Pre-Cocteau Twins Songs That Kinda Sound Like The Cocteau Twins

It could be the atmosphere, vocals, guitars, drums, production, whatever.

My picks:

Olivia Newton-John - "Love Song"
Liz Damon's Orient Express - "1900 Yesterday"

Hm! There's actual an Amon Düül II song that made me think of the Cocteaus, hold on..."Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge," I think?

*listens*

Towards the end, if anything, thanks to all the e-bow work, it turns into this beautiful texturing in the background, then an orchestral whoosh. Not a direct link but I think there's something just enough there in the atmosphere.

Simon Raymonde's pre-Cocteaus band Drowning Craze had a song called "Storage Case" that somehow manages to survive a pretty bad female singer due to his trademark bass guitar playing. The rest of the band are all in the boat, but Raymonde's doing most of the rowing.

What about the end loop in I Want You She's so Heavy (Beatles); esp. the jangle arpeggio.

Kate Bush - 'Army Dreamers'

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Voices, Pure, Pull To Bits, quite a bit of Join Hands (can't remember specific tracks)....

"Love (Can Make You Happy)" - Jack Sigler & Mercy

Before I ever really heard the Cocteau Twins I imagined them sounding a bit like "Sara" by Fleetwood Mac, and now that I am a Cocteaus fan I still find it hard to separate the two. Just maybe I was confusing the term 'ethereal' with 'the Cocteau Twins', but I don't think my initial suspicions were that crazy.

Dollar - the part of "Love's Got A Hold On Me" that goes "...don't say you love me if you don't care ..."
and most of "Pink And Blue" (even the name...)

Pretty obscure, but:

Cos - "Viva Boma" (70s Belgian band whose lead singer also did the phonemic scat thing)

Robert Wyatt - "A Last Straw"

one of my fave musics ever - was just thinking about it and how it's often the least mentioned track on Rock Bottom (for me it's the core), then I realised it was a good candidate for this thread.

when i first heard the cocteaus i thought of Desert Kisses by the Banshees

dr x o'skeleton, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

10cc - "I'm Not In Love"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

Korgis - "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

this is not pre-Cocteau Twins, but fans of Head Over Heels probably noticed how some of the track sequencing maps nicely onto Siouxsie And The Banshees' A Kiss In The Dreamhouse, e.g. "She's A Carnival" = "In Our Angelhood" -and- "Cocoon" = "Multifoiled".
but no one's about to fault Cocteau Twins for loving what is many fans' fave Siouxsie And The Banshees album (mine too!). anyway, "My Love Paramour" is my fave song on either.

"Love (Can Make You Happy)" still does the trick though!

The Rolling Stones' "Heaven" gives me a Twins vibe. (Play this song for someone who's never heard it and dare them to name the band. Fun!)

I can't figure out which Cocteau Twins song the chorus reminds me of -- something off Head Over Heels, maybe? It isn't exactly pre-Cocteau (it came out at about the same time as Garlands, I think) but I feel like posting it just the same.

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Voices, Pure, Pull To Bits, quite a bit of Join Hands (can't remember specific tracks)....

I am imagining the Cocteaus as filtered through "Icon" and... man that would have been awesome

The Siouxsie song that the cocteaus always reminded me of was Desert Kisses from Kaleidoscope

any number of Ennio Morricone tunes, for example "Un Altro Mare" from 1969's Vergogna Schifosi (specifically harmonically and the 6/8 thing):

there's a remarkable conicidence (or not?) that the scat (la la-la la-la) closing of Scott Walker - "The World's Strongo Hulkington" sounds so similar to Liz's vocals in part of "Lorelei". after all, Simon Raymonde's dad produced Scott, Treasure was Simon's first album with the band, and Scott IV is his fave Walker album.
theory? that was a popular listen for the band around the writing/recording of Treasure.

Anne Joyal - "Eveil" (1976)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmxGNZ3MBh8

now which Cocteau Twins song does this song resemble (particularly the climbing vocal melody at 0:32?)? it's bugging me.

Olivia Newton-John is an interesting comparison. She has such a weird voice, in a good way.

hmm, I thought it might be something off Victorialand, but that's not it. I could've sworn there was a Cocteau Twins song with almost the exact same melody as that Anne Joyal song, but maybe I'm imagining it.

barman's bar mitz (unregistered), Thursday, 7 June 2012 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

I trawled through a bunch of Cocteau Twins songs, but nothing rang a bell. I guess it reminded me so much of the Victorialand vibe, it started to seem like an actual Cocteau Twins song. most of Anne Joyal's other songs are lame adult contemporary ish.
