How long has the world been prejudiced against LAPTOP NOISE?

Is this some kind of outgrowth of the hatred of IDM? Is this an anti-gentrification sentiment?

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer non-laptop noise. The laptop seems too easy.

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the laptop is like playing bass

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

of course there's lots of bad laptop noise! there's also lots of bad EXTREME NOISE stuff

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's NOISE, Jon. Most of it is bad.

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(blech, save it for the posers who bought the merzbox)

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the difference between good noise and bad noise? What's ingredient X?

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes and rap isn't really music, maybe if they had a live band instead of just sampling what other people did, etc.

theycallmetator, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I knew how to make better laptop (er, desktop actually) noise.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not soothing to the ears.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

rap isn't really music, maybe if they had a live band instead of just sampling what other people did, etc

well that's a pretty silly view to take

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Nonsense, Philip. I could name a slew of them that started there from the first post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I am very comfortable with the idea that noise isn't music (and I love noise). The definition of music that served people for the first several thousand years of culture still works for me. It reminds me of Picasso. People were like, "What is it, Pablo? Is it a painting? A sculpture? A collage?" And Pablo said, "It is just el guitar."

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

My buddy's had an a capella-sample-based laptop noize project for awhile there they called MASTAPUSS. It was pretty fucking cool - death metal growls processed into oblivion.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

rentboy - i'm sure theycallmetator knows that it is a silly view.

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

er, "buddy's" = "buddies"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i was serious

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The definition of music that served people for the first several thousand years of culture still works for me.

which one is that? Please don't pretend that there's been one constant definition over human history, it's mighty Western Civ of you.

How long has the world been prejudiced against LAPTOP NOISE?

who says it is?

common_person (common_person), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ALL LAPTOP NOISE PEOPLE TO THE BACK OF THE BUS

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I will say though that one of my favorite things about NOIZE is the lo-tech DIY ethic of people slapping their own circuits and shit together to make noises & effects algorithms & looping crazy shit all in their own distinct GNARLY way.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"the world" doesn't care about laptop noise.

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think "the world" would like it if they heard it either!

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i've resigned myself to only posting c-man quotes

jess, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

C-Man is ILE's last great hope, really.

I'm sort of in the "laptop noise seems too easy" camp. I mean, people have done interesting things with laptopz--Giffoni comes to mind--but the lack of effort put into so much of it is awful. The worst is Kid606 and Kid606 imitatorz, IMO. And Nickalicious is right that the DIY/home-built crap aesthetic is one of the things that make noise fun and interesting, but it's also what makes the whole scene/movement/whatever also fairly important. It's really the logical extension of Xenakis and that ilk.

Also, noise=love.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Xenakis was using computers waay back in the day. I challenge the idea that because something's done on a laptop, it's not DIY. writing your own shit using OSS like JSyn or PD or CSound is definitely DIY.

common_person (common_person), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is though that Noise is in the making. Hardly anyone wants to listen to it, but lots of people like to make it (and even they don't particularly like to listen to it i think). That's why the way that it is produced might matter more than in some other genres (assuming it is music). Personally I think it's often more interesting if it's made on a laptop instead of, whatever, an endless series of guitar pedals and a blender or whatever.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, let's just take it for granted that every post of mine over two lines will use some word more times than it should used.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say most people who like to make noise also like to listen to it. I'm not discounting laptop noise entirely by any means, but I find my preference is for the more circuit-bent/tapelooped variety.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think the world is prejudiced against laptop noise. is there some oval backlash going on? does fennesz count as laptop noise? because that is some beautiful music...

tricky disco, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i make noise using hypercard on a mac classic. where do i figure in?

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

don't you also rap about the suburbs? SEND ME YOUR CD. (mac classics are aptly named.)

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Laptops nois done relaly well is one of my favorie things. earlier this evening i was listnening to th e Fen'oberg a;bum my friend was like "wtf" - it's still a little edgy, i guess

tricky disco, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

to be quite honest, making noise with even something like FLstudio is shamefully easy. I do it all the time. I have a much greater level of respect for people who create melody with laptops and such, or who use their own weird home-built shit, as mentioned above.

Zach Ayres (Z_Ayres), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i make melodic noise stuff on my pc all the time-- but i listen to it!!!!!!!!!!!1111

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

tricky disco, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Laptop noise seems fucking lazy. As a drummer, I expect you all to cart around big fuck-off tower cases and >17" CRT screens to make your noise.

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ppl seem to be more against the fact that you aren't seen to be doing much in the performance of the music (and music it is!) cf to guitars or turntables and so on.

anti-laptop noise: the last bastion of rockism

ive been making noise on my own for years, and i cant stand listening to any noise bands. maybe it has more to do with me not intendindg to make noise but trying to write hundreds of songs or the fact that i cant be bothered with singing. laptops are just boring aren't they? people want to see hardware onstage, you know, pedals, keys, stuff,-its all about the stuff

kephm, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm always like "YO CHECK OUT THE GEAR"

Being anti laptop noise is anti-middle class (falsely, so many people spend tons of money on analog crap) and ROCKIST

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

analog is for haterz or people who have been playing guitar for waay to long

I can't wait to get coding in XCode on my sick OS X noise appz

I'd like laptop 'performers' more if they just turned around and let me see the monitor, wtf they're doing up there. I remember seeing Oval in like '98 or something and I was puzzled. Just what was he doing with those clicks?

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the biggest dud about laptop noise performance is the glowing apple logo.

Being anti laptop noise is anti-middle class (falsely, so many people spend tons of money on analog crap) and ROCKIST

b-b-but laptop noise may be the last actual bastion of ROCK AND ROLL.
