Which version do you enjoy the most?

I'll go with His Name Is Alive's, because it's the most incredibly gorgeous of the three. D&N's is nice, but not special. I like the original least of all.

Wow I'll have to download those covers if they're that good. I've never heard them but Big Star's "Blue Moon" is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Elvis OWNS "Blue Moon."

completely different song MC

ah right, i'm not 100% up on Big Star apart from Sister Lovers and I Am The Cosmos. I bought the first two albums in about 1991 but don't think I've ever listened to them all the way through. September Girls, When My Baby's Beside Me and that one about paedophilia are the only songs off either which immediately spring to my mind.

Let it be known that THIS, the Alex Chilton composition is the song in question.
let me be your one light
and if you'd like a true heart
take the time to show you're mine
and I'll be a blue moon in the dark

while you sleep you'll see me there
clouds race across the sky
close your eyes and don't ask why
and I'll be a blue moon in your eyes

morning comes and sleeping's done
birds sing outside
if demons come while you're under
I'll be a blue moon in the sky

let me be your one light
and if you'd like a true heart
take the time to show you're mine
and I'll be a blue moon in the dark

It's on Sister Lovers, btw. I'll stop teasing now.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Not on my version of Sister Lovers it ain't. I am aware that the album has been released in several permutations.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You got a raw deal then and are forgiven. Damn near best song on the record IMO.
It's on my Rykodisc edition, the most common CD edition in the U.S. as far as I know.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

As I recall, both HNIA and D&N drop the last G chord in the sequence (on 'dark', 'eyes', 'sky', and 'dark'), leaving the F hanging, which makes the difference for me.

Yes, search the covers, definitely! Are there any others, aside from the ones I've mentioned? Chilton might be one of the more covered songwriters.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the info Aaron, the Rykodisc version is I think still available in the UK so I'll look out for it over the weekend.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

or just download the track(s) your edition is missing if you can't find it.

Nada Surf and Myra Holder seem to have the only other covers of Chilton's "Blue Moon" that AMG knows about, derrick.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, so the Big Star original doesn't sem to have the last G that I thought it did. Maybe that was another version?

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I only know the Big Star, Myra Holder and HNIA versions. All are good but the original is the best. Who's covered "Nightime" off that third album? It's one of the most beautiful songs ever.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Elliott Smith used to play "Nighttime" live sometimes (dunno if he ever recorded it?) and it was gorgeous both times i heard it.

I haven't heard the other versions either. It's a great song though.

On a related Third/Sister Lovers note, it's fun to spot how much of REM's "Man on the Moon" is lifted from "O Dana" and "Nightime"; the bass, the slide guitar, the acoustic, even general atmosphere... but to great results obviously. Actually "Thank You friends" is in there aswell with its bongoes, and the melody line of the chorus (and repeated vocals)...it's just a big old wonderful Big Star ripoff.

eleven years pass...

Is this version of 'Blue Moon' a put-on? The whole thing sounds kinda ramshackle and thrown together, but the 'ba-ba-ba-ba' dude is cracking my shit up and I can't tell if that was the intended effect.
