What songs have requested a radio station play?

I don't remember doing this very often, but I remember the summer of 1983 (I think), and calling late night WRCN on Long Island (and whispering so as not to wake the folks) and requesting "Unchained" by Van Halen. And they played it.

I don't think I've called a radio station since, actually.

song that requests radio station play: "Hey, Mr. DJ (Keep Playin' This Song)"

"Please Play This Song on the Radio" - NOFX

I requested the Hal Al Shedad once when I was in high school. I think that's the only time I've ever done that.

Back in 2002, my night shift manager used to email Xfm and get them to play stuff like 'Bounce' by System Of A Down. The DJ was Shaun Keaveny and, since his show started at 3AM, it was pretty easy to get requests played. Adam Longworth, who did the same show on different nights, was even better, as you could phone him up and do karaoke to songs like Supergrass' 'Grace'

It was funny at the time.

i used to call the request show on Triple J every week. everything from swervedriver to the hard-ons. the girl who took the calls commended me on my taste, which was so nice.

Hahaha! "Overblown", the Mudhoney song from the Singles soundtrack. It WAS a few years ago now. The show? Keith Cameron on XFM.

i still wonder why they didn't play it ... it's catchy as all fuck!

as a wee tot I remember requesting "A Hard Day's Night" from the oldies station KOOL. They played "Hey Jude."

back when I was in high school I would call the college radio station and would name three bands I read about in album guides that I wanted to hear. Now that I'm at the station and see the library, I understand why my requests rarely got played.

I have never called a goddamn radio station in my life.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to always call WPLR in New Haven and WHCN in Hartford (do they still exist?) and request punk stuff in '76/'77. I always asked for records I knew were out in America but they never played them. I was the Pitifil Punker of Southeastern Connecticut. I ended up just insulting whoever answered the phone. Or requesting "Suffragette City" instead.

i requested "Naomi" by neutral milk hotel on some indie show on Roger Williams College's station

Between the ages of 9 and 13 I would call the oldies radio station in Pittsburgh, 3WS, with great regularity. Whenever they played a song I didn't recognize and didn't back-announce it, I'd call them and ask what they'd played; they were nice enough to let me know and sometimes let me request something. I guess they got a kick out of a little kid enjoying that stuff. Among my requests in that time span were "Elenore," "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," "Daydream Believer," and "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)." Crucial to my musical education and appreciation, and I remain grateful (even if they never seemed to have anything by Paul Revere & the Raiders).

i requested yo la tengo play some billy joel when i made my pledge during their annual live all-covers performance on wfmu this spring. they ended their set by saying they'd gotten "a lotta requests" for billy, and proceeded to play "we didn't start the fire," using the names of all the other bands and songs that had been requested, but that they didn't get around to, as lyrics. it was quite amusing.

to this day, i wonder what constitutes "a lotta requests."

Paul Revere & the Raiders' "The Ballad of Paul Revere" is a song that requests radio play: "And all you stations/Across the nations/Please play our records for your congregations"

As for me, I called those jerks at CKCY and asked 'em to play "Get Off" by Foxy back in '79, and they STILL haven't played it! Fortunately I found the 7" in '80. And the compact disc in '93 or thereabouts.

Finally, as university-radio DJs back in the late '80s, my cohost & I received a request for "Honky Tonk Cunt" by Country Bob & the Blood Farmers, which we had to ignore 'cause we'd already played Marianne Faithfull's "Why'd Ya Do It?" that evening and were trying to keep the profanity to a minimum (it was our first show.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

damn. all country bob and the blood farmers requests should ALWAYS be honored. i can't imagine they've been requested that often in the entire history of radio.

Hmm, you beat me. In 1990, I called the request show on JJJ and asked for the Mr Mojo Risin' remix of 3rd Bass' The Cactus by CJ Mackintosh and Dave Dorrell. "We'll have that on for you in the next hour," the nice lady on the other end who may or may not have enjoyed Jim's taste promised. I'm still waiting, but have also not found the 12" in the interim which makes the gap probably more frustrating.

I thought I was the only person who knew who the Hal Al Shedad were. Those two 7"s were AWESOME in a Circus Lupus kinda way, but they dropped the ball with that LP...

I ALWAYS request the BOC, baby - "Burnin' For You" or "Don't Fear The Reaper" - it's all good. What else is there?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got some Hal Al Shedad 7"s. The one on Tree(?) and TEH SOUNDZ OF SWORDZ CLASHING. above average, but not spectaceluklarlr.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i have that one. i liked it! haven't heard it since it came out though...
