Elliott fucking Smith-may he rest in peace.

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Guided by fucking Voices-still going strong!

f ath, Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Elliot Smith was the kind of artist that I thought I'd love but instead hate intensely. I've never heard GbV but they're probably better, so I'll pick them.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i've seen both play live on two consecutive nights at the same venue. spooky coincidence or something more sinister?

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

heroin or beer?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

don't mind if i do

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

They're each capable of being my favorite ever depending on the mood I'm in.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's see. I love them both, but if pushed I'd go for Guided By Voices. Elliot Smith released some beautiful recordings, but at the end of the day, GBV (Bob Pollard) maybe has more personality coming through. More variety, sense of humour and you've got to admire his risk taking over the years.

piers (piers), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

picture the scenario: bob pollard dies, all of his unreleased recordings are released as a 453-cd box set

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you hate elliott intensely?

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

picture the scenario: bob pollard dies, all of his unreleased recordings are released as a 453-cd box set

picture the alternative: bob pollard lives, he releases a 452-cd solo box set next year.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

*cry*

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

well he's already recorded the first post-GBV solo album. It's a double album. it probably comes out early next year. happy now?

thomas, Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"picture the scenario: bob pollard dies, all of his unreleased recordings are released as a 453-cd box set"

What's happened to the 453rd CD? Are you suggesting that Bob might actually start messing around with that tricky "quality control" concept or did one accidentally slip down the back of the sofa?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 5 August 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you hate elliott intensely?

Because his music annoys me to no end. Granted, the album I bought might have been his weakest effort.

My indie rock friends think he's God or something.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

better to burn out than to fade away=Elliott

kephm, Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

not at all, stewart. it's just that i think pollard's only had time record 452 cds worth of material since releasing his last box set two weeks ago. i assume the 453rd cd in the posthumous box set would be a "free as a bird" style disc with the likes of julian casablancas, doug gillard, matt sweeney, jeff lynne and wayne coyne building songs around leftover snippets they found lying around. "leftover snippets" meaning bits of tape with bob saying such things as "testing 1-2-3-4," "where's the bottle opener?" and "f!@#$ing franz ferdinand..."

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

GBV! Smith had some nice songs, but Pollard has written at least 100 brilliant songs. Smith is so hopelessly outmatched!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

elliotts songs are timeless

kephm, Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, still a little confused on how you use to love him but don't anymore. it's alright though. you seem like a pretty cool person though. good to talk to you.

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

fact checking cuz sadly OTM; Elliott all the way

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Elliott Smith = my favorite solo recording artist ever
GBV = Eh, never liked them.

Reed Rosenberg (reed), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

guided by voices. i'll take a band over some sad dude with an acoustic any day.

drew, Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll take the ability to produce a coherent, articulate, beautiful song over three ideas stretched out over 20+ albums, thanks. I'm just saying

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess it comes down to which rock n roll cliche you're most amenable to. to each his own.

drew, Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're in Minneapolis:

Elliot Smith tribute this friday, august 6
it would have been his 35th birthday
hexagon bar (2600 27th Ave. S. Mpls.)
No cover/Music at 10

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

elliott is god, o.k.? guided by voices are guess who. mind, even guess who had american woman and guided by voices have a few good song.

doomie x, Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Once again, it's a Songs versus Childhood Memories contest. And Elliot had all the Songs.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I never liked Elliot Smith.

GbV at least have some songs I like.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

both were probably my absolute favourite artist at one stage or another. but these days my ES albums get dusty whilst GbV still get plenny o' spins.

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder what's going on in Silverlake on 8/6 ...

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Elliott by a mile.

j@¥m© (jaymc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

elliotts songs are timeless
-- kephm (keph...), August 5th, 2004. (later)

If by timeless you mean bland and unmemorable but entirely unobjectionable, then yes.

IN SUMMARY

FUCK AN ELLIOTT SMITH

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Heatmiser best.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No you don't.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually miss Heatmiser . I don't miss Smith or Guided By Voices.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Heatmiser best, asshole.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If by timeless you mean bland and unmemorable but entirely unobjectionable, then yes.

so GBV were objectionable? you werent even around to watch GBV go from psych-pop-noise guys to shitty college has beens, so settle down

kephm, Friday, 6 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

if you didnt see elliott play an acoustic solo show you never got it anyways.

kephm, Friday, 6 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh okay, fine.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 6 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Guess everyone missed the boat, then.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 6 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Let me belatedly second the Heatmiser love.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill Semi-available on the interweb, although it seems that it may be patched together from various sources and not the actual release.

Not bad, but nothing very striking thus far. I think I have all of the Elliott Smith albums I need at this point (and I guess this is as many as I will get).

I love "Echos Myron," but I can't get too excited about the GBV anymore. Pollard is insanely entertaining live, so maybe GBV win.

Ryan WS (fffv), Saturday, 7 August 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

so GBV were objectionable? you werent even around to watch GBV go from psych-pop-noise guys to shitty college has beens, so settle down

My above comment has absolutely nothing to do with GBV; Elliott Smith, however, sucks. Whether I got to see him live or not doesn't really matter; I've had the opportunity, but never took it. Why? Because I don't like his music.

You're old. Settle down.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Saturday, 7 August 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Doomie what good songs does God have?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 7 August 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the number one song in heaven
Written, of course, by the mightiest hand
All of the angels are sheep in the fold of their master
They alwas follow the Master and his plan

This is the number one song in heaven
Why are you hearing it now, you ask
Maybe you're closer to here than you imagine
Maybe you're closer to here than you care to be
It's number one, all over heaven
It's number one, all over heaven
It's number one, all over heaven
The number one song all over heaven

If you should die before you wake
If you should die while crossing the street
The song that you'll hear, I guarantee

It's number one, all over heaven
It's number one, all over heaven
It's number one, all over heaven
The number one song all over heaven

The one that's the rage up here in the clouds
Loud s a crowd or soft as a doubt
Lyrically weak, but the music's the thing

Gabriel plays it,
God how he plays it
Gabriel plays it,
God how he plays it
Gabriel plays it,
God how he plays it
Gabriel plays it, let's hear him play it

The song filters down, down through the clouds
It reaches the earth and winds all around
And then it breaks up in millions of ways

It goes la, la, la......

In cars it becomes a hit
In your homes it becomes advertisements
And in the streets it becomes the children singing...

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 7 August 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Let me belatedly third the Heatmiser love. (Ian was in a training bra)

kephm, Saturday, 7 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

no contest: GEE BEE VEE!!
while i like elliott's stuff he was a stiff on stage. BORING.
gbv live is the furthest thing from boring possible.

aa, Saturday, 7 August 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't click on this thread for days because I didn't believe it was real. People are actually arguing on this thread!

Surprised that no-one's noticed that Elliott Smith played on a Guided By Voices album.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 14:44 (eleven years ago)

He was a fan - I stood next to him at a Giant Bug Village (Portland GBV cover band) back in the late 90's.
