Leningrad Cowboys is actually Finnish joke-rock orchestra.

I totally remember seeing that video all the time when I was like 9 or 10.
How did it go again?

That Russian boyband who were number one in Russia for about three years and who's name translates as Take This. Them.

― AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"barely fuckable"

sick man.

― dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

tatu were barely fuckable when the soviet union existed

and I'm slow right now but yes, tatu were like 5 years old then. "Barely fuckable" is understating the matter.

Aquarium (Boris Grebenshikov's band) and KINO (a rather good Smiths-esque quartet with a Korean goth singer who sounded somewhat like Butler of the Psych Furs). Kino are worshipped in Russia but never made it outside, partly because Tsoi (the vocalist) was killed in a car crash in 1990.

Time Machinefor one...Aquarium still exist, they just performed in NYC early this year.

History Of Russian Rock

― Venus Glow (1411), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Time Machine were awful Party-sanctioned syrup pop. The lead singer has a cooking show on Russian TV, 'nuff said.

If we ever do Soviet Rock S/D, the "S" are Auktyon, early KINO (pre-1987), early Tequilajazzz (pre-1995), Grebenshikov's acoustic albums, Messer Fur FM and their offshoot Messer Chups, Sergei Kuryokhin (not technically rock but still). D = everything else.

As for the current situation in the Baltics, Latvia has a decent Britpop crew named Brainstorm, and there was a nice St. Etienne-inspired Estonian band called Dallas; they had an album out on High Park Records - Margus, do you know what happened to them?

― joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember owning this two record comp on Big Time from 1986 called Red Wave which featured four bands, including Aquarium, so that's how I learned about Boris G. (who Marc Almond covers on his Heart of Snow album). Trying to remember who else were on it.

Then there was Autograph (?), who were this approved band that the Central Committee or someone beamed out to the evil capitalist world in 1985 as their contribution to Live Aid. I remember a fast song and a slow one.

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Autograph. God that was a disaster.

If you're interested, look up Michael Apted's excellent documentary LONG WAY HOME; it's about the CBS Records' ill-fated attempt to refashion Grebenshikov from a folk-rocker into a ridiculous glam figure and sell him to the West. A fantastic indictment of the whole machine at its late-'80s most cynical. (And Grebenshikov's best songs are on it).

― joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Grebenschikov's releases are unfortunetly stylistically all over the map. The last one I heard went from fake reggae to fake prog. He continually attempts to find a nitch for himself, which may not exist. Clearly a talented musician with a better than average voice. He should stick to bard...which I'm sure he will fall back upon as he enters his 60's.

― Venus Glow (1411), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

BANG
SAY DA DA DA DA
TELL ME YES
AND LET'S FEED THE FIRE

is how that one song went

― g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(Continuing from g--ff: )

Bang Bang!
Say Da Da Da
Nothing Less
I Wanna Hear a Yes

(I haven't heard that song since 1989 and it's still right there as an earworm. Gah!)

― Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

YES THAT'S IT.....oh fuck. earworm is right, now I can't stop hearing it!

― AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

― maura (maura), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Couple issues back Signal to Noise had a massive review of a Soviet free jazz box set, like 8 CDs from the 70s and 80s. The writer apparently knew this way, way underground scene quite well, which floored me.

― Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, I can hear the zither already (x-post). It's a long, dumb story; I used to write for a dorky film site that required all its contributors to use film character names, and their email addresses to be corresponding actors (e.g. Antoine Doinel was jeanpierreleaud@yahoo.com or whatever). I was Holly Martins, so voila.

― joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Venusglow OTM, Grebenshikov would have been truly great if he laid off genre pastiches and stuck to his best sound: vaguely Celtic-sounding folk.

Some Americans are obsessing over the guy here.

― joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Brainstorm`s bas player was killed in a car accident.
Dallas disbanded after leaving of female vocalist.

Book to look for:

Rock Around the Bloc: A History of Rock Music in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union
by Timothy W. Ryback

Weird. The guy in the mural looks suspiciously like early 80s Bono.
