maybe as part of a selection of gifts from one person? or maybe your relatives are tight as a gnat's arse. I think aside from getting the Fraggle Rock theme when I was 7 this has never happened to me.

back when me and my brother were young and not particularly moneyed (uh that is to say we were at an age where one doesn't have much money - our family was v.comfortable) we would maybe buy each other a cd single as a gift. random example: the sign by ace of base.

One of my Aunts bought a copy of Eminem's 'Stan' for her young son when it was out. She didn't seem to notice the Parental Advisory sticker...

I received "Trouble" by Shampoo in 1994 from either my sister or my brother. Which was ace.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

my sister received "Sugar Sugar" on 7" for Christmas in either '69 or '70. How cool was that?

I bought my nephew a John Lennon cassette single a few years ago (with Imagine/Give Peace A Chance/Happy Xmas on it).

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, if someone gave me something awesome like the academy fight song/max ernst 7" or something valuable like the love buzz single for christmas, i could deal with that.

but no, not yet.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

does giving count? cos for a while i was giving a few special friends dupes of my sarah singles

that was before i figured out how valuable they are on eBay

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I got an Alanis cassingle in my stocking once back in the day. Story went it was free with the cd I got as a present.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I might have received some import singles as a gift from my sister, but I can't remember what cds she's bought me anymore.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Not quite Christmas, but my birthday is December 30th, so close enough I suppose. Anyways, my friend got me the picture disk of the Darkness' Christmas single.

Maciej Kasperowicz (Maciej), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

X-mas (or Chanukah!), never.
Birthday, many, "School's Out", "Ballroom Blitz" and "Le Freak" among them.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Christmas 1991: my best friend got me the "Reality Used to Be a Friend of Mine" (P.M. Dawn) cassingle. The following summer I got him "Baby Got Back" and Weird Al's "Smells Like Nirvana" for his birthday.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

In high school, I think I got "Macho Man," "Rubberband Man" (the Spinners not T.I., duh!) and (hi Myonga!) "Ballroom Blitz" 45s for Christmas, maybe a couple others.

chuck, Monday, 9 August 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Given and received many. A nice seven-incher is perfect for a music-loving pal that you can't spend much money on.

briania (briania), Monday, 9 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I got "You've Got a Friend" by Sonia & Big Fun off one of my friends for my Christmas once when we decided not to spend more than £1 on each other due to being very skint.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 August 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i got a cassingle of "if i close my eyes forever" by ozzy and lita ford in my xmas stocking one year.

annie aboleth, Monday, 9 August 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I was awarded a 45 of Huey Lewis & The News' "Jacob's Ladder" for winning a dance contest in the mid 1980s on the "fun night" in a ballroom dancing class that my parents had baffingly enrolled me in as a young man. The contest was not based on skills, per se: It was one where the D.J. played a record, and then would stop the song suddenly, and all of the dancers had to freeze. For some reason I was good at that. And I lasted until the very end.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I was given Abba's 'I Have A Dream/Take A Chance On Me (Live At Wembley)' single by my parents for Christmas 1979. It was a gatefold. Later on I got Captain Sensible's 'Glad It's All Over' and Madness's 'The Sun & The Rain' as birthday presents from my sisters.

What's wrong with getting a single as present, you rich bastard?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

when i went to germany in 99 it was during christmas and my friend's relatives all got me little gifts, they were all so nice. i got one single, which i have since traded in, "tears dont lie" by Mark Oh (?). its like some fast happy trance song and sorta OTT.

7" singles were perfect presents for school friends, although my first was Rolf Harris's Two Little Boys, bought by Auntie Effie for my 4th birthday.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it's amazing. Its says stuff like "Good Morning, G!" and "YEEEAAAAAAAH, BOYEEEEEE!" etc. I laughed for hours.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I gave a bunch of my mates "Ere's Your Christmas" by Punk Aid (features Captain Sensible, Charlie Harper, Mark Perry, Martin Newell + another track by TV Smith) last year.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)
