The Bluetones- "Slight Return": Classic or Dud.

The last big Britpop single? Held off number one by Babylon Zoo. It's weird to think nowadays, when The Bluetones seem like a punchline, that at one point it looked like they could become the biggest band in the UK. Anyway, this is a really good single. Discuss.

Liking it's a bit embarassing now, but it sounded nice at the time. Now, "Solomon Bites The Worm" and "If", they were better.

This is ILM Jeopardy and you should phrase your answer in the form of a C-Mang question e.g.

This is a fantastic, poignant, jaunty Britpop classic whereas 'Intergalactic' by the Beastie Boys is just a load of old shit isn't it.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pleasant enough.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Intergalactic IS just a load of old shit.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

it was classic. so was the album. their downfall was that they came at exactly the right time.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, it came out.. 1996? Despite that, it used to come on the radio every day while I was at work ca. 1999 and I used to dance around to it while cleaning counters and restocking fridges.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

their tunes summed up all that there was about the summer of '96, they were truly the best band in the world ever, and I like to listen to them on stereo headphones while carefully contemplating pictures of ms par|s h|lton, who everybody in the whole world fancies, and if you say you don't, your a liar.

Nirvana, on the other hand, were a bunch of whining losers

Bluetones win, yuo gaylords.

C-MANg (Pashmina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Will that do, Stevem?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

titter.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought 'marblehead johnson' was alright. it's about having an erection. we've all been there, eh lads...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

huh. nice album. beautiful cover. nice summery byrds-like tunes. if they never did anything else they could have been massive in a cult-lite way. but yeah, this is good stuff.

doomie x, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

'after hours' is also good

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

that was supposed to be in very small font

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway i prefer Shack's 'Natalie's Party' and Supergrass 'Moving' - haha, 1999 was the real best year for Britpop...

loved blutones back in britpop times when i was an early-mid teen. i still like them, but until recently i figured that my liking of them was just nostalgic fondness, and the music was probably rub. alas, this song has recently appeared on the easy-listening comp at work, and i decided that the 'tones are actually just *good* (not great, though) in their own right. this is gorgeous summery indie-pop - i will have a look through my old cassettes to see if i still have a copy.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Their Xmas party at the Leadmill in 1995 was just brilliant /sigh

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Killian's about right, though my nostalgic fondness for the song might be a little higher, so I'll say semi-great at best and very good at worst. I miss that summer.

Barima, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't Stand Me Down" on the b-side was better.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am slowly realising that I never actually was indie to start with. What the fuck am I then?
-- Sick Mouthy (sickmouth...), August 10th, 2004.

Aha!

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

classic - if only for whenever Mark and Lard played it on their show.

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That was deliberate, Ed!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i would rather listen to death metal/hip hop mashups than this turd of a record ever again.

purple patch (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite good. But 'Bluetonic' is actual proper classic.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Are You Blue Or Are You Blind is better bkz handclaps innit.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: "Slight Return" or the end of "After Murder Park". Same tune, dudes.
