How to describe it? I'm tempted to call it "micro-garage", the "garage" referring not to 2-step or grime but the early Strictly Rhythm/Nu Groove sound. Perhaps Strictly Rhythm more - it's got the sleek'n'slick, gratuitously voluptuous and captivating feel of tracks like "Luv Dancin", "Generate Power", "The Warning" etc only with more up-to-date swirly and micro-percussive production. Except that, owing to a strong electro influence, it's also very big-sounding and energetic, so maybe macro-garage?
Essentially: divas, big electro-tinged basslines, gorgeously programmed shuffling snare rhythms, like Herbert at his most dancefloor friendly. Towards the end it veers closer to proper electro-house (like a more subtle version of the transition on the first disc of Le Future Le Funk) but after the divatronics of the first two thirds it works magically, a really anthemic finish.
The tracklisting is dominated by tracks and remixes from Mei Lwun and Andy Caldwell (who is really well known among house circles but whose stuff has never grabbed me until now) but there's also a fantastic rocked-up mix of Scissor Sisters' "Comfortably Numb" towards the end which is by far the best version of the song I've heard.
Is there any other stuff in this vein (by Caldwell etc.) that I should be aware of?

That would be interesting to hear, since the regular mix left me shrugging a bit.

this: discofied but incredibly quirky and constantly surprising, with lots of chunky swinging beats that verged on breakbeats they were so stompingly syncopated ...sounds like the best thing ever. Disco-Zinc?
Also, I listened to 'Lost On Arrival' again and it's nowhere near as good.

I guess the analogy is speed garage where you had some tracks which were basically only slightly faster, tougher versions of the NY hits, and then you had the hypnotic ruff complexity of all the proto-2-step stuff. Although for me something like "Pushin (Andy's Dub Perspective)" is comparable to full-fledged 2-step glory days stuff, such is the fractured swinging brilliance of its groove.

I think this comp would appeal to anyone who likes vocal 2-step. "Pushin" especially reminds me of early Dubaholics or something.

"revolutions in sound" is a san francisco trippy psychedelic deep mix but with a heavy underground disco vibe. instead of prog-house reese octave bass you get sampled basslines from groups like ESG, liquid liquid, cymande, etc so there's that chicken lips thing happening. there's not really any overt electrohouse moves but, being as it's a west coast house album, it's got enough micro-production to keep me happy.

In some ways me loving the first half of this was a precursor to me loving UK Funky. I sort of feel like it's this side of "funky house" (as well as the obvious - dennis ferrer etc.) that really inspired uk funky producers.
