How do you clean vinyl?

I recently obtained a collection of old records that had been in storage since the Reagan administration. They are really dusty and I am afraid to clean them. I don't know what chemicals to use (if any) and I don't want to scratch them with a dirty rag. Does anyone know what is the best way to claen vynil records?

get in the shower and use shampoo (designed to rinse free easily from your hair). then put them to drip dry in one of those plate drying racks.

This begs the question: does one need to be naked to properly clean records?

Check here and here. I use this (~?40 new), very basic, very good. You may find it a bit laborious (meditative sounds better), but it's worth the effort. Put on some nice tunes while you're turning your vinyl. The cleaning mixture will last for about 150 records (it's reusable). You can make your own mixture, it contains pure alcohol, distilled water and a few drops of chemical soap.

xpost: or try to find a woman like that...

Okay, I admit it, I don't expect to read anything this funny here for quite some time.

I don't actually think that was a joke. I remember reading hifi mags saying more or less the same - that you could buy expensive solutions but that a weak detergent mix would do.

Use lighter fluid and a cloth - that's what 'dealers' go with.
