Bear in mind I'm going to have to BEG the missus to join me, and it isn't playing where I live so I gotta drive out to Jersey (40 minutes) - can anyone who's seen it convince me not to go?

funniest rock movie i've seen in years. like spinal tap, only with a real band. and i don't mean that in a general way; i mean it quite literally. i walked out of the movie wondering how aware of this the band was.

and at the same time, it's a really great inside look at an actual, dysfunctional rock band. the only analogy i can think of is the beatles' "let it be," which i also loved, but which wasn't very funny, perhaps 'cause the beatles never got the chance to see "spinal tap" and therefore didn't know what to shoot for.

the amount of access the filmmakers' got is stunning. and there are fabulous guest spots from dave mustaine and from lars' dad.

and in case it's not clear from the above: go, go, go. it's great.

you'll never hear a metallica lyric the same way again.

What you should expect?

Uh, Metallica?

Gee.

I'm American, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a great movie, and I don't like Metallica.

what should I expect?

Well, the room will be dark. There'll be a lot of seats, most of them filled by strangers. Popcorn and other comestibles will be avaiable in the lobby. People may speak during the film, but you should feel totally comfortable with telling them to pipe down. You may want to visit the men's room prior to the commencement of the filmed entertainment, as you probably don't want to miss anything. You should leave your cigarettes behind, as smoking is no longer permitted in movie theatres. Don't yell out "FIRE" during the proceedings either.

you definitely want to do that. it's a long movie.

I was just going to wait for video, but now the mention of Lars' dad and especially Dave Mustaine has me very intrigued. What sort of 'spots' are these?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't want to spoil the movie for anyone so IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT MUSTAINE AND LARS' DAD, DON'T LOOK BELOW.

mustaine shows up on the metallica therapy couch and confronts lars directly about getting kicked out of metallica. he gets really emotional. it's astonishing that he let the moment be filmed. and the filmmakers really let it play out.

lars' dad is fucking hilarious. he's in for two scenes, and suffice it to say he disagrees with lars about how good st. anger is, and he makes lars squirm.

END OF SPOILER. YOU CAN READ ON FROM HERE.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ACTUALLY IT PROBABLY WASN'T MUCH OF A SPOILER. NOTHING YOU COULDN'T READ IN A REVIEW. BUT JUST GIVING Y'ALL THE OPTION.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG LARS'S DAD IS GANDALF

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

either gandalf or harry shearer, depending on your perspective.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

gandalf as an eccentric danish beatnik

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

so which is better, the motley crue biography or the metallica movie? i read the former and it was fantastic. maybe the two really can't be compared, but that crue book was a case study of dysfunction. they had therapists for awhile, too. the therapy thing seems pretty de rigueur in the world of commercial music entertainment now though.

tricky disco, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

lars's dad, sitting in the studio, stroking his beard. CLASSIC.

Does anyone know of a UK release date for this?

I wish I lived in America.

I've always sorta resented post-Burton Metallica for existing, but this was really REALLY funny (and kinda painful) to watch. My main thought while watching it was why are they bothering to play music together if they don't enjoy it, and they don't need the money? Of course, OTHER people need them to make money (like their $40k/month "therapist") so that probably explains it, but its just sad to watch these idiots talk like a bunch of college girls about their precious "feewings" (as Matthew might say). Also, lyric writing by committee = hilariously awful results.

This 'documentary' was pure whining. Pathetic.

lyric writing by committee = hilariously awful results

it was terribly amusing to listen to them toss around their lyrical ideas in that committee meeting, reading off their yellow legal pads. it was terribly frightening to realize, some time later, that they ACTUALLY USED SOME OF THESE LYRICS on the abum.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked how they were also letting the therapist contribute "lyrics".

"My lifestyle determines my deathstyle!" GENIUS! yeah right

The part where they're all sitting around the table at the end, talking about the album's title, St. Anger. And James says that he likes it for the iconic sound of it, and the PR guys are saying "Yeah, you could see it on a wall!" and then Lars comes out of nowhere and says,

"You know, I think that the album should be called Frantic."

And James just looks at him.

My wife had the perfect comment about Lars: "He's like a rock and roll David Brent!"
