popular myth that only a few seconds of 'spaceman' are good is untrue - the whole thing got played through at a house party the other night and i enjoyed the entirety of the slowed-down-rock-version plenty. i also think "animal army" kicked ass - better than most smashing pumpkins rock songs (who i think it somewhat resembles).

a cautious classic from me than, but mainly just cos i think they were certainly not bad enough to become a laughing stock.

But has he written a spherical song yet?

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it's possible...

"Spaceman" is fucking awesome.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

So was "I'm Cracking Up, I Need a Pill" in an utterly preposterous way.

trying not to repeat my view on 'Spaceman' (if people like helium vocals so much why don't they buy happy hardcore blah blah) or 'Animal Army' (bloody hell is that Ian Brown doing the verses??!) or 'The Boy With The X-Ray Eyes' (Goldie/Playford mix pretty cool)...did Jas Mann talk the talk but not walk the walk vis a vis he is now a fork-lift driver? what stopped him from being biggest pop-art icon since Bowie - assuming that's what he aspired to being?

Lack of talent.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

They once performed 'The Boy With The X-Ray Eyes' on some late night ITV show when I was younger. Liked it a lot, and BZ define "utterly preposterous", really.

"i'm cracking up i need a pill" was fucking awful!!! i have that on a free cd that came with a q mag. i'd forgotten about that song - i'm downgrading my vote to not-so-classic.

Wooden, yes that's what I thought too. Ah well...

five years pass...

"Spaceman" is fucking awesome.

it is amazing what 6 years and actually relistening to a song will do to your perception of it

also I don't think there is a band who benefited more from me not having ever seen them in a music video than this one because when not watching the ridiculously terrible video I can deal

"pungent smells" indeed. I knew someone who bought the single and was hugely disappointed that it wasn't sped up all the way through.

Basically they should have let Alvin & the Chipmunks sing the whole song.

Or made a Levi's ad with that hamster dance song?

one year passes...

lol it only took 18 months for me to fall back in love with "Spaceman"

never gonna watch that video again tho

you're going to make me go in the archive and dig out the second album aren't you ?

mark e, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 09:33 (fourteen years ago)

Jas Mann's previous band, The Sandkings, were much better, especially the single All's Well With The World.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 09:43 (fourteen years ago)

"To say Jas Mann is to say THE man who's totally Babylon Zoo. He's the Chungwit the Biff Boff and the Puff Pastry Hangman."

I still remember how me and my friends were super excited about hearing the full "Spaceman" after the snippet of it appeared in the Levi's commercial, and then MTV started playing the tune and it turns out... the Levi's snippet only plays in the beginning, after which the track morphs into some pompous glam rock garbage with a whiny long-haired singer! The moment when the helium vocals slowed down to reveal the rock tune, you could almost hear the Babylon Zoo guy laughing "Ha ha, techno fans! You got punked!".

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:20 (fourteen years ago)

the single has an instrumental mix that turns that opening riff into a full tune

s'ok
