Kraftwork - where to begin?

Alright, I have to admit, I've never really been a fan of the whole kroutrock genre. But I also feel like I've never given it a fair shake. Can anyone recommend a Kraftwork album that may be a good place to start and see if it's something I want to explore?

Jed, you are correct, but you are missing a key point Elvis and Winterland have noticed.

Kraftrock?

I second this thread, at any rate, I've loved all the Kraftwerk I've heard but never actually bought an album.

It's remarkable that this thread's gone on this long without a SINGLE person giving Mr. Fish a single real suggestion.

Turd De France by Krapwerk is a must-smell release
-- Joseph Pot (zdos20...), August 5th, 2004.

"Once I did wipe me with a gentlewoman's velvet mask, and found it to be good; for the softness of the silk was very voluptuous and pleasant to my fundament. Another time with one of their hoods, and in like manner that was comfortable; at another time with a lady's neckerchief, and after that some ear-pieces made of crimson satin; but there was such a number of golden spangles in them that they fetched away all the skin off my tail with a vengeance. This hurt I cured by wiping myself with a page's cap, garnished with a feather after the Swiss fashion. Afterwards, in dunging behind a bush, I found a March-cat, and with it daubed my breech, but her claws were so sharp that they grievously exulcerated my peritoneum. Of this I recovered the next morning thereafter, by wiping myself with my mother's gloves, of a most excellent perfume of Arabia. [He continues in this vein for several pages.] But to conclude, I say and maintain that of all arse-wisps, bum-fodders, tail-napkins, bung-hole-cleansers and wipe-breeches, there is none in this world comparable to the neck of a goose, that is well downed, if you hold her head betwixt your legs: and believe me therein upon mine honour; for you will thereby feel in your nockhole a most wonderful pleasure, both in regard of the softness of the said down, and of the temperate heat of the goose; which is easily communicated to the bumgut and the rest of the intestines, insofar as to come even to the regions of the heart and brains. And think not that the felicity of the heroes and demigods, in the Elysian fields, consisteth either in their Ambrosia or Nectar, but in this, that they wipe their tails with the necks of geese."

I'm not sure if this is bad advert for ILM or a great one.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

go to the discography section of New Waver's site - There's a whole album of Kraftwerk covers to download:

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, in tribute to the person who started all this (I admit I was just in a really silly mood earlier today, I apologize if I offended), if I had to choose an album I'd go with Electric Cafe - just seems the most accessible to these ears. (yes I know there's that remix thing in like '91 but does that REALLY count?) I've always found Kraftwerk a little too much to take over the course of a whole album, but I think Electric Cafe may be the exception.

That said, "Computer Love" (from the "Computer World" album) is my fave Kraftwerk song, even if it does go on way too long for some people. I still say if you just get up and dance to it you won't notice how long it is. Delicious bliss!

Yes! Finally, I've found another person who thinks CompLove is the best.
It's kind of sad that they were playing most of the "Computer World" album since their 1997- comeback but never this song.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's more fun to commute.
the entire commuter world album in fact too.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 6 August 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Computer World is super fun.

But for starters, i'd jump to Trans-Europe Express.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Friday, 6 August 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget the early stuff too: "Rucksack", "Stradivarius", "Kling Film" plus the "Rolf and Flora" album

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 6 August 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like what you hear of Kraftwork and want to investigate more kroutrock, Can's Tango Mango is as good a place to start as any.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 6 August 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, then there's the great Irish/German outfit, Eamon Doyle II with their albums: "Fergus Dei", "Yoda", "Carnival In Babbacombe", "Cork City" etc.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 6 August 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the eccentric caffeine album's not too bad either.
they're a huge influence on sinful minds

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 6 August 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tour de Frank" ought to really get your pulse going. For a different side of the group, try maybe "Bananas Symphony."

briania (briania), Friday, 6 August 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Just so you know - their song "neon lines" is not a response to "white lines".

___ (___), Friday, 6 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

*head explodes*

Music criticism from ADD sufferers is of very limited value. If Computer Love lasted for an hour I still wouldn't get tired of it.

My top tip to Abe is to check out Sect Object, Ralf's lovelorn paean to a sexy young religious mystic.

Palomino (Palomino), Friday, 6 August 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you like E2 E4?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Friday, 6 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'll give these a listen. Don't know why it's taken me so long to getting around to the whole Krautrock thing. It's kind of like broccoli. I know it's good for me, but I'd rather eat donuts. Well, I'm turning over a new leaf. I'm going to quick smoking, eat right, and listen to Krautrock!

Abe Vigoda, Friday, 6 August 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

My, you're quite calm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

what happened to the remastered box set?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Kraftwerk isn't 'Krautrock', it's techno music.

'The Model', on their album 'Man Machine', is surely their best track, even got number 1 :)!!!!

djspatz, Friday, 6 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Kraftwerk isn't 'Krautrock', it's techno music.

Oh thank god someone finally decided to say this. I can't
even begin to express my sense of relief.

Any work I might have had here is done.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 6 August 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus!!! I thought Kraftwork was a macarena band!!!

Elvis is Dead, Saturday, 7 August 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really much care for the retroactive labelling of some band as this or that type of music. Kraftwerk were not a "techno" band. When the band was at it's most creative, the appelation "techno" did not exist. Kraftwerk were just Kraftwerk, they were totally unique at the time, and there is _no_ label that can fit, or live up to their achievement.
