Those alarmingly hip Colette compilations

Are these worth picking up? No. 6 is out at www.colette.fr and costs a fortune and doesn't actually look as good as the 2002 one No.4, which if I'd had then would have impressed me loads, judging by the tracklist, but it's all a bit late now.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the ann steel track on #4 is really good. the tracklisting for these seem to veer between some great stuff, and sort of tiredy gonzalez/fischerspooner/addntox type things

― charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I downlaoded that Ann Steel track on your recommendation. It's great, yeah. I've been trying to find information on it on the web, but it all seems to be in Italian, Colette No. 4 references aside. I think it's saying it's from 1979's Ann Steel Album.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i think part of the confusion is that the 1979 lp was "the ann steel album", but is actually by roberto cacciapaglia

― charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www6.plala.or.jp/rim-mei/m/dgcaccia.htm#STEEL

there was talk of a reissue earlier this year, on an italian label, im not sure if it surfaced or not

― charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

So does she only sing on that one track?

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw a pic of the sleeve once, somewhere, (i just looked on ebay, but, no dice), my impression is that its a elviscostello/wendyjames type affair, with him making an album 'for her', she might have been a model or something? i'm not entirely sure

― charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah - the pic is here, along with the story, but my Italian's not up to much.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Although this is easy enough to get the gist of:

"The Ann Steel Album", che era uscito in Italia nel 1979 con il nome "Ann Steel", contiene 10 tracce: le musiche sono di Roberto Cacciapaglia, i testi di Giada Manca di Villahermosa, e la voce è di Ann Steel. Nel libretto del cd ci sono una serie di servizi fotografici inediti che ritraggono la bella modella-cantante.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the mix that james murphy did for them (#5) should be on slsk. look for it.

― lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I paid slightly foolish money for #5 but the brilliance of the James Murphy mix, and a few pretty good tracks on the other disc, justified it. Just.

― Shady Loch Lenin (haitch), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the #5 tracklisting?

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

tracklisting is at http://www.discogs.com/release/162365

doesnt look particulary appealing though, at first glance, anyway

― charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a surprising number of those already.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

1-03 Radio 4 Dance To The Underground
1-04 Playgroup Make It Happen (Zongamin Remix)
Remix - Zongamin
1-05 Le Tigre Decaptacon (DFA Remix)
Remix - DFA, The
1-10 Quarks I Walk (Superpitcher Shaffel Mix)
Remix - Superpitcher
2-04 Green Velvet La La Land (Francois Kevorkian Remix)
Remix - François Kevorkian
2-10 Rapture, The I Need Your Love

Well, 6. Are any of the others particularly good? Actually I don't have that mix of La La Land, but the track kind of drives me insane anyway, so unless it drops the "something 'bout those pills" things I think I'd pass.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

the unmixed gaubert disk = meh. there's some really, really great stuff on james' one.

xpost - oh, ok. you don't have the best stuff on the james mix - pauline murray, futurisk, mu, minimal compact, casiotone, c.v., midnight mike... if you can't find it on slsk, i'll burn it for you (it's sitting here on my desk, in front of me).

― lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be lovely. I can't really do soulseek, for one reason and another.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

no problem. i can't either, but i always assume that everyone else can.

― lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That Telefon Tel Aviv track on #6 is good.

― Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I know - you gave it to me! Full appreciation of that CDR is still on its way.

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

what Pauline Murray track did James chose? I just got a vintage Futurisk flyer in the mail. It reads "Dance to the Electro-pop sounds of...FUTURISK" in computer font.

― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

animal crazy. i think i've heard you play it out, maybe?

― lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

p.s. - try to get the futurisk 7". it's probably way more fun than a flyer.

― lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"animal crazy" is great.

― gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got both futurisk 7"s. Also 2 CDs of unreleased material and 2 DVDs of video footage, including a fake tv show interview they did while on speed. They have this old interviewer guy ask about what kind of music they like and one of them's like "we like the stuff on this new label in englad called Mute, stuff like Fad Gadget and Depeche Mode you probably haven't heard of."

Jeremy from Futurisk lives in Virginia now and comes up to NYC to play with his new band Receptors, they've played at Pianos 2 or 3 times. He's on the electrodiscopunks and nyhappenings list and I met him at the last Metal Urbain show at the hook.

Animal Crazy is the 10" I think? I've never played it out, the only Pauline Murray stuff I play in public are the singles Dream Sequences 1 + 2(a side is a wonderful synth-pop song, b-side is Martin Hannet doing cabaret voltaire) and Mister X.

― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, ok. my bad.

― lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

you so bad.

― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i have the Sonanze and Sei Notes in Logica reissues (killer weird Italian electro-minimalism), but know nothing of this Ann Steel album by Cacciapaglia. can anyone share this on slsk?

― andybeta, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's worth noting that the james murphy mix on colette number 5 is one of the best dj mixes ever.

― toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

This Futurisk stuff intrigues me.

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the basic story is this guy Jeremy grew up in england and moved to Florida around 79 or 80 and formed a New Wave band very much in the style of the british new wave bands, but also with a Hawkwind/Eno thing and with live drums, mixing electronics and live drums in a way that's pretty interesting for it's time. The track on James' CD is pretty unique, the other stuff is a bit more new wavey and/or electro-punky. Jeremy has a website:

http://shakespace.tripod.com/

We've talked about a possible reissue, weighing various issues regarding amount of material, recording quality etc as well as our own schedules. He's got a lot of really cool stuff, so if it's not us, I'm sure someone will do it.

― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

get channel 3 nick. channel 3.

― Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

ITV is now alarmingly hip?

― Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

coronation street is.

― jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't it always

― Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

in my opinion, yes!

― jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

even if I watch it with my mum?

― Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I now have the James Murphy Colette #5 mix and it's terrific. The vocal-free house track after Pauline Murray is terrific. Naum Gabo's 'Red Cones'. Does anyone know anything about it?

― Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I recognise the name Naum Gabo from somewhere but have no idea where.

― Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

He was a constructivist sculptor, but I think it's not the same man.

― Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Look at me and all my terrifics.

― Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

naum gabo = johnnie wilkes (of optimo infamy)

i love that one too.

i just ripped colette #6 off my coworker who just returned from france.

― gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I failed to give you the correct information Alba. Now you must cut off my head.

― Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No wonder I like it. It sounded familiar. It's probably some buried sense memory of a night at Optimo.

― Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll ask Billy Connolly if he can get me a copy.

― Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the naum gabo track is great

― s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

NAUM GABO IS COMING

― Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there wasa Naum Gabo remix of "Take Me Out", yeah?

― Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)
