Alex in NYC: Your praise of Killing Joke, though a bit excessive, might truly be justified. Took the chance and listened to a few of their albums (S/T, Pandemonium, Extremeties..., and Night Time) and damn, I think they're the first really heavy band I've ever found melodic 99% of the time. Not to mention the fact that their lyrics rule and Lemmy Kilmister is being channeled in many of the songs.

SO, here's to YOU, Alex in NYC. ::Sings:: Real men of genius...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Sunday, 8 August 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

There are lots of reasons to kiss Alex's ass. I don't care for Killing Joke myself, but there's no denying that a man of genius is behind this thread:

Taking Sides: Wayne Hussey of the Mission or Carl, the Nextdoor Neighbor of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Harold Media (kenan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Knowing Alex, he will break open a brew in celebration of having converted a soul to the way of Fire. Salut!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex is the Rock-est man in the world. And y'know, someone has to be. Double Salut!

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 8 August 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

if you also love KISS and devo, then alex may consider leaving his wife for you!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 August 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex is cool, he likes good music. He shares my first (real) name, too, always a plus.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Knowing Alex, he will break open a brew in celebration of having converted a soul to the way of Fire. Salut!

Ummm...it's only 9:20 am here, but fuck, I've been up since 6:15 am (four month olds laugh as your precious concept of "clocks", "time" and "sleep")...why not crack one open?

Wow. Thanks all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't shared this with The Gathering yet, but I can't sit on it any futher. I've been tapped by the Joke to help contribute to a forthcoming book celebrating their 25h anniversary. Next week, I'm interviewing BIG PAUL FERGUSON (alreadsy chatted with him on the phone a few times now). Mind blown.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

But you barely know the subject! You won't have anything to talk to him about! Hey, why are you wielding that ax?

(More seriously, much congratulations!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

and Lemmy Kilmister is being channeled in many of the songs.

They're massive Motorhead fans. Seek ye "Implant" on the most recent album for verification of same (they collectively went to see Lemmy & Co. last October the night before this show: http://members.aol.com/motelhell/KJ-Webster-Hall-2003/ )

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to Night Time in full for the first time last night! (I'd already heard "Love Like Blood" and "Eighties," which are both damn solid songs)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I purchased a Killing Joke LP yesterday - Brighter Than A Thousand Suns. it was in the bargain bin but I still would never have gotten it were it not for the Alex's prosetylizing. how does it rate?

common_person (common_person), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

A bit of a washout.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's aged better than I ever would've expected (apart from the cover). I can't stand "Adorations", but there are some damn fine tracks there all the same, notably "Rubicon" and "Chessboards". Actually, the latest compilation, For Beginners contains a less diluted version of "Rubicon" (the guitars are amped up, the keybs damped down).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

noted. it will be listened to later today, but judgement on KJ will be provisional

common_person (common_person), Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's hardly inidicative of their "signature", but it's not their worst. Outside the Gate and Democracy (the latter crippled by rushed, muddled production and luke-warm lyrics) are the ones to avoid entirely.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Enigmatic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

>the ones to avoid entirely.

their catalog in it's entirety.

bahtology, Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh? The rest of my post disappeared. It was supposed to say something about liking Alex and his unique worldview.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

>the ones to avoid entirely.

their catalog in it's entirety.

Don't let this....

http://jupiter.walagata.com/w/alexinnyc/jaz.jpg

...happen to you, blasphemer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't let Sid Vicious appear in MacPaint?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And yes, I um.. .well... yeah, KISS used to be my favorite band... ::hangs head in shame:: Oh well, at least Unplugged still holds up.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Kiss was my first "favorite band" too (then came Devo, then the Circle Jerks and then I first heard Killing Joke and it was all over). But Kiss -- regardless of each successive, abjectly regrettable stunt they pull -- will always be near'n'dear to me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"(four month olds laugh as your precious concept of "clocks", "time" and "sleep")".

...and suddenly phrases like this sounds horribly sinister to my ears...

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, have you heard the Vans commercial with (I believe) the original version of "Wild in the Streets"? Kids these days....

Anyway, I'm curious, you like a lot of music I myself enjoy a lot, but how do you know some much about the banal pop shite that you hate SO MUCH?

Also, do you like FLIPPER?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

how do you know some much about the banal pop shite that you hate SO MUCH?

To his credit, Alex doesn't ignore what's around -- whether it's through work or MTV or the like, he's heard what's current to a strong degree. So he may hate but he KNOWS what he hates -- and how many have in turn actually listened to, say, the new Killing Joke? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Why should the common non-pop music fan have to "remain current"?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I pretty much know I'm going to hate Ashley Simpson!

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

..and suddenly phrases like this sounds horribly sinister to my ears...

As well they should. You have not truly known fatigue and frustration until you've had a child. It's like an endless Bataan Death March sometimes.

