Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Talk Talk. Dumb to say ("When's the new Talk Talk dropping?"), looks dumb in print, misleading because it makes 'em sound like a garage band paying tribute to the Music Machine.

cLOUDEAD

vinnie bobereeno (vinnie bobereeno), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Talk Talk stopped making albums before the ridiculous term "dropping" was coined to mean "being released".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Very important q: Do you people say TALK Talk or Talk TALK (ie where is the emphasis?).. I was always with the latter but many disagree

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Talk TALK.

Japanese Karaoke Afterlife Experience

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I just used that expression to place it in its dumbest context. Don't know if I've ever referred to an album "dropping."

briania (briania), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: "Japanese Karaoke Afterlife Experience" vs. "Red Panda Sanskrit" : o )

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dropping" should be reserved for albums everybody knows are gonna be shit even before they come out.

e.g. Have you heard? Gene Loves Jezebel is dropping a new one.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 7 August 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the pooh sticks

This needs to be disqualified on the basis that it's actually a GREAT name.

phil d., Saturday, 7 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Even by '67 Frisco standards, "Big Brother and the Holding Company" was a particularly stupid band name. They couldn't choose between two prospective names so they used both. Result: everybody thinks that "The Holding Company" is the band and "Big Brother" is the frontman. Even though there is no "Big Brother" and no frontman - just Janis Joplin, who is neither a man nor a brother. Stupid name!

Now, if they were clever, they woulda dropped the "and" & employed an acronym. Result: "Big Brother THC"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 7 August 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

crispy ambulance, as i probably said on the other thread.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The only names I don't like on this thread are Chainsaw Kittens (sometimes the hard/soft thing just doesn't work) and Starflyer 59 (which is just boring). Most of the rest are great!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 August 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Namelessnumberheadman. Yeah yeah it's a Soderbergh reference, whatever.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The only names I don't like on this thread are Chainsaw Kittens (sometimes the hard/soft thing just doesn't work) and Starflyer 59 (which is just boring). Most of the rest are great!

I think wacky band names were only a good idea for 10 minutes in 1986.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Red X (aka the Red Expendables)

Astro Chicken (Vocals shy like Marshall Crenshaw but just as good songwritngwise anyhoo)
EggNoggin (altoona wailin from Hilary Maroon and J Why, pre-Caramelize.Bloody good)
Jiggle The Handle (at least one right-on track, which is one more than most musos will ever have; in this case, on a pretty-good-of-its-kind jamband comp, HELP US GET HIGH)

Da Veed, Sunday, 8 August 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

what's so great about the pooh sticks? i think that name sucks!

Because it comes from A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh stories, which are inherently cool.

phil d., Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Camper Van Beethoven....which, yes, is a pun...but just not a funny enough one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing is so inherently cool that it can survive being referenced by indie bands.
