Has ILM really become indifferent to hip hop?

I can't back this up with numbers, but it's been a while since I read some interesting debate about, well, not just hip hop ideas, but also new releases (discussion of, say, Roots, new Vic Vaughn, OK Player comp, Jadakiss, new Nas coming up, Theodor Unit, new Freeway album, etc has been slim). Is this because of the quality of releases, boredom with hip hop, or the interests of people posting?

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

all the hiphoppers went away. well, not all of them, but some of the more vocal ones.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the new Brat single on the radio the other night and it was pretty manic craziness! Let's talk about that? Anyone heard it?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

do trife and dk post ever these days? haven't seen them in a while - guessing they'll prob drop back at some stage?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the new theodore unit.....

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

They are working on Government Names, which like I said, i think is great.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't see how the release of an Okayplayer comp could make anyone indifferent to hip-hop!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what's government names?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the okayplayer comp and okp artists in general have been steadily making their way down the tubes of hip hop.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

how near is this new freeway album? i heard "start spreading the news", it was kinda cute i suppose but not the kind of thing to make it onto an album, i'm guessing. the new nas seems astoundingly boring.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Shawn Carter = government name. Jay-Z = street / regular name.

So Dom, you like the Okay player comp? Just got a cheap copy today, and it seems 65% good. Skillz, Aceyalone, Jean Grae and RJD2 tracks are real fine.

x post: persumably "down the tubes" is downwards? if so, do you feel the need for a current / radio hip hop remedy?

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Shawn Carter = government name. Jay-Z = street / regular name

yep...but I meant the "Government Names" that trife and dk are working on...sounds like a website or something, but that phrase is too hard to google...maybe adam can come back and enlighten me...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

most hip hop these days IS astoundingly boring. at least it seems that way to a former teenage adolescent hip hop junkies like me.

i thought the okp comp was frighteningly dull or at best, average. there were about 3 tracks i liked. the roots one, the little brother one, and the truck and mac one. the blackalicious one was decent. but everything else.... garbation.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I was being sarcastic about Okayplayer.

To be honest, and I know my hip-hop tastes crossover with a grand total of zero people on ILM (past and present), it's been a pretty disappointing year for rap, albums especially. I've really lost count of how many albums I've bought on the strength of one track, sat back waiting to be thrilled, and then found out that the band have only bothered recording one track for the album, and just thrown any old crap together for the rest of it.

"Verita Supposte" is still fucking amazing though. Buy it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

www.governmentnames.blogspot.com

not trife, though.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the new mf doom projects are still good, even though he is starting to sound a little deflated.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

http://governmentnames.blogspot.com/ is me and dk and occasionally LC and joshd. trife's is http://gelandweave.blogspot.com/

I think we all more or less retreated to blogs because it got to the point where we were all starting threads about songs/albums/rappers that noone responded to except each other, and the only time ILM really dived into hip hop discussion was when it was some stupid thousand-post argument about racism.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also I wouldn't expect Freeway's 2nd album til next year, but his group Ice City has an independent album dropping this month, I'll probably do a GN post about it this week.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the theodore unit album features a properly recorded "gorilla hood", yes? i quite want that.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

'guerilla hood', sorry

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I've really lost touch with current hip-hop in the last few months and it's all ILM's fault :(

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

hey did you Gov Names folks ever cover that song "So Fly" by BP Ridaz????

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, NB Ridaz.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, what's that?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

NB Ridaz. They were playing this a good bit on the local hip-hop station before my walkman went kaput. It's some goofy candy-rap about how he's only gonna home for one night before going back on the road so he's gonna chase her around the bedroom or something. It's salacious, but in a very NeXT way. It hasn't taken off Billboard-wise, so I'm guessing its even too silly for today's rap market.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

also I don't realize how pathetic the rappers looked until I found that site today. They haven't a chance in hell.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't realize.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's the enthusiastic way that the one guy says "having sex till we both climax" that reminds me of NeXT.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.nbridaz.com/images-JPEG/411-MAGIC.JPG

Magic is the founder of Nastyboy Klick and/or NB RIDAZ. He writes lyrics, produces music, and pretty much has created the style which we call "Latino Hip Hop Ballads".

