this past sunday morning around 2:30am

"you got to give it up
if you wanna live it up"

― gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose 1995, the last time I used a turntable at a radio station. I've put on and listened to many a 7" since then, but I don't think that I've cued any.

I miss it. Turning the record around until you hear the first sounds, and then turning it back a half-turn, something I hope future generations don't miss out on.

I once read that Dewey Phillips on WHBQ in Memphis would play two copies of the same song on two turntables at the same time, with one just barely off from the other one. As goofy as it sounds, I bet that it sounded great on an AM radio back in 1954.

― ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

and have to say that if i'd had "ceremony" and "eighties fan" lying around i'd have cued them up too.

― fletcher dexter, Monday, 9 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you all really cueing these up, or just playing them?

― Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU'RE RUINING IT, GET OFF THIS THREAD

― Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ceremony is actually the only 7" I own. I bought a record player to specifically sate my new order fanboydom.

― bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The last time I queued up a 7" single was when I was arranging them into alphabetical order on my shelf.

― Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

about a month ago i cued up "soft rock" by Lemon Jelly but i won't be cuing it up for much longer cos i just saw one go for 85 quid on ebay. Bye bye soft rock.

― jed_ (jed), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

About six years ago, the Fuzzy "Dead End Day/True Colors" 7" on Blind Records. I still listen to plenty of vinyl LPs, though.

― phil d., Monday, 9 August 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"sex symbol" by flame fortune. this would have been a good 6-7 months ago..

― purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought the new reissue of "pop musik" by M on 7" a week or so ago. its sounds better on vinyl then on vh1 classic.

RA! RA! RAWHIDE" by I Start Counting

― Thea (Thea), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Pleasant Plains OTM re: the fun of cueing records.

I only have one 7-inch that I got for free for perhaps being the first Asian to enter that Belgian record store that day. Played it last two years ago. I have never cued a 7-inch.

― alex in montreal, Monday, 9 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

By "cued up" I just meant "played," wasn't talking about DJing or anything. Just meant vinyl as opposed to an MP3 or whatever.

― Mark (MarkR), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

in that case, 30 min ago: Animal Collective - Who Could Win A Rabbit. never cued in the Pleasant Plains sense, though

― comme personne (common_person), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I put on the 7 inch that came with issue #24 of Carbon 14 magazine. A-side: High School Sweethearts-"Chicks Dig (High Powered Car Stereos), Blare Bitch Project-"Shut The Fuck Up" B-side: The Downbeat 5-"Dum Dum Ditty", The DTs-"Heartbreaker" (the last one a stones cover. good too!)

― scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

― Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yesterday I put on a copy of Al Green's "I'm Still In Love With You" I picked up for $2. I then gave it to a friend as part of a going-away present.

― Mike Salmo (salmo), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

caterpillar, 'swim away,' friday afternoon (8/6) on wprb.

my record player is blocked by boxes at present, otherwise that date would have been more recent.

― maura (maura), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

― el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple weeks ago, something by Boothby.

― Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

― roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Two days ago, either "Success Potential" by Gerling or "...dream sequence" by Cut Copy or "I Need You" by the Eurythmics or "Saturday Night Palsy (This Version Is Better Than The One On The Album)" by This Is Serious Mum or "Peru" by Lori & The Chameleons.

[I was, however, recording stuff to laptop for CD accessibility (didn't need the B-side of the TISM one)]

― kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe it was "Teenage Fanclub Have Lost It", which is a 7" record, but really is an ep.
If that doesn't count, then (like Bill) it was probably New Order's "Ceremony", or The Normal "Warm Leatherette". It's been a few months though.

― Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Had to be about 10 yrs ago, when I bought The Parliaments' "I Wanna Testify"/"I can Feel The Ice Melting" for $15 Cdn. (About $1.25 USD back then!)

(And, heh heh, I also fondly recall campus radio, late '80s, cueing up those Screaming Blue Messiahs and Dead Milkmen and [hi Alex!] Killing Joke LPs. Tho the only KJ tracks we ever played were "Change" and "Bloodsport".

― Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

a few weeks ago - making a version of MOJO's standard 'post-punk' C90 for a friend: various 7" singles in amongst the tracks from CDs/old-tapes/12" singles/albums...

The Normal – T.V.O.D.
Throbbing Gristle – United
Eno & Snatch – R.A.F.
Gang Of Four – Love Like Anthrax
Prag Vec – Cigarettes
A Certain Ratio – And Then Again

before that...months:
Gerry & The Holograms
'Heathrow' (early RT single (RT006?) of uncredited noise...)
Robert Rental - Double Heart

before that...about 20 years...

― Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to both play and cue up a few tonight in between bands. All my old floorfillers from Bob Tilton to Kill Yourself

― DJ Mencap0))), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably Devo "Working in a Coalmine" the other day. And - if jed is to be believed, I may no longer have my lemon jelly 7" either!

― ___ (___), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as I can remember it was a free Lee Perry single that came attached to one of the monthlies several months back.

― Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

On Monday morning. I received the "Sleeper in Metropolis" 7" by Anne Clark that I won on ebay (for £2!)

― flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian - "Your Cover's Blown" (B-Side to "Wrapped Up in Books"). Played abut three days ago.

― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night while mixing some stuff at home
Van McCoy - The Hustle

― rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Two days ago: Clientele live 7" on Unpopular Recordings, recorded by a regular ILXer.

― Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

about a week ago. "Captain of Her Heart," Double. was considering mixing into a set, but thought again.

― andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"You Make Me Feel" by Sylvester... it was a couple years ago, a friend of mine had found it (pink vinyl!) but didn't know what it was... I played it enthusiastically but she scoffed at it, what a loser. Awesome disco track IMO.

― Jimmy James, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of hours ago, Big Red Balloon by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood. The last 7" I cued up in the DJ sense (at about half twelve on Friday) was Wordy Rappinghood by Tom Tom Club, complete with incredibly gratuitous typewriter intro.

― Jim Cassius (J.Cassius), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

last night

the geeks 7" on S-S

― jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who took the "cued up" part literally. Haven't done that in around seven years. Last time I played a 7" was probably a couple of weeks ago. It was probably something like "The Fog" b/w "Inspector Marsais" by Fire in the Kitchen.
