"Move On Up" by Curtis. Probably mainly cos I'm listening to it now.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 1 August 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Jackson's Thriller has a good one going on in the background. So when I saw him play in 1998 or 97 he didn't even have a horn section in his band, I was all the more disappointed.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 1 August 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

teardrop explodes - reward

mig (mig), Sunday, 1 August 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really care for it, but Unwind Yourself/900 Number needs to be mentioned.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 1 August 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ah cmon, its got to be the breakdown section of 'jungle boogie'...BRWRWRWRWRWRR!

zappi (joni), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It saddens me to say it, but the horn riff in Sheena Easton's "Strut" is the best thing about the song.

The saxophones in "Savoy Truffle" off the Beatles' White Album is excellent as well. In They Might Be Giants' cover of the song for the Material World compilation after Harrison's death, that and the melody were the only bits they kept.

phil dennison, Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Zappa had some amazing horn riffs; right now I'm thinking 'I'm the Slime' and 'Peaches En Regalia'.

Also, reggae; 'Ali Baba' by John Holt, 'Government Land' by Horrace Andy, 'A Message To You'...

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll never forget the 70's closing music from Sesame Street with that wonderful BAH-da duh-DAA! (as well as bells and wah-wah guitars) Incidentally, I've been looking for a clip of it for ages, as I haven't heard it since I was a kid.

Frank Zappa - Zomby Woof (live version on "The Best Band...")

Simon H., Monday, 2 August 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ali Baba" (or any of the million Tubby "Barber" mixes) is definitely tops, also Egyptian Empire's awesome "Horn Track" and whatever is sampled on Public Enemy's "Show Em What'chya Got".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever's sampled on th Wu-Tang's "Uzi"'s pretty great too

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure that is a Al Green song from Love and Happiness, Andrew, but I can't remember which one.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the most has to be the bridge towards the end on Dexys' Geno.

Alex I really really need to get that, I think.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconding (or thirding) the vote for "Move On Up."

Honorable mentions to Chase, "Get It On" and pretty much everything the Grass Roots did from "Midnight Confessions" on.

And a GREAT horn riff on an otherwise awful song is "Keep the Ball Rolling" by Jay & the Techniques. Someone should really give that trumpet bray the treatment Beyonce gave the riff from the Chi-Lites' "Are You My Woman."

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 2 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"SpottieOttieDopalicious" by OutKast has a brilliant riff. Does anyone know if it's original or sampled? Always hard to tell with them.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

'Geno' by Dexy's Midnight Runners, if that counts...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hold on I'm Coming" should win by a mile.

Not That Chuck, Monday, 2 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Another Maceo nominee: "Across the Tracks" - Maceo & the Macks

briania (briania), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Fela - Zombie

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

most inescapable horn riff ever:
beyonce & jay-z: 'crazy in love'

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

that would be "Are You My Woman" by the Chi-Lites, Jay..

I agree with Wooden.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Always a smart move.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, well, i knew that, but i think it's fair to say that the riff didn't get annoying until it resurfaced in mrs. knowles' incarnation.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Best trumpets: "The Horse," baby! Used to rock this one in school band.

briania (briania), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Other favorites:

Marmalade, "Lovin' Things" (soon after replicated by the Grass Roots)

Can't believe I forgot "The Horse." Stunner, that one.

Lighthouse, "One Fine Morning" - amazing all around

Sly & the Family Stone, "I Want to Take Your Higher" and "If You Want Me to Stay" (people never notice the latter because of that great bassline, but the horn chart is killer, especially considering they didn't give a shit by then)

American Breed, "Bend Me, Shape Me"

Earth, Wind & Fire, "Serpentine Fire"

and a guilty pleasure: Genesis, "No Reply at All" (f/ the EWF horns)

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 2 August 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"SpottieOttieDopalicious" by OutKast has a brilliant riff. Does anyone know if it's original or sampled?

The liner notes have credits for horn players (as well as drums, bass, etc), so I'm guessing the whole song is more or less played live.

oops (Oops), Monday, 2 August 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nick The Stripper" was the first song that came to mind...

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 2 August 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kind of stuck on that P-Furs Pretty in Pink one.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 2 August 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)
