Anyone else out there getting a little sick of these "couple" bands?

You know... Quasi, Fiery Furnaces, Viva Voce, Mates of State. I don't know why, but they make my gums bleed. It's not really even their music that annoys me, but the smug über-couple personas they seem to adopt. Well, except for Quasi. They're divorced and I like that. Go figure.

fiery bro-sis?

I think the smug ubder-couple personae comes from the media's obsession with that type of shit more than the musicians themselves.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yo la tengo are fronted by an uber-couple, but they're the least smug rock stars i can think of. and though they haven't made a great album in a long time, i like 'em very much.

as for divorced couples, fleetwood mac rule that category. x were pretty great for awhile too.

It makes me wistful for two person bands where there were no legal or blood relations e.g., Spinanes, The Lois, Heavens To Betsy.

I think he means bands with two people, not a band with a "couple" in it.

Darin,

Why do you own all of the Mates of State albums if they make your gums bleed?

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 6 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

mates of state make my ears bleed. I don't care if they're grandpa and granddaughter.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I mean bands that consist of a "couple" - boy/girl in a current romantic relationship.

And for the record, prickhead, I only owned one Mates of States album that I sold to a bandmate.

Anyway, this isn't really even about music. It's about me hating pretty people. Harumph.

Fiery Furnaces are siblings, you sick fuck.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 6 August 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in a couple band. If you think it's bad from the outside, just try being in one: "Honey, I was going to use lemon zest on the prawns, is that OK? Oh yeah, also can we keep Thursday night free for postering".

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I don't think I could do it. It's pretty nice to enjoy the freedom of flicking shit to four other people in my band and then returning to the safety of my own apartment. If I was in a band with my girlfriend, I'd be living in a constant doghouse for proclaiming the new !!! album to be a pile of shit.

Abe Vigoda, Friday, 6 August 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

postering

I read that as 'posterioring' and felt concerns that you were sharing too much info.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Strange how you noticed that, Ned, and yet ignored the hidden meaning in 'lemon zest on the prawns'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

LZ on the P

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, you can keep your milkshake Kelis.

but to go to Abe's point, being in a couple band is something that could get sprung on you unexpectedly... you fall in with a lover, and, without either of you really meaning too, you find yourself writing music.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Working with an opposite sex partner who is also your lover is a whole other kettle of fish to having a band with yer mates. All kinds of things you can't really think about without freaking out, eg:

-wot if band breaks up?
-wot if we break up?
-wot if band fails?
-wot if band succeeds?

Best not to think about any of it and plough on regardless, that's my view.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

And keep squirting the ol lemon on the prawns, every night, alright.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind the Raveonettes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Now Alex I have heard that, contrary to appearances, they are not a couple outside the studio.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh whoops. I'd assumed they were.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, me too. Then I read an interview with the female half of the band where she complained that everyone always assumed that any female in a given band is bound to be dating one of the other members. Touche, I thought.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I don't think John McVie and Mick Fleetwood hooked up,....but I might be wrong.

Dude, I was just trying to get my brain around your previous post and then you take it all away. Stevie Nicks was really hot though.

not saying I was sick of them, just an example of a couple who are also a band, but they seem very unannoying in this respect

--- silver jews

aa, Monday, 9 August 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck that. i think its great. sibling/marital ties make good music:
sonic youth
yo la tengo
blond redhead
viva voce
royal trux
boss hog - nevermind that one.

i sense what your getting at - but lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater. the bands above dont try to capitalize on their relationship ties - its just a fact. and then they make good music. i think what is buggin you out is the ones who use it as a marketing angle:
mates of state
handsome family
sonny & cher !
etc...

theres more smooth faced stoner rock whyte boy bands to hate than married people bands. if another fucking velvet underground copying motherfucker puts out another shitty overhyped record.......
i'll stop before my blood pressure goes up.

peepeePOOPOO, Thursday, 12 August 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Two piece bands at the moment in general shit me.

If I go out and nothing but some twat singing with a guitar while someone else sits behind a drumkit looking pleased with themselves I'm gonna scream.