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Gov't Names loves all of you back! we have to take this groundswell somewhere big, possibly the energy drink market.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I seriously want commission...or "points" in the inevitable biopic.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

between this thread and the compliments I got on the site from Tom Breihan when I ran into him at a show the other night, it's a good thing every other area of my life is in a lull or my ego would be seriously over-inflated this week.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i switched from being into hip hop to being into heavy/black/death metal.

astroblaster (astroblaster), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

that is the beauty of ilm! (even when it sux!)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I only ever post about rap music or ocassionaly garage on here but barely ever get responses and i'm English and i dont have a blog so my opinion isn't valid or something (yeah but isnt one of government names canadian LOL)

scg, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There's lots of reasons people can come up with to attempt to invalidate one's opinion, ESPECIALLY as regards hip-hop music. Don't do like I have and take it too personally. That way leads to MADNESS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

scg you're doing your thing, you get nothing but respect from me. but yeah 2/5ths of GN's contributors are Canadian. not that it really matters, since we all get most of our info off the internet anyway.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

scg do you want to write for government names?

%%%%3333, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

we have to take this groundswell somewhere big, possibly the energy drink market.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but a van with this ad drove by me like an hour ago.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

My theory is that Hip Hop is currently the Pro Wrestling of music and the redundant formula that dominates television and airwaves has alienated even the die-hard fans at this point. We see the same rappers copping the same guns-drugs-playa styles in front of the same RENTED house/car/jewelry/'hos and you know what? It's a SHAM. None of it is real, and it sounds like it. Meanwhile, we see a trend of established artists nose-diving into a black hole from which they never return (when I learned years ago that not even Rakim could lay down a decent flow anymore, that told me something about the life expectancy of rappers), new talents rushing out records before they've even had time to develop proper (Lloyd Banks comes to mind), and more inventive artists being shown no love (Octavius, for example, dropped one of the most stylized, original hip hop records last year that no one heard, most likely because it didn't follow the above formula). Jay Z retired and Mobb Deep's lyrics went to shit (well, for what we've heard thus far, because that album has taken FOREVER to drop). Of course it's not ALL dried up, but the rivers are running mighty low these days.

I'm sure any real hip hop fan will try to tear me to shreds, but go ahead- it's all an act anyway.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Refill the rivers with CRUNK!! energy drink!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i think hip-hop has become indifferent to ILM

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe ilm is an indie alternative place and just had a passing fascinatrion with HH. i listen to prob mostly 'urban' music, but ive only been here a short time and im kinda a semi-lurker.

whos_step, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

indie alternative - that means everyone here likes the Postal Service and Hoobastank!

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

and everyone on this thread thinks Eminem is the best rapper

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

lol, but most of the threads could fall into this catagory

whos_step, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

im mean alternative/ rock to clarify.

although i got here looking for somewhere with lots of diff types of music (i was typing random artists names into google - slow work day)

why did i just type like yoda?

kephm, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX was never a hip hop site as such anyway. its a indie/rock domain for the most part.

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Curt1sss you are a genius

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

splooge is sort of right. i've set up a few hip-hop threads and a few indie ones - the indie ones far outstrip the rap in terms of the numbers posting. i'm not complaining - people should post about whatever they're interested in (plus i'm basically the same - if sum1 else set up hip-hop threads and indie threads i'd be more likely to know more about the indie ones, for sure). small indie bands like quasi would still get plenty posts for a c/d, v.popular rappers not so.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

a lot of hip hop threads in the past seemed to devolve into name-calling and massive dick-waving. perhaps this is why there are less threads about the genre and less posters around who are into it.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

shut up wanker *waves dick in oops' face*

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

(that was a joke btw!)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

quick history lesson: ilm was a kind of outgrowth of freaky trigger, which was centrally concerned with chart pop, not indie.

I said MASSIVE dick waving, you weasel!

paulhw - shouldn't we just be applauding the astounding bounty of dancehall threads these days??

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

chart pop, but written from the perspective of lapsed indie pop fans amt - no indie, no freaky trigger.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't been on ilx since its birth but since i have been i think its fair to say that more people know more about indie rock than hip-hop (including myself).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

As said above, a webpage that has its roots (no matter how distanced from) with a British webzine about chart music is obviously going to focus more on indie than hip-hop.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's what I was thinking, but actualy it's more the environment that surrounds hip hop that I don't care for, ie "heads" and the prevalence of "if you don't like what I like then you are a fag/not real hip hop/a dork/etc"

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)
