given that,

lots of ppl form bands whilst at university.

some unis are more conducive to forming bands than others (allegedly).

Glasgow's Faculty of Indie Studies has a deservedly high reputation (the only such department to receive a 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise).

I can't name anyone except Liz Phair right now, but I remember being consistently surprised how many people went to Oberlin.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yup, i'll second oberlin, at least for indie rock purposes and what with the conservatory and all.

University of Georgia, not that they're very good on balance. But you've at least, what, three dozen under the Elephant Six umbrella alone.

Derek Krissoff (Derek), Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to mention Rapid Eye Movement.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And about another three dozen from der '80s.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

actually most of the foundation of the Elephant 6 collective went to Louisiana Tech and none of the guys I knew from Ruston,La ever went to UGA.

Re: most of the foundation of the Elephant 6 collective went to Louisiana Tech. Point about the Louisiana core of E6 is well taken, though I imagine a lot of these bands have some connection to UGA.

Sidebar: Anyone know about a book on Elephant Six in the works? I'd heard about something under contract, possibly with Da Capo, on Athens, GA in the 'nineties, but don't know the details.

No wonder Williamsburg feels like one big Oberlin reunion.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 9 August 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what about UNC? im sure the chapel hill branch has churned out many many bands.

Seems like I'm always encountering bands connected to the Hornsey School of Art. Ray Davies talks about it in "Art-School Babe" on Storyteller: "Emphasis on the HORN..."

briania (briania), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Also didn't one (or both) of Lightning Bolt attend Rhode Island School of Design?

Jason J, Monday, 9 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

NSCAD - Most of the Halifax Pop Explosion.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

who knew louisiana tech would've done it?!

I grew up in louisiana in the late 80's and early 90's, and lived in a town where you knew all 5 or the town sk8ers names if you were a 12-yr-old future indie rock girl. I did debate in high school where I had a massive crush on a boy from one of the ruston teams. later find out all these ruston guys formed seminal bands. the one I liked was in olivia tremor control. he was also an excellent debater. anyway, john fernandez, I had the biggest crush on you back then.
