Musical Life in Helsinki/Stockholm

I'm heading off to teach in Helsinki this Fall. I'm there with my girlfriend (who's Finnish) but she's not so up on music there. I've been there a few times and have sussed out many of the record shops, but if someone (Tuomas?) has tips on other shops, clubs, etc. I'd be happy to know more. And I'll be Sweden in February/March and would love the same for Stockholm (I know not the best of time of year in either place). Thanks in advance.

if you post your query to the pHinnWeb list, someone will be sure to help you.

As far as the record shops in Stockholm goes, the best place to go is St Eriksgatan [map], they are all cramped up alongside eachother along that street. My personal favorite is Freak Scene, where you can find most indie pop / rock and punk records. They just changed owner though, so I don't know what it will be like in the forthcoming winter.

With clubs, it would be better if you asked when your trip is in the near future. The club life in Stockholm is somewhat changing, new clubs are getting started all the time, and others are put down to rest.

Geoff(?), what sort of music do you like? I can obviously give you some info, but it's easier if I can narrow it down a bit.

Moi Tuomas, I'm looking for some good local electro, but also pop. The shops I'd hit there were also good for country (Black and White wasn't bad and it's near one of my favourite bars Rytmi). I'm a fan of slightly obscure covers. Vinyl is good, new and used. Thanks for any tips. (And thanks also to the others). Will probably get in touch once I'm closer to getting to Stockholm (I'll actually be in Linköping, so some info there might be helpful too). I'll try pHinnWeb as well.

stockholm in february/march sucks. im the mayor but still.

you need to get here now and forget the clubs. just get up on the hills at 5pm and check the sunrise.

the hills, man. it's where it's at.

sincerely,
the mayor of stockholm.
