harder to think of as it generally comes off badly, but
mart fry manages okay on 'the look of love' partly due to splash
of self aware p-ss-take-ery.
unpompous in the extreme is 'a dream' by cale/reed off of
'songs for drella' which is *unbearably* poignant and is all-spoken.

"you can never tell anybody anything, i've learned that".

Also, Roy Montgomery & Kirk Lake - London Is Swinging By His Neck. And certain Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia tracks. Mmmm and so many great Shangri-Las tracks.

Nix on the "I Spy" (see related thread) but how about Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes, "Get Dancing." No one cares how you wear your hair, dahling.

Gawd...must be thousands I can think of. So, completely at random...

The Coasters, "What Is The Secret Of Your Success?"
Spoken refrain: "Some cats got it / And uh, some cats ain't!"
(In typical Coasters unaccompanied-bass chorus/punchline)

Actually, I don't think that pomposity is always necessarily a bad thing. Many of my favourites released LPs with ridiculous spoken intros: Prince, Butthole Surfers, Von Lmo, P-Funk a few dozen times...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"I AM THE GOD OF BRIMSTONE AND FIRE AND I GIVE YOU..."

Patti Smith, the poem at the end of "Dancing Barefoot." Not pompous, perhaps pretentious, but it delivers.

"...Asphyxiation, a fix on anything..."

"Finisterre" by Saint Etienne

Considering the lyrics it could have been pompous, but it comes off in a really exhilirating manner.

The guy from the Sugarcubes..Einar?