The 'Jerks are schilling for Vans? Well, at the very least, it's an accurate and appropriate product to endorse considering the band's demographic. Also, it ain't like they're sellilng a lot of records these days.

Flipper? I liked them a bit. I loved "Ha Ha Ha", but some of their stuff got a bit too samey for me (that said, why in blazes hasn't Gone Fishin' -- the one with the cut-out van on the cover -- been released on CD? That was a great record!) "FLIPPER SUFFERED FOR THEIR MUSIC -- NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!"

but how do you know some much about the banal pop shite

Ummm..I don't know. Well, for a start, I work for a major news weekly, and I write about upcoming music events for another major weekly magazine. And -- fuck -- I probably watch an unhealthy amount of garbage MTV/VH1 etc. etc. My eyes and ears work.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I have "Blowin' Chunks" (the live album) and its so f*cking great. Too bad my "band" had such different schedules and could never practice; this was this shit we wanted to ape.

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"As well they should. You have not truly known fatigue and frustration until you've had a child. It's like an endless Bataan Death March sometimes"

My head spins - considering that I'll start my dad job in November, these words are a highly appreciated memento.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Fear not, dear Marco! By the time Uncle Ned visits, Elia will be well behaved and I'll say things like, "My, he's a very calm and sweet baby." And then I'll notice the haunted look in your eyes and the jittering twitch, and I'll fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, Ned, the picture is clear and horrifying :)

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I had this weird dream the other night that involved me finding my old store-bought Killing Joke tape with the first two albums. At some point in the dream, Alex came by and I exclaimed "you are right, they really were awesome."

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm going to pick up a bunch of KJ LPs on the cheap at the best record store in Rochester, NY!

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Marco, I'll bring typically swaddling and cosseting American baby gifts so Elia can be caught up in them and can do nothing but sleep peacefully. Or so I hope.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope the same, Ned. Anyway, we won't allow the little tyrant spoil our fun. :)

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooo-ee! I love Alex!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Alex to the far left and me in the middle!

Cool! Where'd you find it?

I'm American, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You all need to die now. Horribly. Slowly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, did you get the last Big Takeover? I just got it. They do Killing Joke at last year's CMJ 10/22/03: "Extraordinary, powerful, and chilling all at once, Killing Joke left its New York audience dazed and excited." Damn!

steve hise, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, I am finally succumbing.

Alex I've never heard Killing Joke - tell me what to buy (I know I could find a thread on this, but this way I can come back to praise you)

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if you're in the mood to buy import prices, you're just in time for the newly released EMI compilation, Killing Joke for Beginners. More info here:

Tired of smearing pabulum on your ears? Have faith....salvation is here:

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Failing that, my personal favorite album is NightTime, although you certainly can't go wrong with the first record. I'm quite fond of the most recent album as well (eponymous....dubbed KJ2003 by the faithful). Apart from it's utterly crap cover art (just shy of an Insane Clown Posse sleeve), it's a mammoth album (produced by Andy Gill of Gang of Four and featuring Dave Grohl on drums).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not "Laugh? I Nearly Bought One!" Alex? Too obvious? It has to be the closest thing to a definitive "Best Of" (even if it doesn't include anything form their last 3 studio albums)!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Laugh? is fine too....I was only recommending For Beginners as it was just released. There's also Willful Days, but that's more rareities/odds'n'sodds.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Further salut: were it not for ANYC's notice, I would certainly have ignored les nouveaux Stranglers' "Norfolk Coast." And long ago consigned Cop Shoot Cop to the morgue pile. And probably dishonoured the fire & given in to the pablum, too.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations, Alex. I too saw a used copy Brighter Than a Thousand Suns in a record store, and instead of looking at the price or deciding that I was already spending too much money on other records today, I grabbed it and jealously guarded it for the remainder of my stay.

KILLING JOKE!

your wifes hot

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes she is.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, hold on, did she actually buy that shirt for herself?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't you just hate it when your other half thinks it's OK for her to nick your old favourite T-shirt, just because you've got too fat to be able to wear it without ripping all the seams?

Still, look on the bright side, at least she isn't using it as a duster.

Yet.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yey to the man who doesn't let us forget the mighty 'Joke, Cop Shoot Cop and other aggressive pearls... and also the man who brought to us... the COVER THREADS!!!

(It seems like you're going away or something... strange, ain't it? You deserve the praise nonetheless. Thanx for all, Alex.)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"It seems like you're going away or something... strange, ain't it?"

Sssssh! Don't give the game away - he's not supposed to know about that yet!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

:D

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The fetching shirt in question was indeed a gift from yers truly, but LET IT BE KNOWN: having grown up in England, my wife owned the 7" of "Love Like Blood" literally YEARS before she ever met me. That she also owns the complete works of the Blow Monkeys should not be taken into consideration and should be stricken from the record.
