nice when he hit the flatted fifth there in the melody at :21, and his feel wasn't all that bad. But it goes pretty far south starting at halfway through.*

*I'm being generous.

Bay-L.A. Bar Talk (Hurting 2), Saturday, 14 November 2009 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

oh man 0:53-1:00 is the funniest thing ever. notice the bassist laughing, and also how few people applaud compared to the first time.

samosa gibreel, Saturday, 14 November 2009 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

Man, hatred for baker street though - understandable I guess, but that's one of my FAVORITE rock sax parts. It's just so balls-to-the-wall, lets-not-even-apologize-for-sax sax, and the sax chorus just dwarfs the verse.

Bay-L.A. Bar Talk (Hurting 2), Saturday, 14 November 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

we must lose that sax solo, Dougal

the juddering triumph of camembert (acoleuthic), Monday, 16 November 2009 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

that sax line is like a skewer through my skull.

m the g, Monday, 16 November 2009 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

Sounds like he's got a budgie stuck up his horn.
