August 20th Kompakt 100 Festival, Cologne: FAP?

i'm planning on heading to germany from roughly august 16 to 23, and i will be attending parts of the C/O Pop Festival while i'm there.

the kompakt 100 festival is on aug 20 in cologne and the lineup includes:
michael mayer, superpitcher, triple R, dj koze, tobias thomas, and the orb

a) does anyone else want to go with me?
b) is anyone already planning on going?
c) want to meet while we're there?

frankfurt is a really short trip by train (1 or 2 hours) from cologne, if that helps. i'm flying into frankfurt.

i was in Koln for Total Konfusion last month (allegedly Mayer's last time spinning said event, though apparently he says this sort of thing frequently and always comes back) and it was really incredible. Mayer's got a good sense of humor and was clowning around the booth mugging with his aviator sunglasses on. wish i could go again, this is going to be amazing!

No idea who you are, but yes I'm going. It's my 30th birthday on that friday, so it was very kind of them to organise a music festival especially.

BTW, there is a cheapo airline that flies to cologne - germanwings.com

That's the flight we're taking on friday morning from gatwick.

It's £180 with germanwings from Edinburgh-Cologne or £90 with Ryanair to Frankfurt-Hahn, which presumably even with the train to Cologne is cheaper. Still - an expensive night.

one of the best things I've ever been to. venue was really cool, all decked out in red kompakt circles with visuals flashing up every album cover and things. I enjoyed DJ Koze the best I think. such a good night generally though.

it wasnt that good. the suond on the upper floor was horible and i never found the ambeint lounge and the voigt set lacked beats and the alter ego set was too loud. and the beer prices were a fuckign ripoff. and the place was full of hipsters who did their semi ironic dance moves that go well with schaffel but are somewaht inapropriate for proper techno. BUT orb and koze are doers of good and the last two sets (m.mayer/allstars) were so fucking awesoem that i danced three hours staright and missed the superpticher set and acidentaly burnd two cigaretes down to my fingers.

No we were pretty shattered. did you go?

I thought voigts set was ace! lots of beats! very techno. Thing is I'd never seen a microhouse set before in a club so maybe it's a big novelty for me. I really enjoyed Mayer's set but after a while I thought he was drunk or high cos he was just throwing on whatever records he liked. Not that it wasn't great fun. Loved the inclusion of "The Abwehr Disco" and of course "Timecode".

Agree about the sound upstairs, Triple R seemed good but I was drug hunting at that point.

it was ace. so fresh and different. voigt/koze were quite technoey, voigt in his own style, koze's work I'm not familiar with so much but he seemed to like acidy stuff alot, and I think it was him who played "voyager" by Daft Punk. He also opened his set with some 60s crooner track which had a sort of schaffel tempo.

I liked those two best I think, possibly cos I'm so used to seeing techno nights which are basically detroit/clarke/mills/garnier or goodlife style and it was a really good and new interpretation of hard banging techno. Lots of that great swishy kompakt percussion and clicky hi-hats and stuff.

Tobias Thomas was great too, very housey as you'd expect.

Mayer was great too, though I really did suspect he was kind of drunk, he was sort of banging out stuff incongruously after a while. Maybe that was just me, I mean don't get me wrong I don't mind "Timecode" being dropped at 6 in the morning incongruously but I didn't enjoy his set as much as some of the others.

I've just realised I said much the same above.

Hawtin/Villalobos was very good yesterday in spots, I was extremely tired though still, it was great but I think by Sunday I kind of wanted to hear something stupid and lairy instead of more minimalism. But I can't fault it.

I want to go back for a Kompakt thing sometime though, for sure.

the next big kompakt thign will be the two floor "total confusion vs logistic" night at the stadtgarten / cologne, septebmer 17th. with mayer, tobais thomas, ark, krikor and cabanne. havent heard of the latter three. could be graet; the stadtgarten is quite roomy.

i wasn't in cologne but my partner in crime was playing at some party and his reports of the kompakt bash pretty much concur with ronan's. except, he added that he thought suerpitcher was about the worst dj he had heard in a long time. time for axel to get his superpitcher live set on the go perhaps?

btw, how crazy is that mayer superpitcher remix - that breakdown!!! saying that, i played it at the V festival and right at the peak point, these three girls came up and said - 'can't you play some funky house instead?' what is it with the english and funky house and more to the point could someone tell me what the heck 'funky house' is anyway?

haha that's like when I was playing "Lost In Music" and this guy and 2 girls came up and asked me if I could play some pop. ugh.

in the shop people often ask for "funky house". at first I'd try and tiptoe around the obvious folow up questions but now I just deadpan "bigroom?????" back at them and if they say "no no" I give them everything else we have starting with the best stuff until they say "ok that's enough".

alba - we're hoping to get justus kohncke to come to optimo to do his 'covers' set, although this has been meant to be happening for about three years so who knows? on a slightly related note, we should have andreas dorau over at some point. i have a feeling he'll be our most hated guest ever but i'll enjoy it.

i'm sure we'll have mayer back at the brwh early next year (or whenever we get it together) but we're more interested in getting live acts rather than djs over, (mayer is the only dj we have ever booked) and there's not many kompakt artists who play live.
