Jamelia

Deserves her own thread because I need to know whether the album is worth picking up, but *also*:

Has anyone heard her live acoustic cover of Linkin Park's "Numb" - yes, I'm not kidding. It's amazing! I find it quite affecting anyway. SEARCH!

Also I love both the original "See It In A Boy's Eyes" (which lends further credence to my theory that the flipside of the electro-fication of UK pop is a return to mid-nineties pseudo-trip hop; this is produced by Cameron McVey incidentally) and the JD remix, which has to be the best of his work with Jamelia so far (see also "Ayo Superstar" and "Bad"), especially for the too brief ragga chat section - Jamelia can stand in for *all three* members of Mis-Teeq simultaneously! It might even surpass his remix of Ms. Dynamite's "Put Him Out".

I thought "Superstar" was a little dissapointing after "Thank You", but I'm interested to hear the album. Hearing that she does acoustic Linkin Park covers combined with the version of "Superstar" that she did on The Panel last week makes a little worried it might be more Traci Chapman and less Mis-Teeq.

I posted the Jamelia cover a few months ago - it's quite stunning. That said her album is REALLY NOT VERY GOOD. "Antidote" and "Taxi" are worth tracking down, though.

No, the Linkin Park cover isn't Traci Chapman at all! It's total angry-diva powerhouse! I'm trying to think of a reference point but it's really difficult. Maybe En Vogue's "Free Your Mind" in the vocals?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I just wish she'd go further than just flirting with being an Alesha style dancehall DJ, because when she does she sounds great. "Ayo Superstar" is a bit generic in the beats department but Jamelia's great on it, and the "See It In A Boy's Eyes" remix is possibly even better.

It's also pretty obvious that she should probably merge her two albums into one - keeping the singles and reducing the filler - and have a decent crack at the US, sort of like what Robbie Williams tried.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

but her first album was so long ago! I can't remember a single thing from it!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither, but there's bound to be a few things off it better than the bland filler off "Thank You".

The Jamelia album shits all over Beyoncé's and Kylie's, but it's not as good as Kelis's. And as for Beverley Knight...she can bugger off.

Hope this helps!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

No! The Beverley Knight album is quite good!

i saw jamelia perform 'numb' live a few months ago - it wasn't an acoustic cover though, it was a guns-blazing rawk cover, and yes it was fantastic!

i've only heard the album in shops and at parties so far but i've always thought it sounded pretty good.

the two-albums-into-one is a good idea though. the singles 'money' and 'boy next door' from Drama are essential, at least.

I haven't heard her cover of "Numb" but from the descriptions in this thread I think the closest comparison might be to - ha - Beverley Knight's "Come As You Are".

There are two versions of the Jamelia album, I have an original promo from last year and it's pretty good. Some filler but not as much as I expected, and it needs to be pointed out just how amazing "Life" is. Also, "Bout" may have flopped as a single but it's still an excellent tune. The re-packaged album is quite different though.

"Money"! I'd completely forgotten about Jamelia's first mini-career. That song was awesome. Opera samples in R&B need to be encouraged. Shystie's picked up on that a lot, actually.

Oh and Bubba Sparxxx is on one of the Jamelia songs... er... "Club Hoppin'", I believe. It's a bit odd.

people seem to have forgotten 'Money' and how good it was - better than 'Superstar' still

From PJ's description, I was expecting something a lot more insane, but it's OK to good, pretty much slides alongside unnoticed with all the US electro&b from the past six months.

Sorry about this but I badly want to hear this Beware Of The Dog track by Jamelia, does anyone have it?

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

S'ok, some crafty sleuthing brought me to the entire album (and Beware Of The Dog is like woah)

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

I don't liken "Beware of Dog" at all. The sample is just too obvious (I didn't mind the obvious sample in Rihanna's "S.O.S.," but this just strikes be as lazy and annoying).
